Recently I love Imogen but a friend of mine told me she thinks it's a little 'posh and dull'.

My DSis has an Imogen, also known as Immy or Mim. I think it's a lovely name.

FayCarew · 25/06/2021 10:29

Not dull. Not particularly posh but a classic as it's from Shakespeare.

Don't run baby names past anyone other than your partner unless you don't care about the negative comments - every name you come up with will get poopooed by someone!
This.

Obviously you should run it past us cos posters like me will tell you like it is. Smile

I love this name

Breadandbutterpudding85 · 25/06/2021 13:16

@Doona

It's okay but my kids all have multiple imogens in their classes at school, so I've heard the name too much in the past few years tbh. I might just live in an imogen bubble though.
I imagine your kids are likely to be over 5years old then as the name has been falling every year in the charts since 2010 when it peaked. Looking at the trajectory of the official ONS statistics the name will be well outside the top 50 by the time the official 2020 ONS statistics are released

A great name choice and sounds perfect with Reuben!

Reuben is far more popular now than Imogen (1,420 Reubens in 2019 compared to 1,000 Imogens - imogen continuing to fall, Reuben mainly rising each year up a huge upswing for the past 25 years if you look at the graphs)

Great names for siblings , lovely choices

We obviously have the same taste in names. I have an Imogen. We call her Mog as I hate Immu. (But accept that I won’t have much say in the shortening as she gets older) Reuben was my top choice for a boy but one of my closest friends got in there first.

Naimee87 · 25/06/2021 14:00

My sister is called Imogen and hates her name, always has! But it does go well with Reuben!

TatianaBis · 25/06/2021 15:28

@Naimee87 - It's a lovely name why doesn't she like it? Why hasn't she changed it?

Viviennemary · 25/06/2021 15:35

Not keen personally. Still it seems to be a very acceptable and popular name.

I like it, very sweet name. I know a few Imogen's and I like the shortening to immy as a knick name
spiderlight · 25/06/2021 16:19

I like it. I know two - one known as Immy and one as Midge.

IggyAce · 25/06/2021 16:25

I love Imogen but I’m bias as I have an opinionated, strong willed & beautiful dd with the name. She’s now a teen and was Immy as a toddler, thru primary Imogen at home and Idgy to friends she is now Imogen or Midge. It goes lovely with Reuben.

MadeOfStarStuff · 25/06/2021 19:27

No it’s not dull it’s lovely!

Dull to me is top 10 names like Olivia, but I don’t think dull is necessarily bad, it depends what you want in a name.

Does your friend prefer more out there names? Which is fine, for her kids. For your kids, it’s up to you and their other parent.

hawkehurstgang · 26/06/2021 06:45

Thank you for the replies!

Yes my friend's got very different baby name tastes to me - her favourite girl's name is Sailor - so I suppose it doesn't matter whether she likes the name as we are fairly unlikely to like the other one's chosen names!

It's lovely to see such positive feedback for it on here though, seems like MNers have more similar taste to me... Next time I'll go straight to MN ans avoid asking people irl Grin

adeleh · 26/06/2021 12:52

I would not like Sailor at all as a girl’s name. Not in the least. Yes, I can now understand why she finds Imogen dull.

Comedycook · 26/06/2021 12:56

It's always popular on these boards but I think it's awful...very unfeminine and clunky sounding.

Ju11tne · 26/06/2021 12:58

I like it. I think it's different.

HappyDaysToCome · 26/06/2021 13:04

It’s particularly lovely with a Welsh accent.

WhiteVixen · 26/06/2021 13:08

I have a nearly 2-year old Imogen, I love her name. She's also Immy (which she has just started to say).

Chilldonaldchill · 26/06/2021 13:27

I love it. (I've loved it since reading What Katy Did even though she's not a nice character in that).
I know two (both just pre-teen) and they are sassy and feisty.
I think it goes brilliantly with Reuben.

MunsterThyme · 26/06/2021 13:37

I love it. A very dignified name, suits all ages. I had it on the shortlist for DD 13 years ago!

daisypond · 26/06/2021 13:39

Imogen is fine. It’s not dull. It doesn’t go at all alongside Reuben, though.

Naimee87 · 26/06/2021 15:19

@tatianabis well she goes by imy which is quite cute and i think as we don‘t live in the UK anymore she got so used to people not being able to pronounce it properly she just ended up hating it. She‘d change it if she could but she‘d upset my mum. I hate my name too, cannot give it away on here but i don‘t have a nickname as my names to short. And again where we live they pronounce it soooo horribly. Maybe in the UK the names are pronounced far nicer than here

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/06/2021 16:11

Imogen is lovely imo - classic, feminine and elegant (Shakespearean). I suppose I could understand the "dull" opinion since it's fairly popular now but it's popularity also means I can't see how it can be called "posh" since it's used by lots of types of parents. It's fine with Reuben, although their similar ending sound may mean you'll have to consider keeping the "theme" if you have a third DC!
