Not for a child but the name my great aunt always went by though she was christened Ellen. I think she was called it to distinguish her from her mother who was also Ellen. None of us can think what Crinnie would be short for?

Where was she from? Maybe it's an abbreviation of a word common to her hometown/village/city.

If it was a nickname it might not be short for a name at all? I remember reading about a (fictional) Gloria who was known as Ally - Gloria/ Glory/ Glory Alleluia/ Ally. My Dad’s known-by name is nothing like his real name, it is taken from his brother’s inability to say his real name as a child, and then a shortening of that. Crinnie sounds like it might be similar.

Christine?

Could it just be a noise? Sometimes babies make weird noises when they start to talk, maybe she said a noise like Crinnie and then it became her nickname. Or maybe a rhyme with something else? Similar to how Miley Cyrus got her name from being a smiley-miley baby.

She was from Sheffield
