Nothing to do with the origin of the names - more to do with familiarity I think. Both Cosima and Ottilie are very unusual names

So your definition of ‘try hard’ is names that are unusual to you. What if they’re not unusual to other people?.

AdriannaP · 22/06/2021 15:29

Cosima

AquaTorfana · 22/06/2021 15:29

Cosima is far nicer.

TatianaBis · 22/06/2021 15:29

It was just random. Grace Ella Alice Olivia Eve - I know all the MN hackneyed favs.

Nope, more names that are both unusual and don't even sound that nice - but obviously that changes depending on the person - that's why we all have different opinions, which is what the OP was asking for.
Ceepeee · 22/06/2021 16:19

Cosima is nice. Ottilie sounds and looks (quite literally) OTT.

TatianaBis · 22/06/2021 16:28

@Hippohappiness

But that’s the point - what you call unusual is simply means unusual to you.

Cosima and Ottilie are not unusual in their respective countries.

PrivateParty · 22/06/2021 16:37

Never heard of either of them so not totally sure how they sound..

ItsNotLoveActually · 22/06/2021 16:51

I like Cosima - Orphan Black (TV series).

KirstenBlest · 22/06/2021 16:56

Cosima is extremely unusual in central and northern Italy. It is only used in part of the south and it's an old lady's name, but not of the cool vintage kind. It's the kind of name that was given for religious reasons or because it was the name of a grandparent. My nonna was a Cosima and hated her name, all Cosimas I know do. They usually go by a nickname such as Mina.

TatianaBis · 22/06/2021 18:08

It's very much a nonna's name in Italy - but the names Cosimo and Cosima are familiar across the country.

But in the UK it's chic not vintage.

By the same token Kevin is popular in France.

Sugarbellaella · 22/06/2021 18:20

Ottilie is super popular in some circles - I worked in quite a well to do office and it was the go to name for a girl - loads of them. Along with a million boys called Milo.

MegaCityOne · 22/06/2021 20:30

I like Cosima.

Bellasblankexpression · 22/06/2021 21:12

After seeing it spelled how it’s pronounced I like Cosima. It’s not at all common where I live!

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 22/06/2021 21:15

Love both!

QueenofDestruction · 22/06/2021 21:16

Cosima is lovely the other not so much

ClaireB29 · 22/06/2021 21:21

I don't like either. Sorry.

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 22/06/2021 21:21

I was thinking of otters (nasty little feckers)

😂 what did the otters do to you?

Lightningrain · 25/06/2021 18:17

Interesting that PP’s have said Cosima is seen as an old lady name in Italy.

I met an Italian Cosima a few years ago who would be in her late 20’s now. I wonder whether she was just named after a relative.

She pronounced it Cos-ee-ma.

BigfatJ · 25/06/2021 18:17

Neither!!

midsomermurderess · 25/06/2021 19:00

Cosima. I find Ottilie preposterously frilly. To paraphrase Malcolm Tucker (The Thick of It) it sounds as if she'd be carted around in a sedan chair.

woodfort · 25/06/2021 19:08

@Pattygonia

I think Ottolie particularly has become more popular recently (I know two born in last year), so if you were hoping for an unusual name, I wouldn’t pick that one.
Yes Ottilie and Arabella seem very of the moment names.

I don’t mind popular names at all but I feel like when people choose a name like Ottilie it’s because they want something more unusual? But it’s really not so unusual now. Obviously still not Evie or Isabella level popular but because it’s not a name that has been previously popular I think it stands out when you hear it several times.
