Aaron or Arran

We are expecting a boy in August and both like the name Aaron/Arran, but can't agree on the spelling.

We would pronounce it a-run not air on

Which spelling would you go for or neither?

Why not go for Alan instead, it's almost the same. Or should it be Allan

DramaAlpaca · 21/06/2021 22:25

I'd go for Arran as the pronunciation is obvious.

I'd instinctively pronounce Aaron AIR-on, but many people pronounce it the same as Arran.

Smallkeys · 21/06/2021 22:50

Arran as it’s more obvious but you will still get people spelling and pronouncing it the other way :-)

Smallkeys · 21/06/2021 22:52

Yes as per your comment he will be spelling it and telling people how to spell it forever :-)

Laquila · 21/06/2021 22:54

I think Aron is the most straightforward solution, although admittedly it's not what you asked! I have known Aarons pronounced as both A-ron and AIR-ron. (IME as a Jewish name it's usually pronounced more like the former, I think?)

Arun (more common in India) is also nice.

rainbowandglitter · 21/06/2021 22:55

I know someone called Arron so another spelling variation to add to your list.

User135792468 · 21/06/2021 22:56

As a teacher, if I saw it spelt Arran on a new class list in September, I would just assume it was an Asian child. I’m not sure why.

ScribblyBaller · 21/06/2021 22:58

@BackforGood

Aaron for the name

Arran for the jumper

it's Aran for the jumper
BackforGood · 22/06/2021 00:08

Really ?
I always assumed they were originally / traditionally made on the Isle of Arran, so would have the same spelling.

ScribblyBaller · 22/06/2021 01:02

They're from the Aran islands which are off the West Coast of Ireland rather than from the Scottish island of Arran.

Synchrony · 22/06/2021 06:04

Aaron. Fwiw I've never heard of the air-on pronunciation.

ILoveStickers · 22/06/2021 06:57

I agree, I've not heard the air-run pronunciation outside of old films. It may well be regional, but you'll know your region best.

Chilldonaldchill · 22/06/2021 09:28

I used to always pronounce Aaron as Air -on but in the last 16 years every one I've met has pronounced it Arron so I now use that pronunciation if I meet a new one.
But I prefer the Arran spelling just because it annoys me that Aaron is pronounced peculiarly.

BigfatJ · 22/06/2021 10:05

Aaron

cocoloco987 · 22/06/2021 10:16

For that pronunciation I'd go with Arran. I can't see why him being named after the island would be a problem given that Lewis, Iona, Skye and, arguably, Harris are all acceptable names.

What's arguable about Harris. It's a pretty standard name. OP I'm Scottish and it tends to he spelled Aaron for the name. I'd assume with Arran it was someone non Scottish getting it wrong

RuthW · 22/06/2021 12:21

Depends how you want to say them.

Aaron - Arun
Arran - a (as in apple) ran

MaMelon · 22/06/2021 12:28

I prefer Arran as I’m Scottish - and although Aaron is the most common spelling up here I still prefer the island names like Isla, Iona, Lewis, Harris etc.

BackforGood · 22/06/2021 12:38

Well, I live and learn. Smile Thank you @ScribblyBaller

JaneJeffer · 22/06/2021 14:03

Aaron

FeedMeSantiago · 22/06/2021 14:28

If you spell it Aaron he will get both pronunciations.

Arran makes it obvious you want Arun pronunciation rather than Aaron pronunciation.

The Aaron I went to primary school with was Air-on. He'd be about 34 now. When we did religious studies at school, Aaron was pronounced Air-on by all our teachers. Same at church according to DH who attended church as a child.

CiaoForNiao · 22/06/2021 14:34

Aaron.

FWIW all the Aarons I've ever met (about 3 of them Grin) pronounced it A-ron. All used the Aaron spelling.

I have mostly come across Harris as a surname rather than first name, that's all - just my own experience Smile
