Boring vs trendy name?

I'm naturally drawn to both classic names that are often tarred as being 'boring', but also more trendy names like the old lady names (Edie, Ivy, Ada etc) that I worry will date a lot.

Current classic/'boring' favourite is Alice, current 'trendy' favourite is Edith nn Edie. Any thoughts on which subset of names is better, or which is better between Alice and Edith?

I'd say both of those names are classic/traditional.

Violetlavenders · 18/06/2021 20:13

Alice and Edith are equally old classics

Clickbait · 18/06/2021 20:14

Both lovely names. I'd choose Alice personally, I don't think it's boring.

Sleepyquest · 18/06/2021 20:16

Alice is boring. I know about 10 all aged 25 ish. It's done to death sorry

slippersandprosecco · 18/06/2021 20:17

I just feel like Edith and other similar names had quite a hiatus, and then a huge surge in popularity in recent years (and therefore have a higher likelihood of dating), whereas Alice etc have persisted more hence why some people view it as boring. Could be wrong though!

Of those two, Alice. Edith still sounds like an old lady.

Spied · 18/06/2021 20:18

Alice is lovely, one of my favorites.

ILoveShula · 18/06/2021 20:57

I'd go with Alice, because it is more likely to remain popular.

wanderedlonelyasacloud · 18/06/2021 20:58

Alice Smile

ILoveShula · 18/06/2021 20:58

I'm not keen on Ivy, Ada or Edie/Edith. They have become popular all of a sudden and will probably date badly.

Edie will get shortened to Ede which isn't very nice.

ILoveShula · 18/06/2021 20:59

If I had another DD, I would name her Alice.

lavenderandwisteria · 18/06/2021 21:00

Oh definitely Alice, it’s a lovely name. Edith is a tiny frail old lady with grey hair Grin

LowryLake · 18/06/2021 21:07

I think Alice is a lovely, classic name. I don't see it as boring, in the same way as I do with Charlotte, Emily, Grace, Sarah, Jane, Hannah etc. I'm not a fan of Edith. It sounds very old lady to me, whereas Ivy and Ada sound a bit fresher, though I agree they're quite trendy at the moment. Other names I view as classic, without being boring -

Phoebe
Imogen
Lucy
Violet / Viola
Beatrice / Beatrix
Josephine
Eloise

slippersandprosecco · 18/06/2021 21:13

Love Phoebe, Imogen and Beatrix (not such a fan of Beatrice), but Eloise and Lucy sound a bit wet to me

Most names date but only some date badly. I think trendy names that will date badly might be ones like Wren or Darcy, names that have only recently been used as first names. Whereas names like Ivy that are having their 5th time around will sound 'dated' but not naff. If you know what I mean.

For example, Tracy dated badly (although I know some lovely Tracys and am throwing them no shade!) whereas Louise is also dated but is still an absolutely fine name.

Posieandpip · 18/06/2021 23:36

Edith 100%!

NannyR · 18/06/2021 23:40

Edith is beautiful, as is Edie. I find Alice quite safe and boring.

CoffeeRunner · 18/06/2021 23:42

Only my opinion of course, but Alice (along with Grace) is the ultimate in "wet" names.

I love Eloise & Lucy though!

Phoebe is nice.

Imogen is ugly sounding to me. And the adult Imogen I know well (almost 50) has always hated her name & the fact it has no real alternative other than the very babyish Imi.

Really just pick the name you love the most. It might date, it might end up sounding boring, but if you love the name you will always love it & won't regret it.

Lalliella · 19/06/2021 00:32

Alice is really pretty. My friend when I was a kid had a great-aunt Edie and she used to call her Idi Amin 😬

Lalliella · 19/06/2021 00:33

Imogen and Eloise are gorgeous

PopOfNothing · 19/06/2021 00:35

I would say Phoebe and Imogen are not massively dated names, both have floated within the top 100 for about 25 years. My children were born in the 1990s and have known are few around their age over the years.

Not overly wild on Imogen (its ok) but I really like Phoebe.

SE13Mummy · 19/06/2021 01:05

Alice and Edith are both names I like and would consider to be fairly classic. Whilst Alice has been more popular since the 1980s, Edith hasn't been so well used - its usage is much more in line with something like Miriam. If I were naming a daughter any time soon, I'd choose Edith over Alice because I prefer the -ith ending to the -iss one.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/06/2021 01:11

I like Alice and Edith. I think Alice is a pretty classic.

Winwins · 19/06/2021 03:34

I think both are relatively classic.

Alice is my favourite though. It’s a perfect name.

SoapboxFox · 19/06/2021 06:07

I prefer Edith.
