How to get over the ‘name ick’?

What I mean by that is negative connections, often absolutely ridiculous, putting me off at every turn!

Alice ‘A lice’

Lyla ‘Oh, she’ll be a little liar’

Pearl ‘Omg the whale from sponge Bob, she will be huge’

Kieran ‘Where is he running too with ran in there?’

Poppy ‘Will she pop a lot of spots in her time?’

Michael ‘Will he get a lot of calls?’

Ollie ‘Oi! Oi!’

Patrick ‘Will he play tricks?’

Tracey ‘Will she be racey?’

These aren’t even specific names I’d even go for really, just examples of the silly stuff going on in my head! What’s wrong with me?! I think the pregnancy hormones are making me a bit crazy Blush

They are all ridiculous.

BikeRunSki · 19/06/2021 08:24

@CharlieAteThePies

I think it's wise to keep potential names to yourself and your OH. Everyone has an opinion, but they're probably less likely to be negative when it's attached to an actual tiny person once they've arrived.

Although my sister just announced she wants Rex as a boy's name and a friend has shortlisted Otis. I'm really trying my very best not to comment 😂

I really like both those names.

Massively over thinking btw
doadeer · 19/06/2021 08:28

Well I would think of those are the worst things other kids say to my child then it's not too bad 🤣

Tinselandlights · 19/06/2021 08:29

Op my mother in law does this and it's a sign of her massive anxiety, could the same be true of you?

We didn't share any names whatsoever with her (she hates our DD's name btw) because during my SIL's pregnancy she honestly couldn't stop herself from making these associations. It was like a compulsion for her.

Every name was 'oh I went to school with a boy who picked his nose called xxx'

TooTiredForToday · 19/06/2021 08:34

Yeah my MIL told us we couldn't use our chosen name because it was 'a paedophiles name' Shock I ignored her but it put DH off.

Pinkypink · 20/06/2021 10:51

I think it's the hormones. Almost every name can have a weird connotation. Wait till the baby arrives.
I considered 2 names for my son and the lady in the bed next to me who filmed her birth and watched it back all through the night on full volume had a son called one of the names. So that made my decision easier.
I can still hear her screams and ds is 7!

i George is a very common name nowadays, but in the past, it was associated with being fat due to the “Georgie Porgie, Pudding” rhyme

There's no mention of Georgie Porgie being fat in the rhyme, only of how he treated girls.

jessicakxx · 27/06/2021 21:01

Really laughing at the Pearl association, that's exactly how I imagine anyone named Pearl 😂😂

Lalliella · 27/06/2021 21:20

I liked the name Nadia until my friend said it would be shortened to Nad and she’d get Go Nad shouted at her at sports day 😂

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 27/06/2021 21:54

You’ve been spending too much time on these baby boards @Takingkicks I’m fairly certain I’ve seen very similar criticisms of names on almost every thread I’ve looked at!

Bonkers if you ask me, but no idea how you can get past it I’m afraid. Maybe look for positive examples of names you like? Like Alice Temperley (couldn’t think of another example) to help change your mindset?

Fistful · 29/06/2021 07:03

@Standrewsschool

I think you’re overthinking it, and I have never heard of the negative connotations you associate with the names listed. If you look hard enough, you can have a nn for all names.

Also, nn ‘fashions’ change over time. For example, George is a very common name nowadays, but in the past, it was associated with being fat due to the “Georgie Porgie, Pudding” rhyme - an association people don’t link nowadays. Also, Dick is generally not recognised as a nn for Richard either by kids .

Also, if kids want to find a nn, they will. William p

I still think of George as a porky, meaty sort of name, and am baffled at its popularity. But I don’t go around telling this to Georges or their parents, obviously.
ScotsMumOf4 · 29/06/2021 10:13

Ah this is so me! I've got my kids thinking of all the ways names could be made fun of by other kids 😂

sparklyblue81 · 29/06/2021 17:38

You remind me of my DH! I love the name Alice but he just shouts “Alice Alice Who the F is Alice!!!” every time I mention it 🙈🤣

TheVanguardSix · 29/06/2021 17:43

I’ve never been where your mind is, OP. Grin
You are really overthinking things.

Nineteenandsunnyx · 01/07/2021 19:04

The only name I’ve done that with (I think) is Annalise, used to think it was beautiful until someone said it looks like Anal lice (it doesn’t really) and now that’s all I think of when I see/hear the name. Not that anal lice are even a thing ( I hope)

strawberrydonuts · 02/07/2021 04:45

I think you're overthinking some of these, OP! Most of those have never occurred to me and really aren't funny enough to become a Thing.
