Can I get your thoughts on what you'd see if you heard/saw the boy names (as many as you want):
-Jasper
-Tristan
-Frederick
-Indigo
-Joseph
-Benedict
-Edmund/o
-Edgar
-William
-Pip (short for?)

Indigo - I would think girl on hearing it
Edmundo - I would think Spanish/South American
Edgar - Allen Poe
Pip - would wonder what it was short for

Violetlavenders · 10/06/2021 20:15

I honestly wouldn't see anything, I'd have to see the person behind the name!

Hufflepuffsunite · 10/06/2021 21:04

Jasper makes me think of a dog but that's the only association I have with any of those names. Pip is short for Philip (like in Great Expectations).

CabernetSoWhat · 10/06/2021 21:10

Jasper- tall, thin, untrustworthy man. It's the sibilance. Makes me think 'snake in the grass'
Tristan- handsome warrior
Frederick- blonde German/Dutch chap
Indigo- dark-haired, Boho girl
Joseph- portly (O sound), genial chap
Benedict- just see Cumberbatch
Edmund- Medieval boy complete with page boy hair style, tunic, tights and pointy shoes
Edmundo- 5th Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
Edgar- eggs growling
William- handsome, bookish/scholarly young man
Pip is short for Philip. Pip just makes me think of the character from Great Expectations. Philip makes me think of big, spitty lips thanks to the Philip in my class when I was 5.

You did ask Grin

Pinkywoo · 10/06/2021 21:30

Jasper - cat
Tristan -vet
Frederick - chimney sweep
Indigo - my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, now prepare to die
Joseph - Jesus' dad
Benedict - monk or Cumberbatch
Edmund/o - Narnia
Edgar - butler
William - prince
Pip (short for?) - Pippin the hobbit

Pinkywoo · 10/06/2021 21:32

That doesn't mean I don't like the names, some are nice, but those are the first things that come into my head!

Marcipex · 10/06/2021 21:43

-Jasper, school refuser, extremely indulged, rules the household

-Tristan, weedy and cries a lot
-Frederick, good humoured and sporty
-Indigo, v v v naughty and destructive
-Joseph, quiet and dreamy,
-Benedict, moody, starts fights at school, brainy though
-Edmund/o, prig
-Edgar, double prig with bells on
-William, clever, porky, head boy
-Pip, never known one, Great Expectations

Helenluvsrob · 10/06/2021 22:04

Jasper - bit if a cad with a twirly dick dastardly moustache 😂

Indigo - girl. ( Inigo for a boy I guess )

Edmundo - for kid with white uk heritage - very try hard to be “ special “

The rest are ok and I have no real preconceptions. Well except Pip / Philip. Cut kid. Lovely bloke who will do anything for anyone

Orphlids · 10/06/2021 22:15

@CabernetSoWhat 😂 I enjoyed that! 🤣

Tillygetsit · 10/06/2021 22:30

-Jasper My puppy! Handsome and a handful.
-Tristan Sad blond little boy with floppy fringe
-Frederick Good solid ruddy cheeked chap.
-Indigo Hippy probably vegan parents.
-Joseph Dd1! Gorgeous funny clever and LOUD!
-Benedict Soulful serious and shy.
-Edmund/o That weird bowl haircut they used to have
-Edgar Dippy Egg. Love Edwin though
-William Sweet and placid.
-Pip Tiny smiley cheeky boy. (Usually short for Philip)

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/06/2021 11:25

-Jasper - ok, a bit of a current trend to use previously posh nmaes
-Tristan - see Jasper
-Frederick - as above, but Freddie has been popular for a while. Don't like Fred
-Indigo - do you mean Inigo?
-Joseph - fine
-Benedict - see Jasper. Benjamin is less twatty
-Edmund/o - Edmund is ok, bu Edmond/Edmundo not
-Edgar - fine, also like Edwin
-William - a bit boring
-Pip (short for?) - short for Philip is OK, but a bit babyish maybe

daisypond · 11/06/2021 11:34

I like all those names, in the main. Generally middle class, normal names that will carry well through life.

Not keen on Indigo. It doesn’t fit with the rest of your names. It’s a bit hippyish. Do you mean Inigo? That’s a good name.

I’m less keen on Jasper.

Pip - too babyish. Fine as short for Philip

Chilldonaldchill · 11/06/2021 13:56

Jasper - I love this name but I honestly think of it as the sort of name given by ineffective middle class parents who have a "sad choices step" and who never ever think their child is to blame.
Tristan - naughty boy getting into trouble
-Frederick - Freddie I see as fun and sporty but Frederick makes me think of Frasier Crane's very stolid son
-Indigo - long haired little boy with hippy parents
-Joseph - I don't have a view of this name. I know too many, all of whom are very different
-Benedict - clever, sporty, popular
-Edmund/o - serious, smart, kind
-Edgar - clever, fun, good at drama
-William - could be anything
-Pip (short for?) - same as Edmund

Posieandpip · 11/06/2021 15:36

Jasper - a good guy. Handsome, brave, left-wing.
-Tristan - handsome but a bit of a wanker. The guy from a movie that the girl fancies before she ends up with her best friend who was the boy she was meant to be with all along. Definitely blonde.
-Frederick
-Indigo - see below comments for Pip. Moreorless the same
-Joseph - I imagine a Joseph to be handsome - dashing and healthy in an old fashioned gentlemanly way.
-Benedict - friends call him Ben, but his parents insist on Benedict, which he's embarrassed about. He's embarrassed a lot. Awkward but likeable. Mean parents.
-Edmund/o - Edmund always brings to mind a Frankenstein type man, not sure why
-Edgar - studying something, his life's work. Something odd and not interesting to others. Always in a dark room studying. Losing grips with reality but doesn't care as all he cares about is what he's studying
-William - was a skinny child but gained loads of weight as an adult while still maintaining that awkward gangly-ness. Everything about him is awkward. Smells a bit musty.
-Pip - very posh, very weak, skinny, sickly looking

Posieandpip · 11/06/2021 15:38

Forgot Frederick: cockney, goes by Fred or Freddie. Bit of a lad, likes boxing and beer. Not much luck with the ladies despite being handsome. A bit thin. Ultimately a good guy, would beat up a man in the pub who touched your bum.

Purpleavocado · 11/06/2021 15:43

-Jasper - weedy brummy 80's comedian
-Tristan - posh tw*t
-Frederick - Rod Jane and Freddy
-Indigo - deep blue
-Joseph - dreamcoat
-Benedict - eggs
-Edmund/o - blackadder
-Edgar - eggs/poe
-William - boring
-Pip (short for?) - very small person, if he's short that's awful, if he's big it's good for a giggle

Faranth · 11/06/2021 15:49

Haven't read any of the others but I'm interested to see how I compare in a minute! Grin

Jasper: mischievous, a bit naughty, in a pushes it too far sort of way.
-Tristan: Blond hair, blue eyes, a bit wet and hopeless.
-Frederick: rugby player, stocky, bit loud
-Indigo: a girl
-Joseph: studious, sensible, kind
-Benedict: cumberbatch
-Edmund/o: a blokey nickname for someone last name Edmunds - shouted in the street by drunk people.
-Edgar: little old man who lives in one room of a big country house that's slowly falling down round his ears.
-William: ordinary, average.
-Pip (short for?): a girl. Philippa. If a boy, not short for anything, parents think they're posh but they aren't really.

DragonDoor · 11/06/2021 18:32
  • Jasper: carrot. Bad hair style.
-Tristan- trident, water, man with beard -Frederick- nothing comes to mind -Indigo- paint samples -Joseph: Joseph. Chopping Boards -Benedict- Cumberbatch. Smart overcoat. -Edmund/o- Lion Witch and Wardrobe. Selfish brat. Turkish delight. -Edgar: Allan Poe. Ravens. -William- HRH Duke of Cambridge -Pip (short for?) Philip Schofield.

Regular MNetter but NC for obvious reasons, and apologies because I'm only commenting is the one name.

DS is Tristan and I love it when people are asked to comment on the name Grin My favourite previous comments were when one poster said 'imagine shouting 'Tristan' when you're walking around Lidl' and the thread where one poster said the roughest kid at school was called Tristan and he tried to set fire to the school and another poster on the same thread said she knew a 10 year old lord called Tristan.

DS does have blond hair though.

Benediction · 11/06/2021 19:07

I have a Benedict. Goes by Ben.

He is called Benedict because he was conceived immediately after I lost a baby and his name means "blessing". He was and is a blessing. He doesn't know about the miscarriage obviously.

Aww, that's the sweetest story behind someone's name

I love the name. I'm changing my name to Tristan so wanted to see people's thoughts on it 😄. I have dark brown hair but I think Tristan and go to Stardust so my imagery is brunette hair anyway. I'm not posh at all but don't think the name is until people commented on it

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/06/2021 21:52

I like Tristan too but I can't not see Peter Davison in an open top car.

MumofTristan · 12/06/2021 16:10

@generalkenobi I'm sure you will really suit Tristan Smile

Tristan from Stardust is a great representation, I only remembered recently when I rewatched it that he was called that.

Marcipex · 13/06/2021 13:51

It would be nice to see future Tristans reversing the weedy stereotype.
