Hello!

Have been really stuck for girls names... I have DD1 who is Maeve. We have Irish heritage and living in Scotland.

Baby #2 due end of July. Have settled on boys name Brodie.

I've been doing a lot of wild sea swimming and loving the big bump in the sea. Decided to look up celtic names that have 'sea associations' and came across Ula which means sea jewel....

Only problem is my dog is called Ella! Are they too similar?

LOVE Ula and it goes so well with Maeve - don't worry about the dog.

Well done you with the wild sea swimming - it sounds amazing!

Just be aware that ulla in irish means apples.

BeeKeeping · 06/06/2021 21:43

@romdowa I did not know that! I think spelling it Ula and not living in Ireland we should be okay...

Granted we won't have the dog forever but if I call for one will they both come running?!

If you don't live in Ireland then you will get away with it so.

MaMelon · 06/06/2021 21:49

Are you pronouncing it ‘Oola’ or ‘Ulla’?

BeeKeeping · 06/06/2021 22:03

@MaMelon it's Oo-la

My sister is a Ula. We’ve always pronounced it You-la though, rather than Oo-la. People tend to assume it’s short for Ursula.

MaMelon · 06/06/2021 22:10

You-la makes more sense - I like that pronunciation. I’d be a bit worried about an ‘oh la la’ nickname.

BeeKeeping · 07/06/2021 20:29

@YoureGoingToHateMe Can I ask why that pronunciation? Do you know? I've only met one Ula and it was Oo-la but maybe it's down to accent? I say it with a short ooh more like hula, without the h!

Ulla is a common name in Scandinavia, pronunciation options here.

beekeeping I don’t know why that pronunciation tbh. My mum chose it as it was her grandma’s nickname for my mum. My great grandma was Faroese and I know they have some odd pronunciations of Danish words so it could be that.

BeeKeeping · 08/06/2021 19:59

@YoureGoingToHateMe Sorry just noticed your reply! Thanks for coming back. I actually like the You-la pronunciation too.

She'll get you-la/oo-la/uh-lu on rotation I reckon.. hopefully that doesn't drive her mad. Even Maeve gets mispronounced and spelled all the time and I thought we were going really safe with a one syllable name!

I wanted Niamh for DD1 but decided against it for Nia-muh reasons

beekeeping it’s a lovely name, however you choose to pronounce it. I’m glad to hear there might be another Ula in the world soon.

What about other sea names like Undine Nerissa Nerine Nerina Cordelia Kendra Maris Marina Marissa Mira Isla Marilla
