Koa

What do we think of Koa as a name? Its the only boys name me and my partner seem to be able to agree on. (I liked more traditional 'Noah' but he didn't)
Apparently its a Hawaiian name, we have no connections to Hawaii though. His middle name would be John for my grandad and surname begins with S and ends in N.
Any other suggestions welcome, I like names that are less common at least in my area. Some of my other favourites were Silas (doesn't go with surname) Elijah (partner doesn't like) and Sage (again surname)

I like it

emptyplinth · 06/06/2021 16:56

I just hear Co-op

partyatthepalace · 06/06/2021 18:23

God no - it sounds like Koala gone wrong. Transplanting a name from such a different culture into English really doesn’t work

If you like Silas and Elijah - both of which are great - then Seth, Jonas, Rufus, Ezra, Elisha, Levi, Ethan, Evan, Elliot, Saul, Tobias, Linus, Lucas, Ciaran, Caleb, Cormac, Jonah, Kester are ideas.

Reminds me of family fizz on YouTube

Strongswans · 06/06/2021 19:36

There's a girl named Koah in the family, wasn't keen at first but I love it now and it's a name from family heritage. Nn is coco.

I think a lot of people would assume girl tbh.

Stevearnottsbeard · 06/06/2021 19:54

Think kian from weslife has a son called koa...

C0nstance · 06/06/2021 19:57

Not keen. It's a celebrity name

user1493494961 · 06/06/2021 19:58

I like Silas and Elijah, Koa is bloody awful.

Smartiepants79 · 06/06/2021 20:00

If you have no Hawaiian heritage then it’s a no from me.
Keep looking.

GreyhoundG1rl · 06/06/2021 20:03

It's awful! Seriously bad.

diddlediddle · 06/06/2021 21:14

It's a girl's name isn't it? I know a female Koa.

Even if it can be unisex it looks like a lot of girls names and it doesn't look like many boys names so I think people will get it wrong. Your son may not like that very much.

Chilldonaldchill · 06/06/2021 23:06

I'm not keen.
But Silas is awesome. I'm trying to think of a surname that wouldn't go.
Silas Simpson would be fine and Silas Solomon.
Silas Salmon is a bit trickier but still could be quite cool.

DramaAlpaca · 06/06/2021 23:09

No, not for me. We don't have the same taste in names at all.

Redruby2020 · 06/06/2021 23:11

I think this is the same name as Kian from Westlife's child. Sorry just thought I would say that because I thought of him as soon as I saw your title. I think it is a nice name. I am not sure if said child had been conceived there lol or they had a trip there or something, hence the name.

OVienna · 06/06/2021 23:13

I have a female Hawaiian friend with this name. Wasnt aware it was also used for boys.

AlohaMolly · 06/06/2021 23:14

The only Koa I know of us a girl but I don’t dislike the name at all. I think she had a family member called Bodhi, if that helps!

someonesomewhere1 · 06/06/2021 23:14

Yikes, no!

But if you and your partner like it then go for it.

BeesAnkles · 07/06/2021 09:00

I absolutely love it and it was on my list but everyone else hated it Sad

Honeycombskl · 07/06/2021 09:08

Absolutely not if you have no Hawaiin heritage.

Spied · 07/06/2021 09:12

Awful.

If you like Sage what about Gage?

Synchrony · 07/06/2021 10:44

Why not if you both love it. I hate Evelyn but everyone else seems to love it! Koa would make me think "unusual" but then it would just be his name.

TatianaBis · 07/06/2021 10:46

Def no particularly with no connections to Hawaii.

Like Elijah.

toastofthetown · 07/06/2021 13:27

I wouldn’t call my child a Hawaiian name with no connections to Hawaii. I know the cultural appropriation debate is fraught, and everyone has different opinions on it, but with baby names the person who has to wear that, live with it and have it be the first anyone knows about them is the child. In cultures like Hawaii where their culture has been oppressed in recent history, taking a name just because it sounds nice seems insensitive.

bobisbored · 07/06/2021 13:29

I know of a girl called Koa. I'm not keen for either sex though.

Gem176 · 07/06/2021 17:58

I've known a Koa all my life and, if it makes any difference, he's a lovely person. Personally I think it's a great name but not one I would be able to use.

If you both like it, use it. Doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks 😊
