Orla or Reina?

These are my 2 favourite girls names I’ve managed to whittle down, I’m just curious which you prefer out of the two?
If you don’t like either, that’s fine :)

I like Orla (I know it’s not the traditional Irish spelling) as I like how it sounds, I think it sounds pretty and works well for a baby/child and an adult. I don’t personally know anyone with that name either

I like Reina because it’s more unique and means Queen in Spanish apparently. Also like the idea of Rae as a nickname

Reina

MaMelon · 04/06/2021 21:36

Love Orla Smile Reina is a bit meh.

Zarene · 04/06/2021 21:37

Reina. I've not heard it before but it's lovely.

I don't like the long Orrrrrrr sound of Orla.

JustCallMeJulia · 04/06/2021 21:38

Orla

Captainj1 · 04/06/2021 21:38

Reina was the Spanish national goalkeeper and played at Liverpool for a number of years and was a fans’ favourite. So as a Liverpool fan I’d say yes go for it and buy the gloves early on.

RosieCockle · 04/06/2021 21:41

Please don't do Orla. Kids will change it to oral.

partyatthepalace · 04/06/2021 21:42

Orla. Lots of Irish Orlas spell it like this.

Reina sounds like a disappointed and depressed 55 year old barmaid.

ColaOlaLa · 04/06/2021 21:43

Don’t line Reina at all

Orla is nice but will be changed to oral so I wouldn’t use it personally

Ikeameatballs · 04/06/2021 21:44

Orla, I really like it.

There are lots of kids called Orla. Don’t be daft.
Elouera · 04/06/2021 21:47

I know a Rayna, pronouned Ray-Na. Is that how you pronouce Reina? Or is it Ree-Na?

I don't even know how Orla is spelt in Irish? I like it, but would worry about the oral link.

MaryBoBary · 04/06/2021 21:48

I like Orla but only know one spelt Orlagh which might solve the anal problem!

MaryBoBary · 04/06/2021 21:48

Actually I don't really see how anal comes in to it. I wouldn't worry about it.

MindyStClaire · 04/06/2021 21:50

I like Orla (and nothing wrong with that spelling), but I don't like the way some English accents pronounce it Aw-la or Or-ler so I'd be aware of that.

RosieCockle · 04/06/2021 21:53

@partyatthepalace not sure of your logic. Just cos there of loads of them, no one will take the piss? Ok right. Crack on. That's why loads of kids are called Dick these days.

6heartsforhumphrey · 04/06/2021 21:54

I would beg to differ, nothing at all like the one I know..Wink

LizzieAnt · 04/06/2021 22:09

Órla is the modern Irish spelling of the name OP, so the only difference is you're not using the fada on the letter o. Strictly speaking Orla without the fada should be pronounced differently, but lots of Irish people do leave it out and just pronounce the name as if it were there. The same happens with names like Seán/Sean or Dónal/Donal. Órlaith is an older version of the name that's still used - it's not a more correct version.
I prefer Orla to Reina, but it often seems to be pronounced incorrectly, unfortunately.

Germolenequeen · 04/06/2021 22:24

I know a lovely Orla - nice name 😍

Themeparklover · 05/06/2021 00:00

orla

VikingsFan · 06/06/2021 10:34

Reina

DancesWithDaffodils · 06/06/2021 10:41

Orla (although Aw and or are pronounced the same round here, so I cant hear a difference between those two, unlike a PP. Might be worth thinking about if you are fixed on a pronunciation).

How would you pronounce Reina? I'm guessing Ray-na given the Rae nickname?

AfterSchoolWorry · 06/06/2021 10:43

Reina.

Orla is all vowels and one weak constant. Nothingy.

AfterSchoolWorry · 06/06/2021 10:44

  • constanant.
LizzieAnt · 06/06/2021 13:38

Orla should have a strong r sound too though, AfterSchoolWorry. It just doesn't seem to work so well when said with a non-rhotic accent.

Numnumcookie · 06/06/2021 17:49

Reina
It is also a Japanese name meaning wise. I know someone called Reina and she's lovely (and clever) so I have positive associations with that name.
