Stupid disagreement with DH

So DH and I are having an utterly stupid disagreement about whether Ophelia or Cecilia is the posher name.
We have no plans to use either and this has literally come about as we were on our morning walk a few days ago and overheard a couple trying to decide between the two names, I assume for one of their children but who knows, maybe a pet or something.
The point is, this is so ridiculous. But anyway, which do you think is ‘posher’?

Claudia is not posh. It's a very common name in Germany.

Ophelia is posher than Cecilia.
Celia is not posh but a good option maybe?

villainousbroodmare · 04/06/2021 19:56

Cecily is much posher than Cecelia. Cressida is posher than either.

villainousbroodmare · 04/06/2021 19:57

Cecilia! damn autocorrect!

Serpenta · 04/06/2021 20:02

I would say Cecilia is the posher of the two. It's a reserved and disapproving name.

Ophelia is far too ostentatious for our chin-free, thin lipped ruling classes. It's a trap of a name, aimed to out those who have ideas above their station in life.

Serpenta · 04/06/2021 20:07

In the UK Claudia is name given to characters in fiction and TV dramas to imply they're posh and a bit racy. Plummy accent and a red sports car.

NamiSwan · 04/06/2021 20:13

Ophelia is 100000% posher than Cecilia

partyatthepalace · 04/06/2021 20:46

A draw.

Play nice now

Bibidy · 04/06/2021 21:43

@PattyPan

Ophelia for sure. Cecilia makes me think of the Simon & Garfunkel song whereas Ophelia is pure Shakespeare. Much posher connotation.
Snap.
MaryBoBary · 04/06/2021 21:50

I'd say Ophelia is posher.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/06/2021 21:57

Interesting one OP. Ten+ years ago i'd have said Ophelia, as it's a name almost no-one used. Now though, more popular, like a nouveau-Olivia.

To me there's a big difference between Celia (normal, Simon and Garfunkel song reference etc) and Cecilia (much posher / more Catholic, saint reference).

Cecilia is up there with Cicely and Araminta as really quite posh. At this moment, more so than Ophelia.

Claudia is a bit like Celia. Nice, normal, can be a bit posher than Celia but nowhere near as posh as Cecilia.

Violetlavenders · 04/06/2021 22:01

Isn't a person rather than a name 'posh'?

CeibaTree · 04/06/2021 22:02

I think Ophelia used to be posher but it's surged in popularity lately and is being used by not particularly posh people now. Claudia is a nice solid middle class name.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/06/2021 22:03

Ophelia is a bit like Delilah and Tallulah, isn't it. Showy, tragic temptress. (With Ophelia, it's the 'I'll feel your.. that's the sexual reference, rather than a temptress story).

Bibidy · 04/06/2021 22:11

I feel like Cecilia is quite an old fashioned, classic 'normal' name, whereas Ophelia, while beautiful, is overtly Shakesperian and could come across a bit of a pretentious choice.

EL8888 · 04/06/2021 22:12

Ophelia is posher but they’re both quite dreadful

MyPanda · 04/06/2021 22:18

My boss has a daughter named Cecelia. He is very not posh 😂 He does send her to private school though so maybe he has pretensions that way..

MyPanda · 04/06/2021 22:20

Then again every third poster on MN wants to name their child Ophelia so who knows

HeronLanyon · 04/06/2021 22:24

Very annoyingly I think they are about level in terms of poshness. Cecilia is perhaps marginally more used. Ophelia
Actually as I was typing I think Ophelia is slightly posher in that I’d be more surprised by a non posh Ophelia than a non posh cecilia.

HeronLanyon · 04/06/2021 22:26

Cecilia was the name I was very nearly given by my parents (60s). I got a better one !

TatianaBis · 04/06/2021 22:47

Neither. Both solid middle class names.

Newestname001 · 05/06/2021 03:35

@PattyPan

Ophelia for sure. Cecilia makes me think of the Simon & Garfunkel song whereas Ophelia is pure Shakespeare. Much posher connotation.
Thank you! The Simon & Garfunkel song instantly came to mind for "Cecilia" but I couldn't place it - it's very late 😴

Also agree Ophelia is posher - and for the same reason. 🌹

woodfort · 05/06/2021 07:22

Ophelia has become quite popular and not that posh now. I probably would have said posh 5+ years a go but not now.
One of the Radford babies is Ophelia!

Cecilia hasn’t become faddy.

TatianaBis · 05/06/2021 09:05

I think you need to define posh OP.

Violetlavenders · 05/06/2021 10:13

I too would like to know what exactly people mean with 'posh' Confused

icecream2929 · 05/06/2021 10:42

I suppose I mean that if I heard of a child named Araminta or Montgomery, I’d just assume them to be from posh or well to do families. That’s all really! It really isn’t a serious question at all, DH and I were just discussing the topic and were interested in other opinions!
