Fay or Rowan /New Age Names?

Greendaisydays · 02/06/2021 12:48

Fay and Rowan are top of my sister’s list. They are very new age and in to Wicca etc

Not sure what I think about either but then I knew a Fay at school and this sounds awful but I always associate it with chav city.

What other new age names are there. There was talk of using Fae I like the spelling but as it has a very specific meaning I feel wouldn’t be suitable something my sister is considering (though i will go with whatever she decides obviously without judgement).

When I think of 'new age' names, I think of natural things (Wren, Alder, Chryssanti), particular virtues (Harmony, Zeal, Reverie, Valor/Valora), and lesser used polytheistic names (Ceres, Gráinne), but the new age witchy/Wicca people I know have used all sorts.

I know a young Faye whose parents are most definitely not new age (Fay, Fae, and Faye all mean fairy derived from fata/Fates) and a few young Rowans from families of all types.

I love Rowan - more so for a girl. Faye is pretty and I prefer that spelling. Also like -

Sabrina
Hazel
Fern
Wren
Robin
Morgan

Maybe Seren? Or Wren

I love Fay and Faye - so underused and I love it's meaning. Rowan a bit dull and overdone in 2021.

You've got two names here which are very different in terms of popularity. Faye (with an E) is outside the official Office National Statistics (ONS) top 300 names and the numbers are falling every year so the name will leave the top 400 soon. Fay without an E is outside the top 2,000 names. Very underused

Rowan on the other hand is booming up the ONS top 100 and to be honest I find it quite overused now. RoMan with an M is the fastest rising boy name, about to enter the top 50 (already top 30 in Scotland!), so there's a lot of RoMan and RoWans about past few years, whereas there used to be none- I think that means name will date.

I think Faye is better. The e softens is somehow.

daisypond · 02/06/2021 16:35

I don’t think either of those is at all new age. They’re both nice, traditional names.

thelittlestrhino · 02/06/2021 16:36

Faye (not met a Fay) and Rowan are both lovely Smile I have taught girls of both names and have zero negative connotations for either

Whatsyourflava · 02/06/2021 16:54

Love the name Faye or Fay. Very different yet familiar.
Rowan I'm a bit bored of now as it's getting very popular (already top one hundred and still rising) and lots of similar-sounding names are increasingly popular too at the moment. Too trendy.

zingally · 02/06/2021 17:00

I don't think of either of those as "new age" names...

I went to school with a Faye, but don't know any others.

I'm a primary school teacher, but haven't personally met any little Rowan's. But maybe they haven't come through yet? I did go to school with a male Rowan.

Erictheavocado · 02/06/2021 17:21

I can't say either of them strike me as 'new age' at all. I know a few Fay/Fayes , most around my age (I'm in my late 50's), though I do know a couple who would be late teens now. Rowan, whilst I like it as a name, always conjures up Rowan Atkinson for me.

Rainbow321 · 02/06/2021 17:24

Love Faye , Fern and Wren .

CherryonBiscuit · 02/06/2021 17:24

Fay is nice
Rowan a bit overdone and will get shortened to Row.
Also too similar to the name Roman which is everywhere last year or so.

TatianaBis · 02/06/2021 17:44

Fay is just really 80s to me. Doesn’t say new age.

If I were into woo I’d go much more creative -

Ostara - goddess of spring
Astraea
Guinevere
Yseult
Kali
Mirabai
Maedbh

partyatthepalace · 03/06/2021 00:02

Like Rowan a lot
Fay/e is quite wet (Fae is appalling)

Olwen, Thora, Freya, Diana, Athena, Sabrina, Olwen, Elowen, Ffion, Iris, Bay, Robin, Laurel, Seren, Serena, Fern, Astra, Stella, Aster, Rowena, Ivy, May

ErrolTheDragon · 03/06/2021 00:19

** I dunno about Rowan being 'new age', it makes me think of the former Archbishop of Canterbury.

kezziethecat · 03/06/2021 06:51

Rowan was on my list and I would use it now if I had a surprise baby and I am definitely not new age. Really like Fay too.

OhTheTastyNuts · 03/06/2021 07:37

Celeste

Phyllis321 · 03/06/2021 07:48

littleredberries · 03/06/2021 07:55
