Hello

Very quick one. Ruairí: acceptable or not without the fada?

There seem to be a few public figures who don’t use it and I wonder if it’s becoming or may become like Rónán or similar, where it is used both with and without?

Thanks!

Hopeful bump...

I'm not sure if it's a recognised letter in the UK. I'm in France and they don't accept that letter. I don't know either way though. Maybe just use it informally to avoid any issues when travelling etc...

DD and DN have names with fadas and they both use them in the UK. Some forms cannot recognise them but all the official ones we've come across do. It's never caused them problems with travelling. They both

Posted too soon... they both love their names with them.

That’s very helpful, thank you. Have they faced any snobbery about dropping the fada at all?

I don’t want to make life difficult for a child but I also don’t want to miss off the fada if it changed the name fundamentally to be incorrect. I don’t live in Ireland at the moment.

DD has had no problems either with or without. She gets a bit annoyed when she can't enter it into forms. We lived in Ireland, it was a bit easier there. I don't think there would have been any problems either with it or without.

Rhuaridh is how it is spelt when I have seen it (Scotland). Possibly another option.

MadMadMadamMim · 01/06/2021 22:01

We've a Scottish relative, Ruairidh.

Rhymes with Fury, rather than Story.

Ofpalestsilver · 01/06/2021 22:59

My nephew is called Ruairi technically with a fada but he has literally never used it!

DramaAlpaca · 01/06/2021 23:02

I'm in Ireland. I think it's one of those names where it's acceptable not to use the fada. With the 'i' at the end of the name it doesn't change the sound much, if at all.
