How would you pronounce Ffion?

So, the name Ffion is really growing on me. However, we live in England and I'm wondering how easy it will be for people to pronounce and whether it's a name they'll be familiar with. It's a Welsh name, meaning 'foxglove'. Thanks.

My DS has a classmate called Ffion. I've never hear any of the kids/ parents/teachers having issues pronouncing it. Feeyon.

I really like it and Ffion is my sons class is a lovely smiley girl. I think she suits her name.

Fee-on (on as in the word on, not 'un').

I'm English but my maternal family are native Welsh speakers and that's how my relative Ffion pronounces her name.

So my daughters middle name is Ffion (we live in wales). Non of our English family have any issue saying it tbh. Now my sons middle name is Llion and that one gets interesting pronunciations haha. As welsh names go ffion is easy to say and I think most people can work it out. It is a lovely name.

In the nicest possible way I think you are over-thinking this Grin

dementedpixie · 29/05/2021 09:28

Fee-on without the 'y' sound

CoffeeCakey · 29/05/2021 10:16

Fee-on

CakesOfVersailles · 29/05/2021 11:17

I immediately though fee-yon but then second guessed myself thinking it might be fie-yon.

StrongerOrWeaker · 29/05/2021 11:19

Well, defo don't pick it if you are going to live in a French-speaking country!

DotsandCo · 29/05/2021 11:20

My granddaughter is Ffion...my son in law is Welsh. It's a beautiful name 🥰

Pronounced Fee-yon.

ILoveShula · 29/05/2021 14:34

Fee-on

Ff is a letter in it's own right. As a pp said, you do not elongate the Ff sound. Dropping one f isn't an option as it doesn't have an f in it.

Fion would be mixed up with the boy's name Fionn.

Yeah - it's spelt differently and sounds quite different in a French accent, so not something I'm going to worry about 😊

Don't drop an F like a pp suggested. I think that would encourage Fye-on and there is no need to bloody anglicise it Hmm

ILoveShula · 29/05/2021 15:18

Have you considered Ffibi? Or Feebee? Grin

Souther · 29/05/2021 15:21

Fee-on

ZeroFuchsGiven · 29/05/2021 15:29

@Hohofortherobbers

I've been saying it wrong, fiff-fion. Good job I've never known one irl
I've never seen this name but honestly thought it might be pronounced Vivien 😅

But Ffion is actually a name and not a misspelling of another name. Or is this a reference to something that I’ve missed?
Disfordarkchocolate · 29/05/2021 15:36

Fe on. Its a lovely name.

KatherineJaneway · 29/05/2021 15:47

PattyPan · 29/05/2021 17:13

Fee-on. I’m English but knew about the f/ff distinction in Welsh because of the name of a friend’s village.

@ILoveShula Do you think it’s usually spelt Pheon?! Grin It’s not. Ffion is the traditional spelling.
Sgtmajormummy · 29/05/2021 17:45

I’d immediately go for the Irish pronunciation of Fionn /fyunn/ .
But I did insult a Scottish Ossian the other day by calling him /usheen/.
The mythological figure is the same.
He made such a fuss, when I thought I was acknowledging the cultural reference, that I felt like giving him a Pirates of the Caribbean: “Same story, different vaaaarshion!” Grin

GAW19 · 29/05/2021 17:48

My cousin's ex was welsh and his name was Ffion, pronounced Kiv-On

IVflytrap · 29/05/2021 18:05

Kiv-On?? I assume that's a typo!

I would definitely say Feeyon. There was a character in a Black Mirror episode with that name, which is where I think I first heard it.

If I saw it spelt with only one F, I might think it was a version of the Irish boy's name Fionn, which is pronounced differently, iirc.
