Hello I really need help with girls names. I like so many but our surname (Flanagan) is awkward and I find it difficult to match up nicely.
Names I like:

Delilah
Alice
Darcie
Eleanor
Alexandra
Verity
Imogen
Clementine
Charlotte (nn Lottie)
Penelope
Zara
Eliza
Grace
Matilda

Would love feedback on my list and further suggestions 😊

For me I would pick a first name of 1-2 syllables only as it scans better with your last name. Just my opinion though!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/05/2021 16:18

Delilah Flanagan. Too L heavy
Alice. Too A and L heavy
Darcie Flanagan √
Eleanor Flanagan. Don't like Eleanor, but paired with Flanagan its sounds good.
Alexandra. Opposite to Eleanor. I love the name, but not with Flanagan.
I'm getting all tongue tied saying it in my head.
Verify Flanagan √
Imogen Flanagan. Too harsh
Clementine Flanagan. Don't like the sound
Charlotte Lottie. See Eleanor
Penelope I'm saying Plenope Flalagan in my head so No
Zara Flanagan. Love this
ELiza Flanagan √
Grace Flanagan . it's okay. I prefer it as a middle name, though.
Zara Grace Flanagan is gorgeous.
Matilda Flanagan. Its okay.

Other ideas.
Lucy Flanagan
Daisy Flanagan
Emily Flanagan
Jessica Flanagan
Rachel Flanagan
Molly Flanagan
Amelia Flanagan
Poppy Flanagan
Rebecca Flanagan
Naomi Flanagan
Laila Flanagan
Zoe Flanagan

S00tired · 28/05/2021 17:04

Thanks for the great feedback and suggestions, very helpful.

I do really like Molly and Lucy!

Also like:

Mabel
Madeline (maddie)
Edith (Edie)
Beatrice (Bea)
Georgina (georgie)
Katherine (Kitty)
Elizabeth (Ellie)
Isabel (Issy)

We would use a short nn due to the clunky surname, with full name on birth certificate for formal use/future choice. From my original list we would probably use

Delilah (Lilah)
Eleanor (Ellie)
Alexandra (Lexi)
Imogen (Immy)
Clementine (Clemmie)
Penelope (Penny/Nell)
Eliza (Ellie)
Matilda (Tilly)

I love Delilah Flanagan, sounds straight out of a novel to me. Have you thought of shorter names like Orla, Ivy or Cora?

Synchrony · 28/05/2021 17:52

I think names ending in an ee sound work well. So I like Verity, Darcie, Lucy, Daisy, Molly, Zoe etc. I also agree that shorter names sound better.

Glitterazzi · 28/05/2021 18:11

Alana Flanagan sounds good?

violetmonster · 28/05/2021 18:15

I love Zara Flanagan!

StevieNix · 28/05/2021 18:16

Lucy or Charlotte sound great with your surname!

MerryChristmasToYou · 28/05/2021 18:17

Delilah - dislike
Alice - like, ok with surname
Darcie - dislike
Eleanor - fine, goes ok with the surname
Alexandra - fine, goes ok with the surname, but will be Alex
Verity - fine, goes ok with the surname
Imogen - ok
Clementine - dislike.
Charlotte (nn Lottie) - fine, goes ok with the surname
Penelope - fine, goes ok with the surname, but will be Penny
Zara - fine, goes ok with the surname
Eliza - not keen, goes ok with the surname
Grace - fine, goes ok with the surname
Matilda - overused, goes ok with the surname

Not my favourite name on the list but Grace goes best with the surname

I once knew a nina Flanagan which is lovely, also love Isabel but I'm biased as I have a 12yr old Izzy!

Camandmitch · 28/05/2021 19:00

Faye Flanagan

riromay · 28/05/2021 19:16

Zara sounds so good with the last name !

FirstTimer2021 · 28/05/2021 20:22

I like Delilah best from your list

sarah13xx · 28/05/2021 20:23

Zara is lovely

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 28/05/2021 21:54

Because your surname is longish and quite lyrical sounding with the repeated "n", I'd possibly avoid names with strong lyrical sounds too (like Delilah) or "n" sounds (Alexandra, Imogen, Madeline, Katherine, Penelope, Clementine, Georgina) - and likely go for shorter or more "classic" sounding first names.

I'm not keen on Darcie, Mabel, Edith or Eliza as they feel trendy imo, although they sound fine with your surname. These listed below work well to me - my personal fave is Isabel, but all are nice.

Alice
Eleanor - somehow works despite the "n" to me?
Verity
Charlotte
Zara
Grace
Beatrice
Matilda
Elizabeth - somehow works despite the length as so classic
Isabel

Something short and simple like Rose/Rosa, Eve/Eva, Emma, Laura, Cora, Sophie, Sylvie, May or Tess would sound good too imo.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/05/2021 22:00

I don't think

Delilah
Imogen
Clementine
Penelope

Go with your surname. I have a "proper name, and then a nickname" nearly everyone I know calls me my nickname, but anything more formal like school, work, college etc they use my proper name as that's whats on my birth certificate and ID, so a full name gets used quite a lot.

I like Penny though. That could be a full name.

Homeontherangeuk · 28/05/2021 22:32

Nora Flanagan?

Tillygetsit · 28/05/2021 22:47

I love Molly Flanagan. Zara is a close second. I dislike the names ending in N as it sounds clunky.

xprincessxjanetx · 28/05/2021 23:07

Delilah - Beautiful name but be prepared some people may be judgey mcjudgepants for the bible reference as Delilah wasn't a nice person.

Alice - Lovely and classic timeless name. Some may say it is 'boring' but I disagree. I feel it goes really well with your surname too.

Darcie - Old fashioned name that's making a comeback but not too popular. I adore this name and would use it myself but DH doesn't like it.

Eleanor - Good strong name with plenty of nickname opportunities but it's a bit 'meh' to me and feel your other names are better.

Alexandra - Again has good nickname opportunities and does flow well with your surname but feel it's a bit flat compared to others on your list.

Verity - I'm afraid I don't like this name at all.

Imogen - I like this name but not mad on it iykwim. It doesn't flow so well with your surname as it both ends in an 'n' sound.

Clementine - Lovely name but feel it's a mouthful with your surname.

Charlotte (nn Lottie) - Gorgeous, absolutely beautiful.

Penelope - Beautiful name, really like it with your surname.

Zara - It's an ok name but a bit dated and doesn't flow as well as some of your others.

Eliza - Not keen on this i'm afraid.

Grace - Love this, flows well and so classic and elegant.

Matilda - I like it but can only think of the roald dahl book and the film that followed whenever I hear it but if that doesn't bother you then go for it!

IslandLulu · 28/05/2021 23:13

Delilah - why, why, why?
Alice - lovely
Darcie - a bit tacky

Eleanor - lovely

Alexandra - beautiful
Verity - no
Imogen - lovely
Clementine - nice
Charlotte - my favourite from yr list
Penelope - beautiful
Zara - lovely
Eliza - lovely
Grace -.lovely
Matilda - lovely
Mabel - nice
Madeline - v nice
Edith (Edie) - beautiful
Beatrice (Bea) - beautiful
Georgina (georgie) - lovely
Katherine (Kitty) - beautiful
Elizabeth (Ellie) - beautiful
Isabel (Issy) - lovely

partyatthepalace · 29/05/2021 02:06

Delilah Flanagan is an excellent name, don’t think you need to shorten in purpose
Alice - classic but way overused
Darcie - downmarket
Eleanor - a classic
Alexandra - will get shortened but nice
Verity - yup nice
Imogen - don’t think the double n ending works
Clementine - same tho not as bad
Charlotte (nn Lottie) - classic but overused
Penelope - nice but Penny is awful
Zara - fine
Eliza - nice
Grace /ok
Matilda - nice

I’d go for Delilah

DeedledeDee · 29/05/2021 02:14

Lily
Hazel
Holly
Poppy
Ellie
Chloe

partyatthepalace · 29/05/2021 02:15

Mabel - yup nice
Madeline (maddie) - double n doesn’t work
Edith (Edie) - ok
Beatrice (Bea) - goes well
Georgina (georgie) - ok
Katherine (Kitty) - bit too Rosie O’Grady
Elizabeth (Ellie) - nn Eliza is nicer
Isabel (Issy) - nice but too many of them

I you did for for Alexandra I wouldn’t shorten it to Lexi, tis v downmarket
Eleanor shortened to Nell would go well

Adela, Violet, Pearl, Louisa all might work - but I’d still go for Delilah!

S00tired · 30/05/2021 15:45

Thank you for all the feedback ladies! I agree a short name definitely works best, although I do really love Delilah at the minute. I'd be gutted to take it off my list.

I also want a name that goes well with my other children:
James
Oliver
Theodore

So plain/classic/traditional names work best I think.
