Nickname Artie (Arthur) is this bad idea (farty artie!)

Hi all

First baby boy due September, think we have decided on Arthur with nickname Artie, BUT will that become Artie farty?!

Not sure if we’re overthinking things massively!
Really struggling to find a name we both like Grin

Arthur is ok but Artie is awful.

partyatthepalace · 26/05/2021 20:07

I think it’s fine, Arthur is lovely but there are a lot of them. He can be Art when he’s older.

I think you are over thinking, but you could always revert to Arthur if it came to it? Albert nn Albie or Arnold nn Arnie are alternatives.

Violetlavenders · 26/05/2021 20:08

Artie is awful

I like Arthur and I also like artie as a nickname. I don’t think I’d be worried about artie farty. Kids will make up nicknames regardless of what you call your child, sometimes they’ll be fine, other times they’ll be annoying, but it’s luck of the draw.

I never used to like Arthur but it has really grown on me and I actually really like it now. I have considered it for when we get pregnant with next baby but personally I would just call him Arthur. It is so much nicer sounding than Artie.

MorriseysGladioli · 28/05/2021 23:24

Carrie Artie is what comes to my mind.
I am childish, though.

MorriseysGladioli · 28/05/2021 23:24

Fartie!

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 28/05/2021 23:29

Without outing myself, I have both a surname and a first name which rhyme with a body part or bodily-function related word. When people realised it was funny for about a week and then no one ever mentioned it again. I was right slap bang in the middle of all the social groups, friends with everyone from the ‘geeks’ to the in-crowd and it certainly didn’t do me any harm having my name. I think you are over thinking this.

FWIW, you have zero control over nicknames in any case and I don’t actually think Arthur is a name which will naturally be shortened. I have two DDs with three syllable names and various possible shortenings - no one ever uses them! It’s not inevitable.

SoapboxFox · 29/05/2021 00:42

Do you like anything similar but without that association?

Albert - Bertie
Martin - Marty
Alfred - Alfie
Archer - Archie
Rafferty/Raphael - Rafi

Topseyt · 29/05/2021 02:08

I like Arthur, and would stick to that rather than introducing Artie.

Artie could well become Artie Farty, Farty Artie or just Farty.

I think Art is a possible shortening, oddly. After all, I'm not aware that Art Garfunkel was ever known as Fart. Unless I am wrong.

DalPalak · 29/05/2021 04:17

Farty Artie has a great ring to it, and babies are very flatulent. I would think you and your husband are the most likely to call him that! (Out of love and not malice, of course.)

I wouldn't worry about other kids. He can go by Art or Arthur if he is bullied but I think it's unlikely. And I don't think being called fartie would cause more than momentary embarrassment.

Arthur is a wonderful, strong name -- don't be put off it.

Doona · 29/05/2021 04:29

Like PP said, since when did parents control nicknames?

Violetlavenders · 29/05/2021 08:24

we have decided on Arthur with nickname Artie

Why have you 'decided' to call him Artie when you're naming him Arthur? They sound very different and unrelated. Arthur is two syllables and so easy to say.
