What do people think of name Anastasia ?
And does anyone have any similiar suggestions for girls? :)

Pretty and exotic sounding name - I like it with nn Anya (and I think with 4/5 syllables you will need to pick a nn!). Natalia and Alexandria have a similar feel to me, and possibly Gabriella, Antonia and Aurelia.

Cardboardeaux · 25/05/2021 21:58

Beautiful name, but it may well get shortened to Stacy (which obv isn't a problem if you like that as a nn!)

SoapboxFox · 25/05/2021 21:59

I really like it.

GlitterBicuits · 25/05/2021 22:02

50 Shades of Grey.
It would have been ok before the crap book.
Now...I'd wonder why you chose it.

DoyouthinkIcare · 25/05/2021 22:02

I love it but the usual shortened form (in Russia) is Nastia. Not sure how well that would work in UK.

MySocalledLoaf · 25/05/2021 22:06

I love it. Reminds me of Anastasia Krupnik and Stasia in Joseph Roth’s Hotel Savoy.

It blows my mind that this name could be considered tacky. Each to their own but the connotations I have are exotic and the Russian royal family, so completely opposite to the idea of it being tacky.

ElmtreeMama · 26/05/2021 11:25

Thanks @Stockholmvillage!!

And everyone really, the only thing that makes me question it is 50 shades which I didn't realise about. But think it's definitely still a contender

50 shades will be long forgotten by the time your Anastasia is growing up. Smile

Stockholmvillage · 26/05/2021 17:27

Nah fifty shades was a thing 7 or so years ago and no one remembers it.

BettyUnderswoob · 28/05/2021 09:49

I think it’s lovely. Sounds classy, and with lots of scope for diminutives.

As for being a murder victim, so were her parents Nicholas and Alexandra, and siblings Olga, Maria, Alexei and there have been plenty of people with those names since then!

user1493494961 · 28/05/2021 21:17

I like the look of Anastasia and I imagine someone classy and elegant but if it's shortened to Stacey then that's the complete opposite.

xprincessxjanetx · 28/05/2021 23:11

I think it's a pretty name

MsTSwift · 29/05/2021 07:18

It’s abit frilly for me but can be shortened. Also has sad associations with girls being shot but I like Russian history

Imcrc · 30/05/2021 07:04

Anastasia is one of my all time favourite names! So beautiful.
You could call her Anya for a nn! Dreamy!

mathanxiety · 30/05/2021 07:30

Gorgeous name.

It's Greek as well as Russian, and it was used quite a bit in Ireland several generations ago in different forms (Ansty, Anstice, Anastatia, Statia).

Welliesandpyjamas · 30/05/2021 07:33

@DotDotDotDotDot

I love this name, it was my fantasy name that I wished my parents had given me when I was about 10 years old - I think she was a character from a book I read! I always thought it was the Ana-stay-Zia pronunciation but I prefer Ana-sta-see-ya pronunciation now, which I hear more often from my Colleagues (Romanian/Bulgarian).
Me too!! I wonder what the book was.
daisypond · 30/05/2021 07:43

I know a couple of Russians. Pronounced Ana sta SEE ya. It’s shortened to Nastia. Which doesn’t work so well in English.

ufucoffee · 30/05/2021 07:46

Beautiful name. Can be shortened as well. Go for it.

TuvoknotSpock · 30/05/2021 20:43

Yes I was going to say about the abbreviation. I quite like nastia but know one so if it doesn't sound odd. Stacey Wa a actually in my list for DD (I don't care if people would judge 🤣). Anastasia is v pretty

mathanxiety · 30/05/2021 20:57

Anastasia is also shortened to Asya in Russia. Long first A sound.

lakesummer · 30/05/2021 21:08

Ana-sta-see-ya is the way I would pronounce it but there are a good few ways it could be pronounced.

I might expect some heritage to go with name but I wouldn't let a lack of that stop you if you love the name.
