If we have a boy my partner wants to name him after his grandfather which means Terry or Terence.

I'm really not keen, but it would mean so much to him and the more I hear it the more I get used to it, but the people I have spoken with are horrified!

Is it as bad as I and my friends think? Do I need to just hope it's a girl?

I like Terence. One of my DC was at school with a Terry.

Terence has a nice enough sound but is one of those Kenneth, Ronald, Graham type names that seem quite dated at the moment. However I much prefer the full name to Terry (possibly because that sounds slightly feminine to me). Agree with pp - can you convince him to use it for a middle name instead? Weirdly though, I like Teresa for a girl if that matters- sounds a bit more classic imo and Tess is a cool nn.

I'm not overly keen on either name but I do think a child should have a name of her/his own and any honouring should be done as the mn.
My friend is named after her mums best friend. They fell out 20 years ago.

I prefer it to Arthur which I find so ridiculous.
There is nothing to choose between Arthur and Terry in my opinion.

I really like it. I think it would be cute on a little boy and it's a solid man name too. It's also nice to be able to say yes it's a family name, named after grandfather etc.
Also... terry wogan what's not to love?!

My first thoughts were Terence Trent D’Arby and Terry Wogan.
I think it’s one of those names that will start having a comeback because of people doing the same thing you’re thinking about, you’re just ahead of the trend.

My 40 year old friend is called Terry. He HATES it. I think a middle name is a nice nod

He’ll almost certainly be the only one in his class, which seems to be the aspiration of most people on this board.

I think Terence works as a middle name but not as a first name

I have very close relative who is terry, and my friend's dad is too. Both are late 70s So on that basis it must be due a revival.

But I have to say it was a horrible naff name back in 1940 when they were named it, and has been a naff name through every single decade since. I don;t think it has ever been popular or in style.

Use it as a middle name. Find something you both like for a first name.

I quite like it,been a long time since i met someone called Terrance. I was at primary school in the 60's/70's. Names come and go,if you like it,go for it. Always wonder if my name will make a comeback??

I know a young Terry who goes by TJ (did since before birth and it stuck). I think that's nice.
