Boy’s names

Sorry - another thread asking for help with boy’s names - which wouldn’t be necessary if we were having a girl as there are loads I like.

My top three are: Wilfred, Sidney and Stanley.

Husband isn’t particularly keen on any names so is of little use. Wilfred is my top pick, but Boris calling his baby it puts me off - not because I particularly mind, but because I don’t want other people to think that was our inspiration or to comment on it.

Does anyone have any other suggestions that we (okay, I) may like based on the ones I’ve mentioned?

I feel you. Boys names seem much harder. FWIW, do you think a lot of people will hear Wilfred and think 'boris'? Cant see it myself. And wilf is such a beautiful name.

countrypunk · 18/05/2021 16:29

How about...

Wilbur
Ned
Ted
Alfie
Albie

I dunno why boys' names are so much harder than girls'.

countrypunk · 18/05/2021 16:30

Oh, and I love Stanley and Sidney!

Melly1801 · 18/05/2021 16:49

Thank you both 😊

@catscatsallthecats I don’t know, that’s what I’m struggling with as I don’t want to use Wilfred then regret it with all of the Boris comments that we may get, but at the same time I don’t want to not use it then regret it in a few years when no one remembers what Boris’s fifth or sixth child is called. I have no idea what the others are called so it shouldn’t really matter, but it’s just lately I’ve been hearing it on the news in relation to paying for his nanny. So maybe that’s why it’s making me question it more now!

Boys names are SO much harder 😩

@countrypunk I love them both too, husband says absolutely not to Sidney so I think I’ll save that battle for the inevitable second boy we will end up having as I can just see myself never having a girl.

And with Stanley, I don’t want to use that then want to use Wilfred for the next as that will be like a Johnson family tribute. So I guess it’s either Stanley or Wilfred for this one, unless I can find something we prefer.

I like your suggestions - especially Ned - but not sure I love them enough to call my son it. I’ve got a relative called Albie so can’t use that!

How about Arthur, Frederick (Freddie), William, Douglas, Alfred, Percy.
From your top 3 I'd pick Wilfred - I doubt the Boris association will linger!

countrypunk · 18/05/2021 17:09

Haha, I didn't think of the Johnson family tribute with both Stanley and Wilfred! Few more suggestions:

Arthur
Ernest
Edgar
Theo
Bertram (Bertie!)
Franklin
Victor
Vincent

countrypunk · 18/05/2021 17:09

I know a lovely 6 year old Wilfred and a brand new Vincent.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 18/05/2021 17:14

Edmund
Sullivan
Albie
Ralph
Chester

Standrewsschool · 18/05/2021 17:28

Edwin
Richard
Willoughby
Alfred
William
Frederick

Lotsachocolateplease · 18/05/2021 18:23

Think of the nn’s
Do you like Stan/Wilf/Fred/Sid

Other suggestions
Robert - Robbie/Bert
William
Herbert -Herbie/Bertie
Samuel
Joseph
Edward/Edmund
Isaac

PetuniaPot · 18/05/2021 18:28

Douglas
Raymond
Arthur
Victor

I doubt Wilfred will be thought of in connection with Boris. I don't think of other PM's children's names that way.

LarkDescending · 18/05/2021 18:33

I really like PP’s suggestion of Edmund.

What about Laurence?

Melly1801 · 18/05/2021 20:07

Thanks again everyone!

@Hufflepuffsunite we can’t use Percy as it’s a family member’s dog’s name - but I really like it!

@countrypunk annoying as otherwise I’d probably use both 😆

@Lotsachocolateplease yes I love all of the nicknames - husband actually prefers Wilf to Wilfred but I would rather use the full name Wilfred and shorten than just name him Wilf.

@PetuniaPot yes I hope not, I guess it’s just because I’ve heard it in the news a couple of times it’s made me think about it, but he is just one of his many children isn’t he…

I remember Blair had a Euan and a Leo I think but those names aren't associated with him. If you like Wilfred I wouldn't let this put you off.

moofolk · 18/05/2021 20:34

Stanley

Flymetothestars · 18/05/2021 21:57

Wilfred is a gorgeous name. I wouldn't let the Boris connection put you off, it's a great name with loads of history. I think you'd regret not using it. Would you think a child called Nancy was in any way connected to David Cameron because it's his daughters name? Doubt it

I also adore Sidney

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/05/2021 23:01

Wilfred is great. While it does have the retro/vintage vibe, it's similarity to more classic names (William, Frederick) means that it sounds less trendy imo than Stanley and Sidney. The Boris thing wouldn't bother me - politicians kids names aren't constantly in the news (and are often forgotten once they leave office anyway - I'd have to look up the names of Cameron's for example).
