Hi, my wife is due end of the summer and we’re really struggling for a boys name, confirmed boy so need to start thinking and the only names we love are Arthur and albie which I know according to mumsnet are very popular!

One syllable surname. Smile

Ethan
Kevin
Mason
Ewan
Leo

I don't think Albie is hugely popular. I only know one who is 16 and one who is 11. Arthur does seem more popular. I think Albie seems more popular because there are so many similar names such as Alfie, Stanley, Freddie etc
If you like the old man chic vibe how about:
Frank
Herbie
Bertie
Victor
Gilbert
Sidney
Lucian
Rafe

Peter

Long over due a revival. DC2 was going to be a Peter.

DeliaOwens · 14/05/2021 15:46

William
Thomas
Alfred
Ernest

ChocOrange1 · 14/05/2021 15:48

I don't know anyone called Albie but I know a few Arthur's aged 4 and under. Why does it matter if the name is popular?

A few suggestions of similar names:
Reggie
Bertie
Oscar
Jasper
Rupert
George
Freddie
Charlie

partyatthepalace · 14/05/2021 15:56

I love Arthur too, but yes they are, Albie either alone or as a nn for Albert

How about Alberic? Or -
Alistair
Rufus
Miles
Augustus
Silas
Jerome
Jethro
Stanley
Cassian
Casper
Sidney
Ernest
Diggory
Peter
Patrick
Robert
Amos

I think you probably want to avoid Aldo and Arlo, I quite like them but they are v much names of the moment, and may end up super popular

Moonlaserbearwolf · 14/05/2021 15:57

Don’t rely on Mumsnet! It’s not representative of society...
Look up ONS baby name statistics if you want to see how popular a name is. I wouldn’t have thought either Arthur or Albie are amongst the most popular. If they are your favourite - go for it!

Vendeevola · 14/05/2021 15:58

Thanks all, some good suggestions.

I think we were just trying to avoid Arthur so any potential child isn’t finding themselves surrounded by other Arthur’s. It is by far our favourite though.

It’s such luck of the drawer OP. We don’t have any Arthur’s at our school/nursery. I’ve only met 1 in the past 5 years (out of c.500 children). On the other hand, my daughter has an extremely unusual name. Never thought we’d meet another. Statistically we shouldn’t have. Yet there is one in her class!
If you love Arthur you should pick it - great name.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 14/05/2021 16:06

*luck of the draw even!

ILoveStickers · 14/05/2021 16:10

Lol at luck of the drawer 😂

These things can be really variable. For what it's worth, I've not come across any toddlers called Arthur. Others will know loads.

Vendeevola · 14/05/2021 16:12

Thanks all, I think we will reconsider Arthur, nickname Artie maybe. Bear

I would agree Arthur and Albie are very ‘of the moment’ and I know a lot of both of them (three Arthurs under two and five Albies under 5) with Arthur ranking number 4 in the most popular names lists (2019) coupled with the statistically popular Alfie, Archie and Arlo I think you’ll feel like you come across a lot of them. That being said, if it’s a name you love, I really don’t think you should let popularity put you off. Seems a shame not to use your favourite name and settle for one you like less just because you might come across another. As a PP said, you might not come across another in your son’s school but might encounter multiples of a much rarer name!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 14/05/2021 16:15

My advise is pick a name you love and not think about how popular it is. There is no guarantee that your child won’t end up in a class with another kid with the same name no matter how unique you think you’re being.

Marcipex · 14/05/2021 17:00

I don’t know any little Arthurs or Albies. None at all.
I know a lot of Alfies, Freddies and Noahs.

Artie is dire though. He’ll be Farty Artie.

BackforGood · 14/05/2021 17:08

If you love Arthur, then use it.

I do think popularity of names is both geographical and related to your demograph. I've not come across any 'Albies' and I work with 0 - 5s across a large City, so come across a lot of names of little people.

I don't hear 'Arthur' often either.

Violetlavenders · 14/05/2021 17:25

My advise is pick a name you love and not think about how popular it is

I wish my parents had thought about popularity.

There are so many lovely names out there. I'm sure you'll find a great name that you love that's not so widely used.

How about
Alistair
Anthony
Caspar
Marcus
Quentin
Reuben
Vincent
Peter
Christopher

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/05/2021 17:32

If you like it that much I wouldn’t let popularity put you off.

Lotsachocolateplease · 14/05/2021 17:54

Arthur is fairly popular no.4 in ons baby manes 2019. It’s risen in popularity sharply in recent years.
If popularity is going to put you off a name then looking at ons is a guide to how popular your chosen name is and how it’s risen in recent years.
Some suggestions
Isaac
Joel
Edward
Benjamin

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/05/2021 21:38

Asa?
Alaric?

Alden?

Ellmau · 16/05/2021 16:40

Alexander
Alfred
Ailred
Arlo

But if you like Arthur the best, go for it.

My friend has 2 under 5 grandsons (cousins, not sibs) called Arthur and Albie.
It’s really strange how over the decades a list of names suddenly becomes favoured by so many hundreds/thousands of people. It’s almost like there is something in the air that effects only people of childbearing age and which leaves the rest of the population rather bemused! Even parents who think they have chosen a less common name can suddenly find that name is super popular. I know my mother did.
So OP it’s a balancing act. If you want a less used name keep looking until you find one you like as much or better than Arthur and hope you aren’t starting a trend or just stick with Arthur which you know is bog standard 2020’s.
Good luck

Horehound · 16/05/2021 21:05

Just bloody pick the name you like and stop trying to be "cool" or "alternative".

Arthur is a lovely name.

CarlottaValdez · 16/05/2021 21:05

There is one Albie and one Arthur in my DS’ class. I think they’re both really nice names.
