For a girl. Tell me your honest thoughts please, I am bracing myself!

I do like Hero.

But I think it would be a hard name to carry off. Lots of super heroes around in popular culture.

SouthOfFrance · 13/05/2021 18:22

Do you like it Op? This is your child, your chance to name her. For all the people who don't like it on this thread or in real life, well, I bet you probably wouldn't like half the names they've chosen for their child either.

It's a lovely unusual name, and once it's your daughters name it will really suit her. People you know won't be making negative comments unless they are pretty rude. I think most people would associate it with the classical name, not the modern word but I suppose some won't have heard of it.

I have only met one Hero in real life and she was lovely and really suited the name.

Chilldonaldchill · 13/05/2021 18:23

I really like it as a Shakespearean name - but I think Hera is much much more wearable. Most people will just think you've named her after the word.

partyatthepalace · 13/05/2021 18:28

I like it! I think it depends, are a lot of your cohort going to have some clue it’s a girl’s name? If so, I would - if not, I probably wouldn’t.

Hera would be easier. Honor, Juno, Cleo maybe?

BilboBercow · 13/05/2021 18:30

I've never read much ado about nothing and I'll admit my first thought is that Hero is a Japanese man's name .

Do you really think most would associate it with the classical name? I do not!

I think unusual names are one thing but names where the word version is so heavily used are another.

I like it but would not use it.

VenusClapTrap · 13/05/2021 18:57

It’s lovely, but I wouldn’t want to be saddled with it if I’m honest.

Like a pp, it makes me think of the Keanu Reeves version of Much Ado; a film that sticks in my memory because a horse I used to have lessons on was in it, ridden by Robert Sean Leonard. He was a lovely horse, called Dusty. He could rear on command and roll over and play dead and all sorts of things.

Sorry for meandering off the point there. Blush

Auxence · 13/05/2021 19:01

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme

I wouldn’t be naming her after the character or the mythological figure specifically, my main reasoning is that I just love the name and love that it’s a lesser used, strong sounding classical name.

I do agree that many people will probably just think it’s a really modern word name, which does put me off a bit.

Interesting that a few of you know or have met a Hero. I’m glad to hear there are women and girls out there with this fabulous name!

Hero is DD1 middle name. Is that an option?

Auxence · 13/05/2021 19:07

Ooh lovely Johnny! Yes that’s definitely an option, although it seems a bit of a shame to hide it in the middle (I’m sure you chose a gorgeous first name too though!!)

cnversation · 13/05/2021 19:08

Don't do that

ForThePurposeOfTheTape · 13/05/2021 19:09

It's a great name but if she's not brave or able to shrug off the Bonnie Tyler song (I need a hero... 🎵) then it'll end up being annoying for her.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 13/05/2021 19:12

The thing about making it a middle name is it kinda sorta puns on the English meaning too?

So say her first name is Harriet, it's like

Harriet Hero !
Which I just thought was fun. I do love the name but thought she might get teased on the playground.

Tal45 · 13/05/2021 19:12

I think it's a strong sounding name because it sounds masculine, like a boys name. I would hate to be called it. I think it's a shame you don't like Hera but Beatrix is much better than Hero IMO. Unless you know the Much ado about nothing character it doesn't sound like a name, just like you really, really rate your child highly.

Mamin · 13/05/2021 19:13

I absolutely love it! I can just imagine a little Hero. How cute.

Go for it.

Everyone has always got an opinion about a name anyway

Mamin · 13/05/2021 19:15

Kids will always find a way to take the p*ss out of a name regardless of whether it's common/normal or really unusual

flossletsfloss · 13/05/2021 19:15

Absolutely LOVE it! Was on my list. DH liked it but didn't love it.

CaraherEIL · 13/05/2021 19:15

It’s so beautiful, and has a genuine provenance so I wouldn’t have any qualms about using it.

SprayedWithDettol · 13/05/2021 19:15

My first thought was Hero Wantage too.

PattyPan · 13/05/2021 19:16

It’s a no from me. I actually read a book once where the father was a Shakespeare professor and named his daughters Beatrice and Hero and Hero got teased because of her name and hated it. It was a fiction book but I think that’s realistic!

PineappleTart · 13/05/2021 19:16

It's such a big name to live up to

PiratePetespajamas · 13/05/2021 19:18

I love it and think you should go for it! I’m a right snob and wouldn’t care what anyone who didn’t know it was a literary name thought! Grin I’ve known one IRL - mid 40s, a lawyer. Suited her great, never caused any problems.

lightningpeach · 13/05/2021 19:19

God no

Nishky · 13/05/2021 19:20

I love it. Beautiful name

SouthOfFrance · 13/05/2021 19:28

People get teased about whatever name they have as far as I can see. You can be named something really ordinary & still have people sing a song to you about your name, or make up something unkind.
