Thalia

I am looking at girls names for DD3 (due October) and need a name which ends in an a.

I have come across Thalia. I love the idea of Thalia due to it being the name of a Greek Grace/muse. However I am a true over thinker and am wondering about the pronunciation of it.

Would you naturally say:

  1. Tar-Lee-ah
  2. Tal-Lee-ah (as in short for Natalia or is this usually spelt Talia)
  3. Thay-Lee-ah
  4. Something I can’t think of.

I am in NW England if that makes any difference.
Thanks

I think I’d have said thar-Lee-ah but never met anyone with that name

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/05/2021 08:09

I would say Tar lee uh but if I was corrected to Thar I wouldn't be surprised.
I like it.

DJattheendoftheworld · 11/05/2021 08:10

I would think Tha-lee-ah? I've never seen it before, but do know several Talias.

Southern accent. I also say bbble barth and garden parth

Equimum · 11/05/2021 08:14

The one I know uses the first. SE England.

KitchenWarrior · 11/05/2021 08:19

The one I know rhymes it with "failure"!

Nice name though!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/05/2021 08:20

If I'd not come across it and saw it written, 3. But once I'd heard it pronounced with a T rather than th, then 1. (I live in the NW but my accent is southern).

It's a lovely name, and also used for my favourite white narcissus - the most lovely graceful flower.Smile

THAHlia with emphasis on the first part of the name. (I think) its a Greek name and Greeks pronounce it with the THAH sound. There is always the name Talia.

The Talia pronunciation has a different feel to me and I put it in a bracket with Aylas, Aaliyahs etc.

eandz13 · 11/05/2021 08:30

I'm NW too and I'd pronounce THAHlia. Lovely name. I know one and not really heard anyone pronounce her name any other way.

MaryPat · 11/05/2021 08:31
  1. Beautiful name.
Quitelikeacatslife · 11/05/2021 08:34

I know someone with this name snd it's nice. I used to say 1. But corrected it to 2 now as that is how she prefers it

  1. is correct.

Ancient Greek name, very pretty.

I was at school with one, she was very clever.

Tulipomania · 11/05/2021 08:40

There is also a very pretty daffodil called Thalia.

www.sarahraven.com/flowers/bulbs/narcissi/narcissus-thalia.htm

Its name is often mispronounced (Monty Don being the main culprit).

Palavah · 11/05/2021 08:44
  1. THAH-leeah/ THAH-lyah

Talia, or Tahlia I would pronounce like your 1.

I believe Tahlia is Hebrew but I don't know the correct pronunciation

JustKeep · 11/05/2021 08:47

Could you spell it Talia? I’d say that Tah-lee-a

I couldn’t say “th” properly until my teens, so would have been introducing myself as “Failure” for years, I always think names with th, s, or r are a bit risky given how many children struggle with those sounds.

WestminsterAbi · 11/05/2021 08:50

Thalia is Greek and said using THA. However, like many names (Eleanor, Cleo, Helena, Anya etc) it is pronounced differently depending on where you are. There is nothing wrong with using the Tar pronunciation if that is what you prefer. I am not keen on the Tar pronunciation as you have written but then I don't like the name Tara either. How about TAH lia?

WestminsterAbi · 11/05/2021 08:52

As in the a of bag rather than the a of car.

FlattestWhite · 11/05/2021 08:52

There's a Thalia in the Marlow books series. Complains of everyone misunderstanding it as "Failure". Nickname "Tim" instead.

But it does sound like a pretty name otherwise, and it many accents, it wouldn't actually sound like 'Failure' - wouldn't have occurred to me in my childhood accent for sure, so it took me a while to work out what the book character was on about.

viques · 11/05/2021 08:53

OK name, just as long as you don’t decide to use it as a middle name with the first name Jenny.

MNOverinvestor · 11/05/2021 08:53

I love the name - it's a character in the Kingcote novels by Antonia Forest. When Thalia says her name for the first time, another character hears it as 'Failure' so I've always assumed 3 is the correct pronunciation.
