Vowel Name Crisis

IsabellaMarie · 10/05/2021 23:02

Hi everyone! I’m not the usual participate in these forums, I’m not a mom/mom to be, & I’m actually 15! I’m helping on the name search for my little cousin to be & we’re a bit lost with boy names.

The name needs to be a vowel, not blatantly biblical (Adam, Elijah etc.), nothing extremely common/popular (Oliver/Asher), but also not too out there an usual (Atticus/Apollo), it also has to flow nicely with Isabella, Isaac, & Autumn, and bonus points if it has any nature ties to it!

Back story:
So there are 4 cousins in my family, me (Isabella), My little cousin Isaac, his little sister Autumn, and their Half sibling to be. All our names go nicely together and have a bit of a theme. If it’s a girl DM is set on naming her Rosalie Grace, which I’m not super thrilled about because it’s not a vowel (I was rooting for Ivy Rose). But if it’s a boy and we can find a good vowel name, we can keep the theme.

DM is keen on Aslan, Everest, & Oakley.
Where as DD want something a little simpler like Abel, Eli, Ethan etc.

So far the top contenders are:
Isaac, Autumn & Elliot
Isaac, Autumn & Oakley
Isaac, Autumn & Aslan
Or Isaac, Autumn & Everest
But nobody is really happy with any of those names.....
Please help Mumsnet Moms!!!!

P.S any middle name suggestions would also be appreciated! Smile

Aengus, Oisín, Eoin, Iarla, Eoghan. A few Irish ones for you, OP.

Enough4me · 11/05/2021 00:10

If it's a girl she could be Ally for short, so you keep the vowel sound.

For a boy...
Emmet,
Austin,
Edgar
Alvin

IsabellaMarie · 11/05/2021 00:54

Ohhhh Ally is such a good idea!!!!!

Elias sounds great but I'd say it's very biblical - then again, Isaac is one of the most biblical names I can think of so it is really a problem? Because thetr are lots of biblical names that would go beautifully so it seems a shame to have a 'no bible name' rule, especially as it doesn't make sense when you have an Isaac? If you could include biblical names you could have Abel, Ezra, Eli, Asher, all go nicely.

JemimaJoy · 11/05/2021 06:51

Alban?

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 11/05/2021 07:30

I am curious that you say that there so many people's choices and tastes to take into consideration but really there aren't! The only person who has a say is the mother of the child! And the father!

daisypond · 11/05/2021 07:36

Isaac is very biblical. Do you mean because there’s already a biblical name you don’t want another?
Otto
Ivan
Avery
Eric

TorringtonDean · 11/05/2021 08:11

Uriah, Unwin, Ingo, Owen, Oscar?

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 11/05/2021 08:29

Aslan - lion/Christ metaphor in Narnia, but perhaps that isn't well known in the US?
Everest - he'd get a lot of window jokes in the UK, but otherwise also a bit weird to be named after a mountain.
Oakley-Dokley (Simpsons)

Alfie
Oscar
Enyon
Uther
Ulrich
Ivan
Edward
Edgar
Edmund
Eugene
Tree names: Ash, Alder, Aspen, Elder, Osier,

Malvarrosa · 11/05/2021 09:37

I love Eli out of the names you’ve mentioned - could be a stand-alone or short for Elias, Elian, Eliot(t) - or Elijah, but I think your family had veto’d that. Also really like Emmett.

Adding a few - apologies for any accidental duplicates or already-veto’d:

Aaron
Adair
Adrian
Afton - a river in Scotland. (This is a unisex name.)
Aiken - old English name meaning “from the oak woods”
Alasdair, Alastair, Alistair, Alister
Andre
Andreas
Angus
Ansel, Anselm - nature connection through the US landscape photographer Ansel Adams
Anton, Antony
Arlo
Arno - a river in Italy, used as a stand-alone male name - also a short form of Arnold, meaning eagle.
Arden - Scottish unisex name, from an old Gaelic word meaning “high place”.
Arran - a Scottish island and range of hills. (VERY popular boys’ name in Scotland, but probably not in the US?) Same Gaelic root as Arden.
Aster - old (male) name in several European languages meaning “star”. Popular among German hipsters/hippies at the moment. There’s also a flower with this name.
Eamon - traditional and still very popular in Ireland, probably unusual in the US but easy to spell/pronounce
Efraim - had an American coworker with this name, pronounced EEF-r’m. I’d seen other versions, usually three syllables (eef-RAI-eem) and thought that this version is very down-to-earth but not overused.
Evander
Innes, Inis - old Gaelic name/word meaning “island”
Ivor - yew tree in various Celtic languages. Maybe too close soundwise to Isaac.
Ocean
Yves - another “yew tree” name - might be confused in the US for “Eve”, though?

Do some of you realise they're naming a child, not a puppy?

A friend named her son Albie (not Albert with MN albie) It grew on me.

IsabellaMarie · 11/05/2021 16:33

By lots I really just mean them 😂They have very different taste so everyone else is trying to help them find a middle ground! It’s important to them that everyone likes the name!

Ambrose
Eliezer
Innes
Oswin
Uther

IsabellaMarie · 11/05/2021 16:44

So Isaac and Autumn have a different mom to the soon to be new baby! DM isn’t super keen on biblical names, but I think she would be open to them as long as they aren’t common! I would LOVE if she was open to biblical as it would fit beautiful and I agree it’s a little silly to have an Isaac, but not be open to biblical names. Personally I’m a big fan of Abel, Ezra, Elijah, etc. and I think my uncle is too so maybe they can still be considered!

OP posts:
Saes · 11/05/2021 16:47

not blatantly biblical
so not Ethan, Abel, Eli and Elias then.

Aslan is too Narnia.
Everest is too double-glazing
Oakley is too horse-trailer

On the subject of horse boxes, Ifor/Ivor?
(Ifor is E-vorr not Iffor)

How about Aaron - I know it is biblical but it goes with Isaac.

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing, Enlyd isn't a name and it isn't a Welsh name.

Crunchymum · 11/05/2021 16:54

Missing the point spectacularly but since when is Asher as common / popular names.

I find it a bit indulgent when parents worry about sibling names matching (I get it, I do and some names go better than others BUT it's not big deal). However I draw the line at "themed names" for cousins.

Nor do I think MN is the place for a 15 year old.

IsabellaMarie · 11/05/2021 16:59

I agree even though there very cool names, kids are cruel and I think the names are too easy to make fun of.

We know so many Aaron’s so that’s also off the table. Even though Ethan and Eli are biblical, for us at least, it’s not very obvious so those are still contenders.

OP posts:
wildeverose · 11/05/2021 17:05

I cannot understand why it's anyone but the parents of the baby's decision on what to name them

IsabellaMarie · 11/05/2021 17:09

Maybe it’s different where you live because Asher is quite common in the US! If I remember correctly it’s in the top 10-20 most popular baby names.

I can see why you’d think it’s a bit ridiculous to have a “theme” for the cousins, but seeing as you don’t know our family it’s rather irrelevant for you to comment on it! I’m actually the only child from my mom and since nobody else is having children except my uncle and his wife the theme stems from his children!

And with all due respect I understand that these are your opinion, but there’s no need for distaste. Nor do I think it’s needed for you to comment on it. I guess my family just works different then yours!

OP posts:
IsabellaMarie · 11/05/2021 17:13

I agree! If you read my original post you’ll see I said I’m helping, not deciding! I know both of them pretty well so they asked me to find some names that would be contenders! That’s why I’m very grateful for all the names everyone has been suggesting! It’s wonderful how many new names I’m seeing!

OP posts:
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/05/2021 19:37

@Saes I got it from a list of names I saw on holiday in Wales. Not sure why else it would be there!

It’s not the new Balonz I assure you!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/05/2021 19:39

I haven’t named a child Enlyd but my kids adopted it as our car’s name!

TorringtonDean · 12/05/2021 00:16

Ulysses! Fab name and also a vowel.

Scarby9 · 12/05/2021 00:20
