What does this name make people think of/ are there any negative associations?

Was on our shortlist for DD but spelled -wen as for a girl. Love it.

Newestname001 · 07/05/2021 16:50

It makes me think of Eowyn from Lord of the Rings - a noblewoman and Shieldmaiden.

(Well you did ask!!) 🌹

Peachbubble · 07/05/2021 17:29

Love it, either spelt that way or Elowen. Not sure what it makes me think of, I just like it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/05/2021 18:48

No negative associations but I'm not sure about the spelling (living in Wales - Wyn usually looks more masculine to me). Elowen is pretty though - but I think it might gradually be getting more popular outside Cornwall (although this could be a good thing, as you might be less likely to get pronunciation issues).

Elllicam · 07/05/2021 18:49

My friend has an Ellowyn and she’s adorable.

KirstenBlest · 07/05/2021 19:44

It's Elowen, with the stress on the middle syllable, and it's Cornish.

Your spelling looks masculine - looks like Elwyn, a man's name, and for anyone who is interested, not Welsh.

pigletmoon · 07/05/2021 19:45

Elowen is beautiful. I met an Elodie the other day too - lovely names.

CaffiSaliMali · 07/05/2021 20:06

Agree it's Elowen. Welsh, Breton and Cornish are all Brythonic languages - in Welsh 'wen' names are feminine and 'wyn' names masculine. So Elowyn looks wrong to me.

Elowen is very pretty and I'd assume you had links to Cornwall or were Cornish.

Mysterian · 07/05/2021 20:10

I'd think probably Welsh and might know some magic.

MooseMoose · 07/05/2021 21:30

Agree with pp..The spelling looks wrong - 'wyn' seems masculine. Elowen is the usual spelling I think. Beautiful written down, but I always think it sounds a bit clunky when spoken.

Bramblebutter · 07/05/2021 21:50

I like it. Don't love it. Think I don't like the o in the middle. Name makes me think of lord of the rings or some kind of elvish thing

Tillygetsit · 07/05/2021 22:50

Elowen is lovely but may be sjortened yo join the vast number of Els and Ellies. Only negative I can think of.

Marcis · 08/05/2021 09:18

I think having the ‘wyn’ makes it masculine at the end and means it’s pronounced ‘win’
Having ‘wen’ at the end makes it feminine and pronounced ‘when’

Motherofmonsters · 08/05/2021 09:25

My friend has an Elowyn, she is named after the lord of the rings character

CornishTiger · 08/05/2021 09:28

First thought was the masculine wyn.

Elowen is used here but not a frequent name. It’s one we considered for a girl.

Aerielview · 08/05/2021 09:34

First time I've heard it, and it's beautiful

Chickoletta · 08/05/2021 09:39

I’m Cornish and love the name. It means elm tree I believe? I have taught several with both spellings but agree that the feminine spelling should technically be Elowen and the pronunciation Ell-OH-wen but know lots who pronounce it ELL-oh-wen.

Blueskytoday06 · 08/05/2021 09:46

The only thing I can think of is that it will constantly be misspelled and / or pronounced

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 08/05/2021 09:51

Made me think of Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron books.

Very pretty name-but I would agree with PP's re the masculine spelling-otherwise she/you will have a lifetime of correcting spelling and explaining it which will grow tiresome...

Synchrony · 08/05/2021 09:56

I wouldn't be sure how to pronounce it with the wyn ending.
It makes me think of Mumsnet as I've never heard the name in real life, but it seems to pop up here all the time!

Edenember · 08/05/2021 11:57

Prefer Elowen. Agree with other pps that because in Welsh -wyn is masculine and -wen feminine, this spelling looks masculine to me.

partyatthepalace · 08/05/2021 13:15

I like it, is getting quite popular - it’s usually wen at the end, which - I think - is traditionally female, wyn is usually male
