Hattie or Indie ?

Hi everyone, just wanted to ask opinion on these two names please? I like the way Hattie is what I would call a sort of vintage (?!) name.. but I also like Indie even though I would class that as more ‘new’ - if that makes sense! If you’re not keen on either would there be anything similar you would be willing to suggest? Thanks for your help in advance !

If you like "ee" ending names, I'd personally choose one that's a more substantial feeling name in it's own right (rather than something that's more of a nn - many people would assume Hattie is really Harriet or Henrietta and Indie an India or Indira on the BC).

Cecily, Sophie, Emily, Lily, Briony, Jessamy, Mary/Marie, Amy, Amelie, Sylvie, Rosalie, Coralie, Elodie, Zoe, Xanthe etc

MarjorieBouvier · 03/05/2021 18:04

Hattie.

Indie is awful, and reminds me of that Katie Hopkins rant.

DotDotDotDotDot · 03/05/2021 19:20

Hattie is cute actually. I’m not keen on Indie, I don’t know if it’s just me but I don’t like that it has ‘die’ in it. Anyway I’ve met quite a few baby Indies in the last couple of years so it’s relatively popular around here. Maybe Cassie, Marnie or Edie?

DungeonKeeper · 03/05/2021 19:33

I prefer Indie, really not keen on Hattie.

It’s not just you I didn’t like the “die” in it either ha!! I considered Indy or Indi ... but I think it probably looks better with the “ie” ...

Thanks for everyone’s help and suggestions so far!

That’s what my 5yr old said Grin ! I’m not sure why, I just like it! I have always liked the name Etta which is maybe similar, but OH doesn’t like. He likes Hattie but not Hetty..

MooseMoose · 03/05/2021 20:47

Etta is nice. How about Esther, or Scarlett or Juliet / Juliette?

SE13Mummy · 03/05/2021 20:55

I much prefer Hattie of the two. Because I like names that have multiple nickname options, I'd choose Harriet as her official name so as she got older, she would have the option of calling herself Harriet, Harry, Hattie, Hats, Ettie. To me, names ending in an 'ee' sound (or 'uh') don't feel as strong as those ending with a definite sound. Suggestions of names that I think are similar (or have nicknames that are similar)...

Agnes (Aggie, Nessie)
Charlotte (Lottie, Charlie)
Cleo
Edith (Edie)
Emmeline (Emmy)
Florence (Flo, Florrie, Flossie)
Imogen (Immy, Mo, Jenny)
Mabel
Megan (Meg, Meggy)
Maud/e
Miriam (Miri, Mim)
Primrose (Prim, Rose, Rosy)
Ruth (Ruthie)
Sorrel
Susan

Or, if you really like the 'ee' sound...
Betty
Betsy
Cecily
Kitty
Lucy
Maggie
Polly
Sally

RuggeryBuggery · 03/05/2021 20:56

I prefer Hattie but as short for Harriet

Edenember · 03/05/2021 21:10

Love Indie, but short for Indiana. I realise that’s really marmite, downmarket to some. Don’t like Hattie, but love Hettie, don’t know why one and not the other. I’d only ever use Hettie as short for something though and I’d feel similarly about Hattie. Indie is (marginally) more of a name in its own right than that I feel.

sara9 · 03/05/2021 21:12

@Autumn55

Nancy!! always been one of my top girls names

Hohofortherobbers · 03/05/2021 21:18

I love Hattie

Teeshirt · 03/05/2021 21:37

Hattie out of those two.
Polly? Seems more valid as a stand-alone name.

incognitoon · 03/05/2021 21:39

Indie.

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 03/05/2021 21:42

Of the two I'd pick Indie. Really, really not into this Harriet/Hattie thing. Just seems so drab and frumpy.

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 03/05/2021 21:43

But some of the names mentioned by pp are far better options. Polly is lovely. As is Nancy. And Cleo.

Autumn55 · 03/05/2021 21:51

Thanks for the replies and the suggestions! I guess like most names it’s quite split! I can’t make my mind up on Harriet.. for some reason I like Hattie in its own right. Thanks to everyone who’s taken time to help/ offer ideas Smile

Hattie is lovely. I'd have Harriet on the bc though I know not everyone will agree.

I'm not keen on Indie, it's a bit (sorry) downmarket.

earthyfire · 04/05/2021 01:17

Hattie and I like Hettie too.

partyatthepalace · 04/05/2021 20:18

I like Hattie if it’s short for Harriet, it’s quite little girly on its own and it gives her options
Indie is downmarket so no

Zoe, Circe, Mary, Cicely / Cecily, Verity, Felicity
I know an Isabella nn Bonnie - I think Bonnie does need a full name, but it’s sweet
Dorothea nn Dorey is nice too
Winifred nn Winnie
Minnie (deffo not a full name!) can be a nn for anything like Mary, Marianne, Maria etc

Cbeebiesrehab · 04/05/2021 22:08

Hattie

CuddlyDudley71 · 08/05/2021 19:38
