Opinions on Cian?

We’re looking for an Irish name to honour my heritage but one that isn’t too difficult to pronounce as we live in England

I also like Cillian but dp isn’t keen x

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I really like it. Two possible downsides: people will try to pronounce it like cyan, and it could be misheard as Ciaran. But it's really nice.

Peeteea · 03/05/2021 09:25

Cian is easy enough, not common but not unheard of and I think most people would know how to say it in the areas of England I have lived- mispronunciation might happen but I would think it’s generally straightforward for most people. Let us know how you get on! 😊

RuthW · 03/05/2021 09:25

I would spell it Kian. It's a reasonable name.

Gullible2021 · 03/05/2021 09:27

I’d be unsure of the pronunciation. See-Ann? Cy-an? Keen?

Arrierttyclock · 03/05/2021 09:43

Really don't like it sorry, much prefer Cillian

RedactedTaeFeck · 03/05/2021 10:20

I like Cian, but my favourite would be Cormac.

Tal45 · 03/05/2021 13:26

I really like Cian but I don't know if I'm pronouncing it right - Key ann?

Teeshirt · 03/05/2021 13:29

I like it. I live in England and know two.

Cheeeeislifenow · 03/05/2021 13:31

I have a Cian. Never mispronounced but I live in ireland.and it's common. Really dislike Kian. That is anglicized.

Woodlandbelle · 03/05/2021 13:33

I love Cian but other options could be
Finn
Aidan
Darragh
Dylan
Senan

All quite popular Irish names and easy to pronounce.

Roodicus21 · 03/05/2021 13:34

Prefer Cillian but do like Cian

DramaAlpaca · 03/05/2021 16:37

I love it.

KEY-un.
Milligan85 · 11/05/2021 20:04

My brother's names are Darragh, Ruaidhri (rory) and Tomás.
Other names are Donnecha ( Donn-eh-ka)
And we love Dabhan (davin)

Drunkenmonkey · 12/05/2021 08:48

It's ok but I much prefer Cillian and you could actually use Cian as a nickname if you wanted.

Synchrony · 12/05/2021 10:10

I knew a man called this at uni. He didn't have any problems with it.

BettyUnderswoob · 12/05/2021 16:47

I like it 👍🏼

CoalCraft · 13/05/2021 06:40

It comes across as a bit trendy to me but if that doesn't bother you, go ahead! It's a lovely name.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 13/05/2021 06:45

It's a lovely name. Also like the other C names above. I don't think you'd use it as a nickname for Cillian, they are two separate names. Go with the name you like. Conor another nice one. Kian is dreadful.

MindtheBelleek · 13/05/2021 06:48

God, Cian couldn’t be less trendy. Grin
Apparentlystillchilled · 13/05/2021 06:48

I ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ Cian. We didn't go for it because it didn't go with our surname. Also love Cillian, Ciaran and Cormac, which have been mentioned upthread. Someone suggested Cian as a nickname for Cillian- I'm Irish but living in England for over 20 years but I've never hear of Cian as a nickname. To me that would be like naming a child James but deciding to call him John. Both lovely names but not linked (unlike say John and Jack).

JemimaTiggywinkle · 13/05/2021 06:51

I like Cian.
Even if people don’t know how to pronounce it from reading it, once they’ve been told it’s not difficult.

Lalliella · 13/05/2021 08:53

Love it, good choice.

GoEasyJulia · 14/05/2021 22:02

I like Cian, also Conall

Anoisagusaris · 14/05/2021 22:07

Cian isn’t a nickname for Cillian.
