Need reassurance on my choice

Hi, I had my baby girl 10 weeks ago. Had so much indecision over her name while pregnant. We eventually named her Elizabeth with Elsie as her nickname but I keep wishing that we'd gone for Annabel. Don't want to change her name so hoping for some reassurance that we made the right choice. Have introduced her to most as Elsie but then registered her as Elizabeth to give her options as she gets older but now also worried that she'll never get called Elizabeth just Elsie. Elizabeth/Elsie seems harder to interchange than Annabel/Belle would be.

Is Elsie short for Elizabeth?
If it helps Annabelle is very popular from my encounters so she won’t be one of many in school

Teeshirt · 03/05/2021 10:04

Is Elsie short for Elizabeth?
Yes, of course.

FeedMeSantiago · 03/05/2021 10:17

Elizabeth nn Elsie is lovely OP. Elizabeth is a great name with so many nickname options she can choose from when she's older if she wants to - Beth, Libby, Lizzy, Betsy, Eliza etc. It's also nice as a full name.

Annabel is nice too but it's quite popular at the moment whereas Elizabeth is more timeless.

ZenNudist · 03/05/2021 10:54

Just start calling her Elizabeth. Let her choose her own Nick na me for it as she gets older. I have Alexander tried to nickname xander but it never caught on. He chose Alex when it comes to writing a shorter name.

Elizabeth is a great name. If you have another dd you can call her Annabel.

Edenember · 03/05/2021 11:19

I much prefer Elizabeth to Annabel, they are both broadly the same type of name that wouldn’t seem inconsistent on sisters but Elizabeth is much more strong, classic and less twee in my opinion. As for shortened forms, I also prefer the options for Elizabeth. Anna is far more well known as a name in its own right than Elsie, and every other girl is Belle / Bella at the minute due to the popularity of Isabell(a/e).

I LOVE Elsie!

I wish I had called my 2nd Daughter that!

cptartapp · 03/05/2021 11:25

I love Elizabeth.
Don't like Elsie or Annabel at all.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 03/05/2021 12:20

Elsie is much better than Annabel

AdaColeman · 03/05/2021 12:32

Elizabeth is a beautiful name, I've never heard of Elsie as an nn for it though, and am not at all keen on it. You've given her a lovely name, why not use it?
Her nickname will develop independently, from the many options of Elizabeth.

MyPanda · 03/05/2021 12:37

Elizabeth is soooo much nicer than Annabel! And Elsie is a great NN, or there's always the option of going with a different NN or using the full name.. that's the beauty of Elizabeth.

(My dds middle name is Elisabeth and I actually regret it slightly just because if I ever have another I'd like to use it for her Smile)

Flymetothestars · 03/05/2021 12:38

Elizabeth is one of my favourite names
Annabel is not

Frankiefarr · 03/05/2021 13:23

Annabel makes me think of 1980s large hairdos and shoulder pads

MercyBodle · 03/05/2021 14:05

Elizabeth is lovely. Though I like Annabel too, I much prefer the nickname Elsie over nickname Belle. Elsie is a lovely and natural nickname for Elizabeth.

I would just make sure you also use Elizabeth, not just Elsie, to make sure she gets to use both. I know of people who have chosen both a more formal name and a nickname upfront. They make both names work by always writing the formal name, ie Elizabeth, and introducing as Elizabeth, but then often, but not always, using the Elsie form in home and everyday situations. The kids I know are comfortable answering to and moving from one version of their name to another.

Elizabeth is lovely, although I wouldn't have chosen Elsie as a nn, it's a bit 'parlourmaid', she'll have lots of other choices though if she doesn't like it.

ChilliChaos · 03/05/2021 14:38

I named my daughter Elspeth with the intention of having Elsie as her day to day name.
She’s a Betty

DarkDarkNight · 03/05/2021 14:43

I much prefer Elizabeth to Annabel. There are so many options for your daughter to choose if she doesn’t want to go by Elsie, but Elizabeth is beautiful in its own right.

StevieNix · 03/05/2021 14:45

I love Elizabeth not so keen on Elsie but I don't hate it. My refurbishment for Elizabeth is either Libby or Liza.

StevieNix · 03/05/2021 14:46

Eurgh sorry don't know where refurbishment came from (bloody autocorrect) I meant favourite nickname Confused

Cbeebiesrehab · 03/05/2021 17:46

I really like Annabel but prefer Annie and a little indifferent to Elizabeth but quite like Elsie. What I will say is I disagree with those who say parents can’t predetermine a nickname. We did just this and gave my daughter a day to day name which is not the natural diminutive of her formal name and it stuck-she’s never been called anything different nor chosen to be called anything different. On a different note I prefer it when the nickname/diminutive starts with the same letter as the formal name as it helps with initials and stuff if she chooses to remain known as the diminutive-so another reason for Elizabeth/Elsie over Annabel/Belle for me.

FernGilly · 03/05/2021 18:01

Beautiful name, beautiful nickname. You have made a lovely choice for your daughter.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/05/2021 23:23

Elizabeth is lovely imo - the ultimate classic, timeless girls name. It's much nicer to me than Annabel, sorry - Annabel sounds more frilly, a bit 80's Sloane, and blends into the other top 100 Belle/Bella names (Isabelle, Arabella).

One of the benefits of Elizabeth is the myriad of nn's (as opposed to just Anna/Annie and Belle). Elsie is cute but you could always try calling her Elizabeth (people would soon get used to it) and let her decide what she wants to be known as once she's old enough to have an opinion?

Carbara · 03/05/2021 23:27

It’s fine, and it has a tonne of nicknames. Annabelle is dreadful, so is Bell, you made the right choice!

partyatthepalace · 04/05/2021 20:21

Much prefer Elizabeth to Annabel - Elizabeth is a great name

I am not crazy about Elsie and because it’s used as a full name you might be right that it won’t switch over - but you could easily switch now to the full name - or if you want a more nicknamey nn like Libby

Marcis · 07/05/2021 03:22

I’m curious- are you the poster who made a thread about name Elsie, Matilda and Annabel also came up, Elizabeth was your husbands favourite?

I’d say you made the right decision!

MadeOfStarStuff · 07/05/2021 20:53

I absolutely love Elizabeth and not fussed on Annabel so I think you’ve made the right choice
