Baby girl names help please!

I have a little boy and absolutely love his name and was convinced I was having another boy so had another boys name sorted.
We are having a girl and are struggling more than i thought on girls names.

I love the name Robin but I would want to spell it like the actual bird and not Robyn which is typically used for girls. I have two concerns holding me back on this name 1. The spelling (does it really need to be with a Y for a girl?) 2. I didn’t think it was that popular but have seen it recently on popular name lists so that puts me off slightly.

I want a name to go with my little boys which is traditional but not widely used...

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks x

I don't think Robin has to be with a Y for a girl, in fact I think it looks a lot nicer without. I had a book when I was younger called Robin the Rebel and she was a girl. There are lots of actresses etc called Robin not Robyn if you Google. I don't know about the popularity aspect, I don't know any baby Robin/ Robyns but my kids are older.

I don’t think the spelling matters in this instance, both are accepted spellings so spell it how you like. Check darkgreener website for popularity.

Thank you for responding so quickly. I have looked up female Robins previously but they are mainly American where it seems that Robin is spelt the same regardless of gender. It just seems to be a UK quirk that the female version is spelt with a Y. I am probably overthinking it Grin

The Robin spelling is nicer. You could use a feminine middle (not Rose/Grace/May/Rae - filler middle names and also surnames) name if you think it would help.

HarkAVagrant · 28/04/2021 11:14

Robin the Rebel was definitely British but she was from the 1930s I think! Here she is looking glam www.amazon.co.uk/ROBIN-REBEL-Rita-Coatts/dp/B000XZ1U24?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I love Robin the Rebel and had no idea that book exists so thank you!

Re middle names we are going for a family name which is girly so that would help with that point x

I love Robin, it’s on my girls list if I have another DD. I agree the y spelling looks odd somehow. Good luck, I say go for it!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 28/04/2021 12:00

Robin (whether on a boy or girl) looks much nicer to me. I've never understood Robyn - unless it's being used as a nn for Roberta (as I suppose you can spell a nn however you want) why misspell the name of the bird? Imo Robin is pleasant sounding unisex nature name - just like River, Rowan etc

Synchrony · 28/04/2021 15:47

I love Robin and also prefer that spelling for a girl.

sarah13xx · 28/04/2021 15:50

I think you can spell it however you like! The name we had picked for a girl is an unusual boy’s name in Scotland so it’s not even traditionally a girls name but we were going to use it (still will if we have a girl later). I don’t know how high up the popularity charts it is where you stay but I wouldn’t worry too much about that. I’ve found you can have names in the top 10 that you don’t know any babies called or you can have names way further down the list that you know multiple babies called. I’m a teacher so my main thing is avoiding a name other babies in our town is called if possible but you’re not going to know them all anyway

partyatthepalace · 28/04/2021 19:12

I much prefer Robin spelt like that for a girl and think it’s pretty usual.

I think Robyn is a weird 60s/70s variation (and slightly naff like Jayne) I know two older female Robins spelt like that, and it’s also Robin for both sexes in the US.

I bet Robyn will die out - go for Robin - it’s lovely -

PumpingPamela · 29/04/2021 09:37

Robin is a lovely name. It's getting more popular but still well out of the top 100 so I really wouldn't worry about that.

Love Robin. I wanted it for our daughter but husband said no🙄

She’s Joy instead.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 29/04/2021 10:52

@Bouch we love robin for our girl due in June, I'm the same I don't like Robyn spelling, I would want it like the bird x

Edenember · 29/04/2021 10:57

@Bouch I’m with you in preferring the Robin spelling, I don’t see the sense in changing one letter in a name that’s also a word that everyone knows.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 29/04/2021 10:59

Just as confusing, but what about Rowan?

Rowan is really popular right now.
