Do these names have negative connotations?

We are really stuck for a boy's name for our little one who is due mis-July (we've decided on Phoebe Margot if it's a girl).

Keen on the names below but worried each might have a negative connotation, so please help! Do you like the below and am I over-thinking each name?

Rex (does this make you think of a dog?)
Rufus (is this too posh-sounding?)
Casper (does this make you think of the friendly ghost?)
Casper (is this too pretentious?)

Any other ideas gratefully received Smile

@Constantcrayfish that's a very good point - I'm worried about teasing because when I grew up in the nineties names were, generally, pretty traditional but when I think about it there are lots of out there names at my daughter's nursery.

Phoebe Margot is great

Rufus I like and is quite popular so it can’t make everyone think of dogs. I personally prefer Cassian to Cassius but both nice. I’m not mad on Casper or Jasper but again they are getting popular so nothing odd about em.

Other thoughts - Caspian, Rafe, Lucas, Linus, Jonas, Kester, Jerome

Rex I would avoid - it’s being used but I think it falls in with Jaxon, Dexter - will be overused and downmarket very quickly as Ryan and Tyler type names are.

bdd2017 · 26/04/2021 11:07

I love them all! But Casper is my fave, it was on our list. They're fabulous names.

Chewbecca · 26/04/2021 11:11

Laurence, I am sure that's the name for you.

If not, he's called Hugh, Sebastian or Dominic.

Graymare · 26/04/2021 11:23

Not keen on Rex.
Love Rufus, Casper is OK.

Have you considered Cassian rather than Cassius?

LostInTime · 26/04/2021 11:33

If you like Cassius (pr. cashus) what about Lucian (pr. loo-shan)?
I like the suggestion of Jerome- that is seriously underused IMO.

Chersfrozenface · 26/04/2021 11:37

Another vote for Marcus, Laurence or Kester.

Names from Latin and Greek - how about Julian? Has anyone suggested Phillip?

TatianaBis · 26/04/2021 11:41

Love Phoebe Margot btw.

itsgettingwierd · 26/04/2021 11:43

Love Phoebe - it was one of my girls names!

Your boys names aren't awful but not in my taste and can see others reasons why not to use them.

How about

Dexter
Sebastian
Dominic
Caleb
Issac

Whereismymojo · 26/04/2021 11:44

What about Rupert? I love Rupe for short.

I have two friends with a Caspar/Casper each. I was gobsmacked initially as yes, I thought of the friendly ghost. But now it’s quite normal, and I like it Smile

Cassius - that is a mega armed crack hit the big guns type of name. Cassius! Something very great about it. Will it end up being Caz?

Crunchymum · 26/04/2021 11:44

I know a Rufus (suits him) but Rex is a dogs name to me.

I prefer Cassian to Casper / Cassius.

cobblers123 · 26/04/2021 11:49

My cat is Rufus, also called Roofie or as one friend refers to him, Roofie baby! Grin

zigaziga · 26/04/2021 12:17

I love Rex, Rufus and Casper. My absolute favourite is Rufus.

WeeGobshiteBentBastard · 26/04/2021 12:19

Haven't RTFT but you do know it was Cassius (among others) who stabbed Caesar in the back don't you? literally? (literally stabbed him to death I mean). So yeah, a bit negative...Grin

Bionicname · 26/04/2021 12:42

Julian
Nicholas
Robert
Anthony
Lucius
Luke
Maximilian (Max)
Fabian

DotsandCo · 26/04/2021 17:53

Alasdair is lovely...or Alistair if you prefer a more modern spelling?

Whereismymojo · 26/04/2021 20:16

And, a positive, for balance - Cassius Clay... aka The Greatest aka Mohammad Ali!
Cbd333 · 26/04/2021 20:52

@WeeGobshiteBentBastard this made me laugh! My daughter is named after a Roman goddess who wasn't completely sweetness and light but Cassius supersedes her! I'll go with the Cassius Clay angle instead @Whereismymojo Smile

We're now thinking Maxim or Maximilian, classical, not too rare, not that commonly-heard and I love Max as an abbreviation. I really love Jasper from the name suggestions too though

Hector
Dexter
Tobias

Paris
Alastair

I often see Maxim suggested on here, but for me I only ever think of the men’s magazine and being at school with all the boys acting like it was x-rated porn. Sorry, but you did ask for negative associations! Although I’m always surprised no one else ever mentions it - maybe my school was very different to others!
Cbd333 · 26/04/2021 21:25

@Myneighboursnorlax omg I had totally forgotten about that! My brother used to have copies of Maxim and yes, he definitely thought he was really cool and adult for buying it 😂

I live the name Rufus. A friend's sister has one nn Roo. I laughed at Jasper being suggested as that's our dog's name!

user1493494961 · 26/04/2021 22:53

I don't like Rex but do like your other choices.

Cbd333 · 26/04/2021 23:01

@Tillygetsit I clearly have a thing for dog names - maybe I should just go for Rover 🙈
