Your pronunciation guide is a bit bizarre.

Dahlia can be Dale-ya or Dahl-ya. I doubt anyone else would use a short a.

Blythe makes me think of Blyth, which isn't great.

KirstenBlest · 25/04/2021 19:53

Rating wise, a 4. It's not awful but Delia is nicer. Blythe as a middle name is a bit of a 1-syllable filler name but at least it's not Rose, May, Grace or Joy.

The combination seems slightly try-hard but Dahlia Surname might be ok.

8dpwoah · 25/04/2021 19:54

Nice enough name but YABU for being patronising. Maybe pick something more mainstream if you're going to bring your DD to be the same, people won't be expecting it as much as they would from a more 'unusual' name such as your choice.

partyatthepalace · 25/04/2021 19:54

It’s a long a - Daah-li-a as far as I have ever heard it - if you want a short a you might get a lot of mispronunciations.

Dahlia is ok. I like Blythe better. I don’t think the combo works - maybe it’s the 2 long first syllables together.

CliffsofMohair · 25/04/2021 19:54

I hear Blythe I think Gilbert. I like Dahlia Blythe though.

TatianaBis · 25/04/2021 19:55
  1. If you want a as in bat you need Dallia.
  1. Blythe is much nicer name, so I’d have it the first name.
wanderedlonelyasacloud · 25/04/2021 19:56

I like the name dahlia but have only heard it pronounced as day-lee-ah or daah-lee-ah depending on whether the person is english or American

PolarnOPirate · 25/04/2021 19:56

There is no way I’d go for the pronunciation you specified there on my first try, I would be a toss up between

Dah-lia
and
Day-lia

For me. I would definitely have to be told it’s Dalya.

But I would only need to be told once, it’s not hard.

I love Blythe and it would probably be our daughter’s middle name.

I like Dah-lia but pronunciation issues would put me off.

Marcipex · 25/04/2021 19:57

I think it’s lovely but don’t understand your pronunciation guide.
I like Day leeya and Dar leeya but I would expect 3 syllables, not 2.

NannyR · 25/04/2021 19:59

It's ok - I thought it was pronounced with three syllables day-li-a, rather than two, dal-ya.

PolarnOPirate · 25/04/2021 20:00

As to what sort of gal I picture... dark haired skipping around school playground in a summer dress, is what sprang to mind 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheWaif · 25/04/2021 20:00

I like the name Dahlia, which is pronounced dah-lee-a. I'm not sure what your pronunciation is about and agree you've made it a lot more patronising than was necessary.

TheWaif · 25/04/2021 20:01

I do kind of link it in my mind to the black dahlia murders though.

PolarnOPirate · 25/04/2021 20:01

Ps why is there an H in it if it’s pronounced Dalya?

UnprecedentedPoster · 25/04/2021 20:05

Dahlia pronounced your way would make me think procrastinating. Like "stop dallying about, you dilly dallyer". Or dallying in someone else's business.

Dahlia pronounced day-lee-uh, or dar-lee-uh is a lovely name though :) but you will find yourself always having to clarify which pronunciation.

I cannot even begin to imagine how else anyone might pronounce Blythe..! But it's also a good name. Different vibe to Dahlia, but not necessarily bad to mix it up :)

DramaAlpaca · 25/04/2021 20:05

I know how both names are pronounced, thanks. Dahlia is not pronounced the convoluted way you are trying to suggest it is. To get your pronunciation I suggest you drop the 'h', or spell it with two 'l's.

I don't like Dahlia much as a name, and I strongly dislike Blythe.

megletthesecond · 25/04/2021 20:06

They'll have a lifetime of people pronouncing it "wrong".
Big no.

annaboo2 · 25/04/2021 20:14

Are you American? I’ve heard both pronunciations but the one you prefer is the more common pronunciation in the United States. I prefer that pronunciation but if you are in the UK you may want to spell it differently so there is no confusion. I think the combination of Dahlia and Blythe is lovely!

Borris · 25/04/2021 20:15

Sounds like dally-er.

Day-lia is nicer but I think there are prettier flower names out there. Don't like Blythe at all. Sorry

ladygindiva · 25/04/2021 20:15

I like it, esp if pronounced Dale ee a. Its nice.

minipie · 25/04/2021 20:17

So like Dally-er? To my mind that’s a mispronunciation and the correct pronunciation is Dar-lee-er or Day-lee-er.

Blythe I love.

Tavannach · 25/04/2021 20:19

Blythe is lovely, Dahlia not so much. (Your pronunciation of it is the only one I’ve ever heard.)

YesPleaseMary · 25/04/2021 20:20

It’s all a bit Anne of Green Gables...

Talissa · 25/04/2021 20:30

I only the copied the pronunciation from behindthename.

But yeah I pronounce the name like dah-lee-ah and not day-lee-ah (which I believe is the british pronunciation). dar-lee-ah... that I don't understand when the name doesn't even have an r in it.

PolarnOPirate · 25/04/2021 20:32

So no ‘a as in bat, cat’ then?
