Aurelius?

For a boy?
I like the meaning, that it is uncommon in the UK, that you can make lots of nicknames out of it.
Possible downsides- too posh/weird/will never find an accompanying sibling name? (Were thinking Emmeline for a girl)

I think that you need to avoid anything that sounds anything like “oral”. Kids- and adults- are mean.

Whinge · 24/04/2021 20:22

Dumbledore.

I'd assume you were a Harry Potter fan. It's also not a great sounding name, as the PP said above, Oral.

Lass23 · 24/04/2021 20:24

@whinge

It’s Albus Dumbledore

Nope Aurelius Dumbledore is from the new Fantastic beast films, the main character. It's quite a big plot point. The name is pretty unusual so the association with the character is more prominant, as opposed to a name like Harry.

VenusClapTrap · 24/04/2021 20:42

Too long and a touch pretentious.

HavelockVetinari · 24/04/2021 20:45

It's a beautiful name but will (sadly) get shortened to something daft like 'oral' in secondary school.

It's a shame, it's such a fab name otherwise.

It might depend on the school you plan to send him to though - if it's an expensive public school like Harrow, Rugby etc. it might be OK.

FizzyApricot · 24/04/2021 20:55

Depends what circles you move in

partyatthepalace · 24/04/2021 21:28

I think it’s fine myself - I think the oral refs are stretching it. I know an (admittedly Italian American) Aurelio.

If it does put you off then Augustus, Cornelius, Cassius, Julius are all alternatives

TaraR2020 · 24/04/2021 21:52

I like it, I don't think it sounds like 'oral' either although I suppose it would depend on the accent

idontlikealdi · 24/04/2021 21:54

I know someone with it as a middle name, they always refer to him as xxx Aurelius. We take the kids out of the parents for it all the time.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 24/04/2021 22:01

Its terrible. Just no.

Ellmau · 24/04/2021 22:26

It's an amazing name, if you're brave enough.

CooperLooper · 24/04/2021 22:28

Reminds me of the old guy in the Gladiator film

CharlieChickenson · 24/04/2021 22:31

@Ellmau it's not about if the parents are brave enough, is the kid?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/04/2021 03:25

Gorgeous but brave. I think we tend to be more conservative with boys names than girls in the UK - so Aurelia on a girl wouldn't raise as many eyebrows as Aurelius would on a boy. I think Elle Macpheron has a son named Aurelius though? So maybe more people (other than celebs) should be brave - I suppose he can always be Ray or Lee if he hates it/is more shy.

Emmeline is lovely - reminds more of the Suffagette and works fine with Aurelius. I think any multi -syllable, less common name would pair well, although I'd probably think more Greek or Roman like Octavia, Cassia, Ianthe, Persephone etc or Shakespearean - Nerissa, Perdita etc

Violetlavenders · 25/04/2021 08:15

Aurelius is a great name!

I also like Aurelia for a girl.

Thefaceofboe · 25/04/2021 11:25

I prefer Aurelian.

StevieNix · 25/04/2021 11:33

Aurelius dumbledore!

MaidofKent78 · 25/04/2021 11:39

Too long; it's a bit of a mouthful though I like it. If you want a connection to it, you could use Marcus...

JemimaJoy · 25/04/2021 11:42

I like it but I can't imagine any of the inevitable shortenings which would worry me!

PassMeTheWotsits · 25/04/2021 20:09

Makes me think of areola 😦

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/04/2021 20:55

Actually I agree the pp who suggested Aurelian instead. While I love Aurelius, it clearly has the classical Roman ending that some people think is "posh/out there" . Boys names ending in an "n" are much more popular/commonplace so Aurelian might not sound quite as unusual (ala Sebastian, Maximilian etc).

Thedogscollar · 27/04/2021 01:11

No it's awful. Far too much of a mouthful.

Blaaaaaaaaah · 27/04/2021 01:20

I like Aurelius although interestingly we definitely do go more conservative in name choices for boys.

My daughter is Aurelia and the oral thing has never come up as that’s not how it’s said. It’s much more an U sound than an Or

nameisnotimportant · 27/04/2021 01:29

God I thought it was awful for a girl but then you said it's for a boy. It's one of the worst boys names I've ever heard. He will constantly get jokes about oral
