Thoughts on Jim?

Not a fan of James but really like Jim/Jimmy. Also don't really like giving a nickname as a first name but I really prefer Jim to James but I'm thinking Jimmy might be a bit more difficult to carry off as an adult. Any opinions welcome!

I quite like it.

BikeRunSki · 23/04/2021 11:31

I know a couple of adult Jimmies, but both are formally James.

BikeRunSki · 23/04/2021 11:33

Sorry, posted too soon

I do like Jim/Jimmy as an everyday nickname , but I think that these are so well known as diminutives of James, there will always be an assumption that this is the case.

FindBetty · 23/04/2021 11:34

Jim is a great name! I know a retired Jim, and a mid-30s one, and a 20 something and they all suit it.

rolloverrosie · 23/04/2021 11:36

Love it but would use James officially. And never call him that! Nobody ever judges Alexander/Alex for being given a longer name and the short version used

Mrs Dale's Diary for those with long enough memories.

Woodlandbelle · 23/04/2021 11:38

I really love James and Jim does sound 'older' but it could be lovely on a younger boy.

partyatthepalace · 23/04/2021 12:19

I like it, but I would put James on the birth cert, as it’s very nick namey - you don’t have to use it, but it gives him options

Ellasmummyx1 · 23/04/2021 12:40

I like it but I’d definitely put James on the BC

Ameanstreakamilewide · 23/04/2021 12:43

Mrs Dale's Diary for those with long enough memories.
She was always fretting about poor old Jim, bless her.
wildthingsinthenight · 23/04/2021 12:44

Like both but love Jimmy

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 23/04/2021 12:45

Love Jim, but agree with PPs - put James on the birth certificate, so he has got both options when older.

LizzieMacQueen · 23/04/2021 13:23

I reckon if you use Jimmy (which i love with the -ie too) folk will miss hear you and think your LO is called Jamie.

Whereabouts in the UK are you?

Ladymouse · 23/04/2021 14:07

I have a Jimmy he's Jimmy on his Birth Cert too.

imalmostthere · 23/04/2021 14:08

Shalom

ladygindiva · 23/04/2021 14:11

Love it. I know a youngish Jimmy who is James and a friends Ds is Jimi, after hendrix I guess. Personally I would use James and abbreviate, but I think just Jimmy / Jimi is OK.

noscoobydoodle · 23/04/2021 14:15

My 6 year old has a Jimmy in her class (not a nickname for James) and my 8 year old has a jim in her class (but he is a James). I like bothSmile

TatianaBis · 23/04/2021 14:31

I would call him James personally in case he doesn’t like Jim as much as you. Then he’s got many options - Jim/Jimmy/Jamie.

Poppie363 · 23/04/2021 14:33

I would go with James or Jim over Jimmy, Jimmy might make some think of Jimmy Savile

BilboBercow · 23/04/2021 14:37

Go with jim/Jimmy as a nickname and give them the formal James. Can't picture a baby Jim tbh

Deftly · 23/04/2021 16:01

Thanks for all the replies. Didn't think of the Jimmy Saville association so thanks to those who pointed it out. My husband has also vetoed Jimmy and James so I guess it's back to the drawing board!
