How popular is Ruby? I’m in Bristol and know 4 under 3, but my mum who lives at the other side of the country doesn’t know any young Ruby’s, only someone her age.

Popularity wouldn’t put me off, I’m just curious as it’s recently been added to our list Smile

We also like Penny, so any other ideas we might like would be appreciated Smile

I love Ruby and I don't know a single one (East mids here).

17caterpillars1mouse · 22/04/2021 09:39

I do know two Penelope's nn Penny though. Tbh I much prefer Ruby

thenonsensepotter · 22/04/2021 09:54

I have a Ruby and I think it's beautiful Smile

LesLavandes · 22/04/2021 10:01

Lovely name

AuntieStella · 22/04/2021 10:27

Ruby was very frequently used about 10- 15 years ago (top 10)

I'm afraid I tend to think curry!

I like Penny/Penelope and it hasn't been that popular and definitely not of generation

FizzyApricot · 22/04/2021 11:07

Also in Bristol and know 2 under 5. (Maybe the same ones though haha!)

TatianaBis · 22/04/2021 14:29

It’s still popular in London.

Personally I think it’s tawdry.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/04/2021 14:57

I struggle to get past the old lady connotations for Ruby (maybe because I have only met a few little ones - probably a good thing from your perspective OP!). But if you love old fashioned names then Audrey has a cool vibe to me (probably because of Hepburn and Twin Peaks).

If you like "ee" ending names - I personally prefer the French sounding ones (for some reason they seem a little bit less "cutesy" to me) so Sophie, Sylvie, Rosalie, Amelie, Coralie, Elodie, Cecily etc .

I also like some of the Greek ones (but Penny is a bit too nn for me personally) - Xanthe, Ianthe, Selene are nice.

honestly it makes me think of Audrey from coronation street Grin but I admit it’s a lovely name. I do like older names I suppose. I love Violet but my partner isn’t keen.

I’ve always loved the name Ruby! I only knew of one where I stay though but my friend had a baby last week and called her Ruby 😊 I think rather than going by the popularity charts you just have to base it on how many you know very close to you. I am going with a top 10 name for our little boy and I originally wanted something unusual but it’s not a name that anyone close to us or in our town have

Roselilly36 · 22/04/2021 16:46

I know a Ruby who is a lovely, sweet little girl. So when I hear that name I think of her, so a yes from me.

Spied · 22/04/2021 16:47

NE here. The ones I know of are aged 10-15

Yes definitely! Tbh if we like the name enough we will go with it regardless of popularity but I’m just curious at the moment Smile

@sarah13xx I agree with this! The charts are good as a guide but that’s all they are really.

For under 5s I’d say there are far more Penelopes that Ruby’s (I know of 3!). It’s the new Florence IMO, lovely but probably not as unique as parents think it is when they name their child. At least you know Ruby is a little popular so it wont be a surprise. It honestly wouldn’t bother me. Ruby is such a lovely name.

Thefaceofboe · 22/04/2021 18:25

@mamablondie33 see I don’t know any little Penelopes or Pennys, so it really does depend on the area! I agree about popularity, I’d hate to pick a more unusual name and it become really popular.

We also love Genevieve but I can’t imagine a baby Genevieve so that’s been put down on the list atm.

@Thefaceofboe I think ultimately it’s more important that the name is unique to your family and area (as someone else has said).

Off the top of my head the names I hear a lot for girls under 5 right now would be Daisy, Isla, Olivia, Florence and Evie. And on the rise - Beatrice, Penelope, Mabel and Delilah.
These are the kind of names I mean when I say people think they’re unique and they’re not really (nicest way possible, I love them but if you’re bothered about popularity then go for something out of the top 100).

FedNlanders · 22/04/2021 19:49

My Ruby is late teens now. I still LOVE it. The favourite name out of all mine lol

IdblowJonSnow · 22/04/2021 20:02

I like Ruby and Penny.
Does one go with your surname more than the other?

SirVixofVixHall · 22/04/2021 20:03

I only know one Ruby, she is in her thirties.
Audrey is suggested on here all the time so will be v popular. Ruby is nicer.

Thefaceofboe · 22/04/2021 20:05

Does one go with your surname more than the other?

Surname begins with B and 2 syllables but both sound nice in my opinion. It’s quite a standard surname, most names go with it.
