Rory?

We have settled on this name for our future son. We almost went ahead with Ruairidh but eventually decided not to (even though I secretly wish we were using it)

However, we can't come up with any middles. We don't want to do the usual James or anything else that sounds like a filler middle name. I feel Rory is a difficult first to pair up with other names so looking for suggestions!

Why not do Ruaridiah with Rory as the nickname? Could totally work. Ruaridiah has much more middle name options too.

Either way, Rory is, imo, the quintessential modern British boy name. Go for it.

ScabbyHorse · 17/04/2021 16:34

I love Rory. How about Rory George?

Flymetothestars · 17/04/2021 17:12

Rory increasingly popular and trendy. Also- Loads of Ro ... names increasingly very popular at the moment so I think a good idea to pick a more unusual middle name

Rory Tristan
Rory Laurence
Rory Winston
Rory Eric

Rory Séamus
Rory Daniel
Rory Gabriel
Rory Aidan
Rory Michael

Creepygnocchi Because spelling is going to be a nightmare for him. Just as an example, it was written on my post yet your comment has it misspelled twice 😂

No middle name suggestions really, unless you have anyone in the family you could name him after?
Just wanted to say I love the name Rory ❤️ If I hadn’t already called my cat it a few years ago it would probably be my little boys name

Drunkenmonkey · 17/04/2021 20:15

Ruairi is a legit spelling, much easier than Ruairidh and also has the lovely pronunciation Rure-y which I think is gorgeous.
I usually use family names as middle names but I think most names go with Rory.

Banville · 17/04/2021 20:17

I prefer the spelling and pronunication of Rory compared to Irish or Scottish versions. I sometimes work with a Ruairidh and it feels weird to me saying roo-a-ree, as though I'm putting on an accent. Rory sounds more solid to my ear.

Banville · 17/04/2021 20:18

sorry that should be 'pronunciation'

OloBo · 17/04/2021 20:38

It’s just a lovely name in all of its forms!

In my experience, the English, Scottish and Irish versions tend to just get pronounced the way the person saying it would in their country. Spelling would be a strong consideration for me if you’re in England.

James is one of my favourite names, so I think it would have been a lovely combo.

Rory Benedict
Rory Tobias
Rory William
Rory Fraser
Rory Douglas
Rory Wilfred

I like pop’s suggestion of Gabriel

Tillygetsit · 17/04/2021 22:58

Rory Daniel
Joseph
Peter
Benjamin
Douglas

Even though the Irish spelling is much easier, since aren't Irish at all so to be honest I wouldn't be too comfortable using it. We are full English so I wouldn't want to appropriate a name from the Irish. I still go back and forth between Ruairidh and Rory but I think it will be Rory in the end.

Thank you for the suggestions, Rory Fraser is so far our favourite xx

Fair point 😂

Rory Alexander
Rory Theodore
Rory Benedict

Feels like it needs something weighty to balance it. I love Rory but you know it’s very very popular now?! I would deffo go for the anglicised spelling or twill be a nightmare for him..

freedomfinallyy · 18/04/2021 15:24

Yes we do know it's super trendy at the moment but I should've mentioned we don't plan on living in the UK for much longer as husband has a job offer to move abroad (English speaking country) so Rory should still be alright.

Ruairi was going to be our DC2 name - Scottish with a dyslexic DH who couldn't wrap his head around the "dh" on the end - unless you use the name to push a stereotype I really don't think it counts as cultural appropriation and none of my Irish friends batted an eyelid at the idea 🤷‍♀️

With Rory I'd probably go with Alexander, Nathaniel or Jacob.

AnyaMoondial · 18/04/2021 16:19

Rory Edward
Rory Theodore
Rory Lachlan

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/04/2021 19:37

Even though you are moving abroad, since Rory is quite popular/trendy at the moment I'd be tempted to give him a very classic sounding middle name which is well used internationally. Alexander would be great or Thomas too. Perhaps Max(imilian), Sebastian, Adam, Samuel or Gabriel if you want something slightly less popular at he moment (in the UK).

finallychangedmyusername · 18/04/2021 22:36

Rory Andrew
Rory Thomas
Rory Edward
Rory Oscar
Rory Isaac
Rory Lewis
Rory Jonathan
Rory Joseph
Rory William
Rory Elliot
Rory Oliver
Rory Alexander
Rory Alistair
Rory Harrison

ILoveStickers · 19/04/2021 06:58

I think the worry about it being trendy/popular are a little exaggerated if I'm honest. It's gone from the bottom of the top 100 (#93) to the bottom of the top 50 (#46) over the past 25 years - hardly the most popular name out there.

It's on a big upward swing, it's true, so it may go higher. There are also lots of other popular R names on an upswing, like Rowan and Roman. But Rory is hardly like Arlo or something, which went from completely unranked to #34 in 25 years!

Roselilly36 · 19/04/2021 07:04

I love the name Rory, a great choice, we choose first names for our DS’ but their middle names are family names, DS1 middle name is DH, DS2 Grandads name. I like the family connection.

Zzpplant · 19/04/2021 07:20

I love Rory - both the name and the simple spelling.

Rory Arthur
Rory Alexander
Rory Christopher
Rory Thomas
Rory Adrian
Rory Alistair
Rory Alban
Rory Michael
Rory maxwell

I honestly dont know many irish people who would accuse you of appropriation for giving your child an irish name. So many people have Sean's and eoins who havent an ounce of irish blood. Ruairi is the english version anyway but would have a different pronunciation to rory. If you love it, go for it.
Drunkenmonkey · 19/04/2021 08:54

I agree with Ilovestickers. I don't think Rory is 'trendy'. It has always been used as a name and I know plenty of all ages. It has recently become more popular but isn't even in the top 30. It won't date because it isn't fitting with a current fad (old man cute names for example). I think it's a solid choice.

Edenember · 19/04/2021 10:04

Rosy Alasdair was the first thing to come to mind.
