Clemence and Clemency

What ar your thoughts on these names (both on girls)? Do you know any?

I used to know a "clem"
Was surprised to find out it was short for clemency
She would be about 50 now, I think.
Lovely lady, successful business woman.
Polite and funny.

I know a Clem(entine), in her 30s now. Always thought it was a cool name, but she was cool. Taking her out of it, the names are a bit twee and overly sweet for me personally. Haven't met any little ones.

Isn't clemency is what they use in the American justice system when they need to be more lenient to death row prisoners?

That’s the first thing I though of on seeing both of those names, so for that reason it would have to be a huge no.

Yes, a v nice, clever French Clémence. I also know an English Clementine but I think the name's a bit long, and she always goes by Clem(mie). Both in their mid-20s.

I know a Clemency and a couple of Clementines. I like the full names (and Clemence too) but I’m not a huge fan of “Clem” as a nickname.

I know a Clemence (Clem). she's 4. I really like it, I think it's a timeless, strong name.

I like Clementine and Clemency, also Clement for a boy.
I don't like Clemence for a girl, it sounds too much like Clement and Clarence for me.

I know a British Clemency and a French Clémence.

Clemence works better in French. It’s sounds odd in English and is too close to Clement (boys name).

I know a clemency and a Clementine. One goes by Clem and the other by Clemmie or Clemsie. Beautiful names.

The meaning of Clemancy is just too odd, and Clemence, while lovely in French, just doesn’t work in English

I know a Clemency (Burton-Hill); Clemence Poesy is a french actress. It always reminds me of Clement though, which is a man's name!

Clemence is pretty and has a sophisticated French sound imo. Clemency is a bit more virtuous sounding to me for some reason, but I don't hate it.

But I agree with pp that I dislike Clem and I'm not sure what other nn there could be if she wants one - maybe CeCe at a push?

French speaker and I agree with PPs that Clémence is better in French than in English.

So Clementine would be my vote! (And I like the song!)

Not a huge fan of either in an English accent, they’re lovely french names - I like Clancy which is a similar vibe but much harder for others to mangle

Don’t understand the aversion to the meaning, I thought this was a straightforward virtue name?

Personally not keen, in my neck of the woods Clems is regional slang for balls so that’s all I can think of.
