What's your opinion?

What it puts me in mind of us is the unsavoury character in Lolita (Nabakov) the name is played around with and repeated - definitely a no and may be one of the reason it isn't overly popular?

Next generation not so familiar with Nabakov may think differently, but it is a rather infamous connection in my mind that I'd be thinking when introduced and nod internally uh... Hubert Humbert. not a good connection.

mackerella · 11/04/2021 21:56

But the character in Lolita is Humbert Humbert, isn't he, not Hubert?

ArtemisiaGentle · 11/04/2021 21:58

Herbert? No Herbie? Just a thought!

idontlikealdi · 11/04/2021 22:18

I have never ever seen Hughbert. Both are horrid but Hugh is lovely.

Marmaladeagain · 11/04/2021 22:18

Yes must be the wordplay I'm thinking of and what's sticking in my mind - over 30 years ago I read it - seems to have stuck in my mind as wordplay around the names and Hubert has always stuck with me as one of the wordplays - might dig out and look this week as to why I've always associated it - did also read the Enchantress so maybe the wordplay. Either way, it's a no of a name from me...for reasons mixed up..

cheesebubble · 11/04/2021 22:32

Clearly a no from everyone including us now.

I love Rupert and Hugo btw but it's a no from DH, I cannot call my child Hugh as I'm German and I cannot bear the way people would pronounce it over there.

I don't like Herbert, a herb to me is something I use for flavouring.

@mackerella - sorry to derail, just looked up and at the time I was reading lots about Nabakov and letters and unfinished work his son was presenting - was meant to be destroyed on in his death and potentially the Hubert character in unfinished "Laura" is Vladamir himself was being discussed. Rabbit hole gone down and makes sense why I associate Lolita with Hubert as Laura is potentially Lolita and Humbert is Hubert in unfinished work etc. very unpleasant and not something I could stomach reading any of nowadays for sure. But yes the connection is hubert nabakov for me.

Do you like Bertie? I like that, but not keen on Albert but would accept it to get to Bertie. Kate Bush has a son Bertie (I think) and sounds cute, I think.

cheesebubble · 11/04/2021 22:47

@Marmaladeagain I don't like shortened names unfortunately, if his name was Albert (which I love but again DH doesn't), and Bertie came naturally that's fine but I wouldn't put Bertie on his birth certificate - that's very personal though!

Same as Archie, Freddie, Tommy etc.

Marmaladeagain · 11/04/2021 22:51

No definitely not, I'm with you on that for sure. Wouldn't have Bertie on the birth certificate or any formal situations, but I would accept Albert (not mad on it) but would use Bertie in day to day. I do have an Albert (day to day ) Bertie and an Orla that never were to be.....(names I nearly had, I mean if I'd had more children.....). We stop having children one day, but the pondering of names never does Grin

Misbeehived · 11/04/2021 22:52

I know you’ve moved on but just wanted to add that as a fan of the Richmal Crompton books my strong association is Hubert Lane! So a strong no from me. Herbert would have been my suggestion but can see that doesn’t help either! Sorry!

ArtemisiaGentle · 11/04/2021 23:03

Have you considered any names popular in Germany that are similar to English ones like Lukas or Conrad (just googled a couple now!)?

Marmaladeagain · 11/04/2021 23:19

One more suggestion from me before bed - do you like Otto? German but easy for English - I like it myself along with Albert and nn Bertie.

May2021Mummy · 11/04/2021 23:24

I think Hubert is a super cute name

DoingItMyself · 11/04/2021 23:25

Humbert?

DoingItMyself · 11/04/2021 23:25

Herbert?

percheron67 · 11/04/2021 23:27

Hughbert looks very odd. Hubert is correct spelling but not attractive. My late father in law was once called Schubert in our local paper!

KirstenBlest · 12/04/2021 10:47

Pubert. Grin

Hugh is nice

KirstenBlest · 12/04/2021 10:49

Only use Huw if you are Welsh. It doesn't sound exactly like Hugh.

StillRunningUpThatHill · 12/04/2021 10:58

Hubert has connotations of being a wimp, which is very unfair on all the Huberts out there but still not something you want to saddle a baby with, I think.

What about Henry, Max, Oscar, Leon, Noah, Lucas, Felix or Jacob? I’m trying to think of names that work in English or German.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 12/04/2021 11:02

How about Hugo?

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 12/04/2021 11:04

My half German half American second cousin is called Lucas which I think is a great name!

Chunkymenrock · 12/04/2021 11:04

Neither but love Herbert.

Violetlavenders · 12/04/2021 11:08

I know German English families with boys named

Oskar
Quentin
Sebastian
Lukas
Darius

DuchenneParent · 12/04/2021 11:09

Yes to the Hubert spelling. Hugh or Hugo are better names to have to live with though IMO.
