Very religious sounding? We aren’t religious and I know next to nothing about the Bible but is Asher in the Bible? Would you assume we were religious? Joel is deffo the middle name.

I like Asher

garlictwist · 09/04/2021 21:05

I'd assume you were Jewish. Not that that matters but it is a very religious name.

NannyR · 09/04/2021 21:07

They do sound quite biblical when put together - Asher was one of Jacobs sons in the Joseph's coat story in Genesis and Joel was a prophet. However I would still use them if you really like them, you don't often use both names in day to day life and Asher is a great name.

Lostmyself86 · 09/04/2021 21:09

It is religious sounding but it's a lovely name

User57392985 · 09/04/2021 21:17

Mm. I also have a Joseph 😄 and a non-biblical other son. Maybe not then! Thanks

I’d probably assume you were Jewish too, the combo does come across as rather religious but how often do you actually use the full name? I’d go for it if you really like both names.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/04/2021 22:26

So many well known boys names are Biblical - they can be hard to avoid! No -one would question a Joseph and Samuel or an Adam and Thomas sibset, because they are all so popular. Asher and Joel are a bit less well used, but unless people either know their etymology or their Bible quite well, I don't think they would automatically assume you were very religious (plus 90% of people won't know Asher's middle name). Maybe if you had both a Jeremiah and Ezekiel for example it would be more obvious....

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 09/04/2021 23:47

Asher is a son of Jacob and one of the brothers of Joseph (he of the coat of many colours rather than Jesus’s stepfather). It is very popular and widely used in Jewish communities - even if they don’t know his exact story I think many people would recognise it as Hebrew. Great name.

User57392985 · 10/04/2021 07:27

I'm surprised I even had to ask now, as I child I LOVED Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat and have now been singing 'Joseph Jacob's favourite son!!!!!' all morning haha. Hmm. Good job dad isn't called Jacob.

Probably why I am liking Asher so much too, subconsciously!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 10/04/2021 08:14

It is certainly more usable than Zebulun or Naphtali Grin

Cowbells · 10/04/2021 08:17

I like it.

WeAreAllCompletelyFine · 10/04/2021 08:19

I think that's a really lovely combination. Love the nickname Ash, it's sort of soft and strong at the same time.

Ps read the Red Tent - such a good book!

User57392985 · 10/04/2021 08:32

Well yay, I'm glad people like the name combo. I will think about it. It's funny because although you're naming an individual, and as much as people like to deny it, name choice does say something about the parents - hipster, classic, whatever it may be. I don't mind people thinking we are jewish of course but people may assume so I guess!

I work with an Asher, I like the name in theory but find myself singing that 1997 Cornershop classic for hours after I have thought of him?

How about Ashton, he was the hero of The Far Pavillions.. (am I showing my age?)

EssentialHummus · 10/04/2021 08:43

I’d think you were Jewish/religious. The Hebrew meaning is lovely - blessed/fortunate.

WeAreAllCompletelyFine · 10/04/2021 08:43

I like Ashton too! We thought about that as a middle name for DS as it has a special meaning for us. Smile

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 10/04/2021 08:45

The Cornershop track is Brimful of Asha, as in the Hindi girls’ name. Of course unless you have a rhotic accent there’s no difference in pronunciation.

adviceseekingnamechanger · 10/04/2021 08:50

Love the name Asher, and it has a lovely meaning too

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 10/04/2021 08:55

Both lovely names. Middle name are barely used anyway.

ILoveStickers · 10/04/2021 09:04

I really like Asher, and I don't think it's too religious.

I often wonder how long you could keep naming children after Jacob's sons before anyone caught on...

Joseph
Benjamin
Dan
Asher
Naphtali - hang on...

Springfern · 10/04/2021 09:10

Ps read the Red Tent - such a good book!

Agree!

Op, I would 100percent assume you were Jewish

User57392985 · 10/04/2021 09:39

Really like Daniel as well but for some reason not too concerned about being biblical. Funny isn’t it! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ps will have to look for that book!

Justcashnosweets · 10/04/2021 09:46

I really like it. 😊

Justcashnosweets · 10/04/2021 09:47

And no, I wouldn't assume you are religious, but then neither am I, so I wouldn't necessarily get the religious connotations of the name.
