Found out this week we are having a baby girl in August Smile.

Please could you all tell me what you think of these names, and also if you think any are 'trendy' at the moment. Not bothered about choosing a consistently popular name but dont want one that will date badly (like mine Grin).

Thea
Anya
Clare
Georgina
Gabrielle
Olive

Thank you!

Love all apart from Clare (quite 80s)

simonthedog · 08/04/2021 16:19

I like Thea, Gabrielle and Olive but not the others

emmathedilemma · 08/04/2021 16:21

Thea - nice
Anya - nice
Clare - a bit dated, there were a lot around in the late 70's / early 80's but it's a sound name
Georgina - same as Clare
Gabrielle - don't like at all and dislike Gabby as a nn ever more
Olive - nice

Carouselfish · 08/04/2021 16:22

OP, you have the opposite taste to me, so I'd say Gabrielle as it's the only one that doesn't make me think of someone who looks like Jenny Ryan.
I know Olive and Thea were popular recently.
Clare with an i is preferable.

KoalaOok · 08/04/2021 16:37

Thea is a bit "now" and Olive isn't very widely used but the others are nice.

Sall23 · 08/04/2021 16:45

Thea - quite trendy, but I like it. I'd go for Theodora, and have Thea or Dora as a nn
Anya - pretty
Clare - boring and 80s
Georgina - bit uppity / dated
Gabrielle - reminds me of the singer and dislike Gabby as nn
Olive - quite sweet - really like Liv as a standalone name

DotDotDotDotDot · 08/04/2021 16:58

Clare and Georgina are definitely not trendy if that’s your concern. Clara is nice though, somehow one letter makes all the difference. I like Anya best from your list, it seems short and sophisticated. I prefer Gabriella to Gabrielle, it might make a better middle name though as I also dislike Gabby and Ella/Ellie as nicknames.

GreenMeeple · 08/04/2021 17:27

Don't know about the others but Thea is my great aunts name, Anya is my aunt's name and Olive is the name of my friends mum. So personal I think these names are not going to age that badly.

Spied · 08/04/2021 17:31

I think Thea will date as it's becoming popular now.
I like both Georgina and Gabrielle ( slightly prefer Gabrielle)
Clare is awful and dated. I've also never met a nice one.
Olive is just not to my taste at all. Dislike it immensely.
Anya is lovely and my favourite.

TurkeyTrot · 08/04/2021 17:35

Olive is super trendy where I live - it's all the folk who like Olivia but wanted something a little bit different!
Pretty name though.

Flymetothestars · 08/04/2021 18:00

Love Anya

Flymetothestars · 08/04/2021 18:02

Anya has never got popular enough to date
A name has to get to a certain level of popularity before it's linked to a certain era

Sprockerdilerock · 08/04/2021 18:18

Ah gutted that Thea is 'now' as that is our front runner!

Olive was well used in the 1900's -40's - so is now very hipster trendy (it will likely date). I adore Claire but it was incredibly popular in the 70's/80's so is very associated with that period. Anya has never been very popular in the UK , so of all your choices is the least likely to date.

The others are more mixed - Thea has had a very rapid rise to the top 100 recently so will likely date and Gabrielle was top 100 for a while in the 90's. Georgina does feel more classic in that it has been popular from the 1940's to the 2000's (only left the top 100 about 15 years ago).

So based on what names I love, I'd choose Anya or Claire. Based on not wanting them to date - Anya or Georgina (or possibly Gabrielle - but not Claire, Olive or Thea)

Edenember · 09/04/2021 09:04

Thea seems to be rocketing up in popularity. I prefer the more unusual and imo prettier sounding Theia, which is on my list. Im not keen on Anya, at least spelt this way- just makes me think of Tanya without the T although it’s pretty sounding. Prefer the Anja spelling. Clare is very dated. Georgina I think of as a classic - very nice. Not keen on Gabrielle but like Gabriella / Gabriela. Olive is very cute but it’s current revival in the ‘old lady’ trend may see it date. So in summary my favourites from your list as the names stand are Georgina and Olive.

amallierory · 09/04/2021 09:22

Clare is very dated (70s/80s) and even Gabrielle feels a bit 90s to me. The only one I really see as "classic" is Georgina, though I'm not that keen on it.

I really, really, REALLY dislike Olive. I can't understand why it's even popular. It doesn't look pretty or have a nice sound, and it will definitely date.

So, that leaves us with Thea and Anya. Personally I'd go with Anya, as Thea isn't a full name, but I don't like Theodora. Anya is pretty and underused, and has a bit more of a classic feel to it. As a side note though, I think Thea and Anya would make great sibling names!

Good luck choosing! Smile

Sprockerdilerock · 09/04/2021 09:33

I also love the Anja spelling actually.

Finding this so difficult though! We had a boys name sorted from day 1, girls names seem much more daunting!

As much as we love Thea, we both have very 90s names ourselves and would rather not have something too 'faddy'. I feel daft saying that because I always swore I'd choose a name I loved regardless of what other people were doing!

Thea - dislike. Too many Theos.
Anya - ok but a bit wet sounding. Anna much nicer
Clare - dislike. Never met a nice one. Too 1970s
Georgina - like
Gabrielle - too 1970s
Olive - Olive Oil.

Pemba · 09/04/2021 11:21

I love Clare still (and prefer that spelling). Yes it was very popular in the 60s/70s/80s, but I think of it as timeless.

I also really like Georgina, such a nice sound. Quite like Anya (although I prefer Anna). Thea is fine, although you will get lots of people who pronounce it 'fear'.

I am sorry but I hate Olive! Olivia is nice, though.

OneKeyAtATime · 09/04/2021 11:36

I like all of tge names but:
Thea is very popular right now
I like Olive but there are so many Olivias around, it would put me off.

Like all your other names but my favourite is Anya.

CaffiSaliMali · 09/04/2021 14:31

All are fine but I really like Anya. Thea feels very 'now' as does Olive a bit - I know of a relatively newborn baby Olive.

Georgina and Gabrielle aren't to my taste but they're perfectly fine names. I prefer Gabriella to Gabrielle. Elle/Ella could be alternative nicknames to Gabby.

Clare just feels a bit dated now - very popular in the 70s and 80s, went to school with quite a few. It's still a nice name.

YoniAndGuy · 09/04/2021 16:26

I don't think Thea can really be said to be 'now'. It's never going to be THAT popular. Lovely name, best one of all.

Clare is coming back! - so beware - I've heard of a couple popping up.

Gabrielle and Georgina seem very 80s clunky to me.

Anya - Anna is miles better.

Olive is horrid - trendy at the moment, but utterly ugly - that one's going to fly straight back out of fashion just like last time!

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/04/2021 17:40

I don't think Thea can really be said to be 'now'. It's never going to be THAT popular.

It is very much 'now'. So many similar names are popular, Theo being one.

If you add Mia, Leah, Tia, Fiadh, Gia, Nia, Sia, Pia, and Zia they merge into one.

MissingLinker · 09/04/2021 17:52

Thea- Might date a bit but still a perfectly nice name.
Anya- Nice
Clare- Really like.
Georgina- Not bad, think Georgia is much nicer though.
Gabrielle- Nice in full, the diminutives aren't great, though.
Olive- Don't like at all.

I'd go Anya or Clare/Claire

YoniAndGuy · 09/04/2021 20:44

I don’t know any child called any one of those names!

Theo’s been popular for a decade, I know four. Never met a Thea!
