I really don't understand threads like these. We decided on a name because it's the only one could agree on for a boy, nobody else had any input and we told family and friends when he was born last night. No need to ask for other peoples opinions, it's a personal thing rather than "someone on MN doenst like it so I won't name her that"
riverrunner · 08/04/2021 15:20

I find them both rather stately and dignified.

BackforGood · 08/04/2021 15:27

I'm not that keen on either, but we live in a multi cultural society and it makes sense for everyone to use names from their own cultures when naming their dc.
To my English eyes I would agree with others that Olimpia looks strange - I think because we are all aware of Olympia / Olympics and it looks like it is the same word, but spelled 'wrong' to our eyes. Whereas Hera just looks like 'a name' Smile Plus 'limp' stands out as something you wouldn't want to name someone - again, I think this comes from us being used to the 'y' spelling.

@Grumpylate20s congratulations on your DS :)

People ask for different reasons, we had 2 boys names that we were stuck in a deadlock with so I asked on here to help decide which one we would go with. In the end we had a girl so it didn't matter but having opinions from others does help sometimes!

EvilOnion · 08/04/2021 15:34

OP it sounds like Olimpia is your main choice due to the family connection so I'd go with that.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 08/04/2021 15:36

Love both - slightly biased as I have a nearly 10yr old Olympia. In Greek Hera would be pronounced "ear-ra". I also have a Hebe, which we pronounce the the H even though it is "Evie" in Greek.

Lockdownbear · 08/04/2021 15:38

@Grumpylate20s
Sometimes it can be helpful for people who aren't sure to get other peoples non bias thoughts. A name is the biggest thing you will ever give your child. It's something that has to work from cradle to nursing home.

We all know children can be cruel and limp and it's negativity is something that would get picked up on. Olimpia, would be correcting spelling for the rest of their life.
It could also end up getting shortened to Oli or Oly.

I think I'd maybe keep it as a middle name but choose a different first name.

otterbaby · 08/04/2021 15:41

I think Hera is really lovely.

raskolnikova · 08/04/2021 15:41

I like Olympia

Milkshake7489 · 08/04/2021 15:42

I love both but would choose Olimpia based on your family connection Smile.

@onlyreadingneverposting8 Hebe is absolutely lovely too, great name choices!

ColonelPine · 08/04/2021 15:44

Definitely think Olympia is better than Olimpia if you’re in the U.K. I don’t mind Hera but wouldn’t know how to pronounce it.

Elouera · 08/04/2021 15:47

I agree with spelling it Olympia for all the listed reasons, or use as a middle name instead?

I have an Indian friend called Heral. Never heard of Hera though. Is it pronounced 'Hair-A'? Sorry, not keen as sounds unfinished and short and sharp and can imagine teasing about 'hair or hairy-a'.

nitsandwormsdodger · 08/04/2021 15:54

Don't like either
Olympia does rather put pressure on her to be Olympic and slim muscley

TaraR2020 · 08/04/2021 16:01

I love Hera.

Olimpia is also very nice and if you like it and want to use then go for it, no one else's business if they don't, it's not their child!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/04/2021 19:07

If Olimpia was your Mum's name, I think it would make a pretty middle name (I wouldn't do it for a first name as it will be always spelt as Olympia in the UK, and she might also possibly get jokes if she was very unsporty?).

I really like Hera but it is less well known here, so it's possible some people may mistakenly pronounce it as Herr -uh instead of Hear -uh.

Dietcokeaddiction · 08/04/2021 21:11

Hera is great. I would have thought most people would at least have come across it and know how to pronounce it.
I'm not a fan of Olympia because I've met two and they were awful - however, I'm sure there are lots of lovely ones!
Hera is more "wearable" day to day for me...

Grumpylate20s · 09/04/2021 06:42

Hmm you would rather have them as middle names. For our DS we went through so many names it's like one of the biggest desicions we'll make.
We first thought we were having a girl but as our Mothers are sadly not with us I wanted my DW mums name to be at the forefront but wanted it to be in the middle so as it was JULIA and mines was ANGELA we were quite happy it linked well...
As for first name we went to our gender scan and found its a boy so kind of put a spanner in the works, we didn't like JULIAN either.
We traulled through ALL the names. We were set on OSCAR and FINLEY, I wasn't keen but started using them on a daily basis but didn't tell anyone!
So I said I'm getting to like OSCAR but I'll let you choose the middle name as your the one whos pushing him out.. After my DW created a beautiful blanket and crocheted OSCAR on it I fell in love with it so we settled on OSCAR FINLEY HALL. I like to think that it all happened for a reason...

Anyway personally I'd go for a name like Mia it's like HERA but not hard to pronounce and not complicated like Olympia.. Good luck and enjoy the ride that is parenthood!

TatianaBis · 09/04/2021 12:50

I like both, I like ancient Greek names in general. But being a Londoner Olympia is Kensington Olympia. But if you're located in Greece it would be different.

So I'd go for Hera. Strong name, beautiful.

19thNamechange · 09/04/2021 12:53

Congratulations on your baby girl! I like both names, which doesn't help you much. I would pick whichever has the most personal meaning for you.
