I know a Zeyna (pronounced Zee-na) aged 11 and a Zenya (pronounced Zen-ya) aged about 8.

Warrior Princess.

It has a nice sound to it.

caringcarer · 07/04/2021 23:16

There was a girl a couple of years below me at my school called Xenia. I think it is a flower name.

SusannahSophia · 07/04/2021 23:21

Is it pronounced Zen ia or Zee nia?

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 07/04/2021 23:27

Zen ya

SusannahSophia · 07/04/2021 23:32

Thanks PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears, I’ve been pronouncing it wrongly for years, in that case!

Teapot13 · 08/04/2021 01:08

Well, the Russians say Ksenia. The Ukrainian version is Oksana, slightly less intimidating consonants!

EileenGC · 08/04/2021 07:12

Ksenia and Oksana have the exact same consonants! They’re not pronounced any differently in either name.

KoalaOok · 08/04/2021 07:34

Yes

riverrunner · 08/04/2021 07:40

Objectively it’s a nice name. Unfortunately it now reminds me of a regular poster on here with a singular lack of self-awareness, who manages to shoehorn references her own wealth, professional success and the fact that her children were privately educated from the moment the umbilical cord was clamped into threads about literally anything.

I knew an absolutely lovely Xenia. She was a londoner of Greek Cypriot origin.

She pronounced the X, "IxZenia" was how she would say her name.

She said it meant "kind to strangers."(Xenophobia means fear of strangers so I'd say kind to strangers is more accurate than "hospitality.")

SeanChailleach · 08/04/2021 09:46

Saint Xenia is very famous. It's kind of ordinary for very devout Catholics and very ordinary for Russians.

It does mean hospitality. It also means 'kind to strangers'. The practice of xenia in ancient Greece basically involves welcoming everyone the same. You should offer strangers in your house rest and refreshment before you ask who they are or what they have come for. It's allied with the worship of Zeus who often used to appear to humans in disguise - you never know who someone really is and so you should consider everyone worthy of your respect.

It's the same philosophy that informs the Bible verse 'Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.'

That's fascinating @ladycarlotta I love reading things like that, thank you Smile
