Would you choose Kit or Harris?

My final poll.. I think I’ve got there in the end and have eventually got my favourite two name options 🙌🏼
We live in Scotland so there’s a huge difference in popularity between the names. Harris was 6th last year and Kit was 372nd (although I know some will be registered as another name).
For years we presumed if our first baby was a boy he’d be Harris but had no idea it was anywhere near the top 10 because we don’t know any! It put us off slightly and I went looking for other names but never really found anything I loved 🙄 Kit is the only other one we’re considering now. So without mentioning the thing about how in England Harris is some sort of cockney rhyming slang 🤷🏼‍♀️ (which no one in Scotland has ever heard of 😂).. what would you go for? 😊 X

I much prefer Kit to Harris.

PandaFluff · 05/04/2021 19:21

If you've had Harris in mind for years I would use Harris.

Starryskiesinthesky · 05/04/2021 19:23

I am Scottish and much prefer Harris. Think there might be a north-south divide on this one!

Aquamarine1029 · 05/04/2021 19:24

Harris. Absolutely hate Kit.

BlowDryRat · 05/04/2021 19:24

Kit. I'm English though.

Level75 · 05/04/2021 19:25

Kit by far

HavelockVetinari · 05/04/2021 19:27

Kit 100%

You could use Harris as a middle name if you're set on it, so if you did change your mind whilst he's tiny you could switch.

DramaAlpaca · 05/04/2021 19:28

I think Harris.

I like Kit, but only as a diminutive of Christopher.

That’s what I’m thinking 😂 they are completely different names depending on where you live it seems

What about Kester Harris. Kit for short.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 05/04/2021 19:29

Kit is horrible. I have no idea why it's so popular on Mumsnet. Harris is much better.

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/04/2021 19:30

Kit. My favourite boys name.

Witchlight · 05/04/2021 19:30

Kit is also a diminutive of Kester (a Scottish form of Christopher)

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 05/04/2021 19:30

Love Kester MN. Kit

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 05/04/2021 19:30

Sigh. *nn

LittleBearPad · 05/04/2021 19:31

Kit is lovely. Harris isn’t.
English here as that seems to make a difference

ancientgran · 05/04/2021 19:33

I've only heard Kit as a diminutive of Christopher. Have you thought of Christopher known as Kit. I ask as one of mine has a name that would be very much like Christopher/Kit/Chris, we always used Chris they got to senior school and decided Kit was what they wanted to be called. We liked Chris they didn't so glad we gave them some choices.

Lockdownbear · 05/04/2021 19:37

Harris, I'm Scottish. I really wouldn't worry about how popular it is.

My eldest has a popular name (the baby in the next hospital bed had the same nameShock) but beyond that I've not actually came across another one the same age, in school or any clubs or anything.

Kit, sounds like an animal or Knight Rider's car.

If it was to be Kit my partner has said he’d be Kit on his birth certificate which I’d tend to agree with. It does limit the choices when he’s older, mainly when applying for a job but there are loads of three letter names these days that it really shouldn’t matter

I know, I think the official ‘popularity’ of names goes for nothing, its more important how many there are in your own town or in his year group at school. I’m a teacher so I’m very conscious of the school thing 🙈 but there are so many children at my school with a top 10 name yet there is only one of them in the class or even the whole school! I’ve decided to stop worrying about how popular it is and just base it on what we actually like

I prefer Kit, but if Harris has been the name in mind for years you may regret not using it, unless popularity is an absolute dealbreaker.

Bellabelloo · 05/04/2021 20:26

Kit! Star

ColonelPine · 05/04/2021 20:38

I prefer Kit but I’m English and have never come across anyone called Harris other than as a surname.

Raggeo · 05/04/2021 20:41

I love Harris, it's one of my favourite boy's names. I'm also Scottish. It does seem to be very popular just now, but depends how much you care about that sort of thing.
Kit seems to get mentioned a lot on MN, it's not my taste. I think of it as more a nickname.

MrsBungle · 05/04/2021 20:45

I’m Scottish (but lived in England 20 years). I prefer Harris. I find Kit a bit twee.
