Typically Boys Name for a Girl

Not expecting, just hypothetical (though I would 100% do this if DH approved it). What boys name do you love for a girl?

Mine is Claude.

OP posts:

I know females called Frankie, Billie, Danni, Rae and Sydney.
I also like Finn, Quinn and Scout for a girl.

Blacktothepink · 05/04/2021 19:43

And Robyn...lovely name.

Preservethewood · 05/04/2021 19:57

I love names that are neutral, androgynous. I don’t see them as masculine names used for a girl.

florascotia2 · 05/04/2021 20:02

Summa I suppose the name sounds quite nice, but the first Claude-as-a-girl was born to such a tragic mother and had such a short and unhappy life...

As a general point, I can never understand why anyone wants to be a princess. Most princesses - until modern obstetritics and the modern ability to choose husbands/partners - had utterly miserable and short lives. Indeed, royal chroniclers whispered that poor Queen Claude had been infected with syphilis by her husband. And, like so many princesses, she suffered from a pregnancy every year. (Royal babies were wet-nursed, which meant that a mother's fertility soon returned after birth.)

Not strictly relevant, but Queen Claude also gave her name to a type of greengage plum:

@LadyMonicaBaddingham

I met a lovely girl called Lawrence at music school about a million years ago. If I'd had a girl I might well have used it.
Could it have been Laurence? It is a girls’ name in France.

To answer your question, OP, none really. Once names shift from a predominantly masculine to feminine they don’t go back. See Lindsay, Hil(l)ary, Evelyn. I’m still mourning the loss of Aubrey.

@SummaLuvin

I also love Andy for a girl, but I hate Andrea and although I like Andromeda alot I think it's probably a bit pretentious, so couldn't use that one anyway.

I do like Claudia and wouldn't completely write it off, but something about Claude has a bit more about it - probably because it's a refreshing change from all the names ending in a, ia, and ie/y.

Love Andy. Ever since watching Dawson's Creek!

I know

Jamie
Ellis
Nicky
Max
Harry
Frankie
Hillary
Taylor

6 of them are female.
2 male.

3 aren't the BC name but nn used from birth.

I think all names are unisex although I will still use the phrase typical boys name. Because typical boys name just indicates the statistics of use. That's it.

MadeOfStarStuff · 05/04/2021 20:35

I hate the trend of naming girls boys names. It just sounds like the parents really wanted a boy or a desperate to appear cool.

AdelaideK · 05/04/2021 20:38

Although I agree with Mrs Terry Pratchett I do like the name Robyn for a girl.

I like Kelly for a boy.

BackforGood · 06/04/2021 00:20

None. I don't understand why you would do that to your own child.
What a pain in the backside to go through life with a name that EVERYONE comments on EVERY SINGLE. TIME you meet someone new, or have to give your name somewhere.
Why would you do that to anyone, let alone someone you live ? Confused

RhubarbFairy · 06/04/2021 00:37

@Survivingmy3yearold

Dylan, our 6 month old DD was very nearly a Dylan.
I know a Dylen who is a girl.

I also know a Frankie and a Stevie.

I went to school with a Jamie. She had the unfortunate surname of Dyke, which as you can imagine at secondary school was not used in its original definition. This didn't help with her having a 'boys name'.

There are loads of nicknames though.

Chris
Danni
Alex
Terri
Jo
Laurie
Sam
Nicki/Nic
Rae
Syd
Oli
Andi
Lou
Jack

When we were naming our DC one of my rules were no feminisations of boys names for girls - it would have felt like we'd really wanted a boy, not a girl. Giving your girl an actual boys name is an even worse message. Mind you I'm also not a fan of the ridiculously frilly girls names people on here appeal for these days...

oopsydaisyyy · 06/04/2021 00:55

danny

LadyWithLapdog · 06/04/2021 07:23

Morgan

AdriannaP · 06/04/2021 07:26

James
Frankie
Billie (love it)
Hilary
Bobby
Robin

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2021 08:34

@SummaLuvin, French people used to be limited to a list of names they could use.

I wouldn't but Billie, Bobbie and Stevie aren't too bad.

There are so many names to choose from, why use a boy's name? Claudine is so nice, use that.

itsgettingwierd · 06/04/2021 10:11

@AdelaideK

Although I agree with Mrs Terry Pratchett I do like the name Robyn for a girl.

I like Kelly for a boy.

Oh I forgot about those.

I know a female Robyn and a male Kelly.

Also know a male Morgan.

See this more common than thought. I don't think parents naming children with names statistically typical for the opposite sex is try hard at all.

Me and my siblings all have names that can be used unisexually. My sisters not as common, my brothers as the non version and mine is the one more typical for a male or as a nn to another male name.

And my parents definitely aren't out there or try hard! In fact as teachers they were mega aware of names Wink

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2021 13:26

Morgan is usually a boy's name

Cattenberg · 07/04/2021 23:59
@02Cattenberg

'I was disappointed to learn that Etienne is a boy’s name. I think it would make a beautiful name for a girl.'

Etain...lovely girl's name
@SionnachGlic, how do you pronounce Etain?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 08/04/2021 06:49

Étain is the French word for pewter or tin. I think as a name it is Irish?

JamMakingWannaBe · 08/04/2021 07:17

Tess Daly calls Claudia Winkleman "Claude" on SCD. Grates on me everytime.

golddustwomen · 08/04/2021 07:48

I have a Toni. Not Antonia or anything it's just Toni. Got some unwanted opinions when she was born but I love her name.

@stitchinguru so sorry for your loss Thanks I have an Ellis and I agree with your sons friend, it is the best name!

ILikeTheWineNotTheLabel · 08/04/2021 08:00

Morgan Le Fay is a powerful female figure in Arthurian and other British-Isles legends. Her name is said to derive from Welsh sea-goddesses and/or the Morrigan, a great war-goddess who features in many early Irish myths and legends.

Morgan as a male or female surname is a later usage.
