So I am curious, if you have a child whose full name is one syllable only, do you find yourself or others using nicknames that add syllables?! I know longer names always get shortened but I've also often noticed that sometimes one syllable just doesn't cut it and a name needs more!
Thoughts and experiences?

We use the one syllable name 99% of the time, but add a longer jokey version when playing

Ie Tim becoming Timomondo

vickyq1983 · 03/04/2021 18:28

We have a Zach... I like short names so they can't be shortened but the opposite has happened with us and we've now got a Zachy 🙄

My youngest has a one syllable name and had ie sound added to the end until around the time she went to school. She is either just her name now or a jokey unrelated name.

Awomanwalksintoabar · 03/04/2021 18:30

Mine has a one syllable name, so we just say it twice! E.g. Timtim

BikeRunSki · 03/04/2021 18:31

Sam
Sammy
SamuelaRockerfeller
Sammy Pea
Sambino
Samalam

I have a Rex and we call him Rexxy most of the time, or Rexxyroo, Rooboy, which has also evolved to RubyGrin

Livpool · 03/04/2021 18:51

I have a Jude and call his various nicknames based on Judy Blume

Doyouwantanothercuppa · 03/04/2021 18:54

We don’t give a nickname to DS1 (his friends shorten it) but we lengthen DS2’s name. Eg Mike=Mikey. So we gave up sticking to the 1 syllable theme for DC3.

I have a George. We usually call him G but also GG, GG baby, the G, Mr Baby, and so on. He’s an adult Blush

Mind you DCat’s one syllable name starts with D and he’s known as D, the D, the Ddkins and so on including The Baby

VenusClapTrap · 03/04/2021 18:57

Gus gets:
Gus Gus
Gussy
Gusto
Gusset
Gustav

NoGoodPunsLeft · 03/04/2021 18:57

This definitely happens, it's weird! Or surnames are used as a nickname either in their entirety or somehow adapted.

DD is a one syllable name and briefly had a Y added but luckily was only one child at her childminder's who she no longer sees because I hated it.

She has a few nicknames at home which aren't related to her name at all & don't get used by anyone else

Hoowhoowho · 03/04/2021 18:57

I have a Sagey, he’s 4 and thinks that is his actual name but he does answer to Sage in nursery.

@TigerDroveAgain I have a 3 year old George who is also GG and Mr Baby Grin or GG Baba.

I sometimes find myself calling him Geege (like Jeej) which is short for GG, I guess!

PolarnOPirate · 03/04/2021 18:59

‘Mr Baby’ 😂 that is so something I’d call my grown up kids haha.

My son has a 1 syllable name, often with a Y added by us, family and friends.

Helenluvsrob · 03/04/2021 18:59

Rose. Always rose. She said in nursery “ don’t call me Rosie it’s not my name “ and that was it 😂. Grown up now

DemiBourbon · 03/04/2021 19:03

@TigerDroveAgain ‘Mr Baby’ has made me lol Grin

cheapskatemum · 03/04/2021 19:05

3 out of 4 DSs have one syllable names. Only one never gets lengthened. Think of the surname of the last Labour PM to win by a landslide & try to lengthen it Confused

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/04/2021 19:05

My DD has a one syllable name, sticks to a one syllable name, and is very quick to correct anyone who tries to lengthen it.

We have nicknames for her, but they're related to her personality, not her name.

RickOShay · 03/04/2021 19:07

@VenusClapTrap
I have a Gus! I’ve never met another one. He is called Gussles, Gustopher, and Gussy Wussy

ChateauMargaux · 03/04/2021 19:08

We have a Cara who is Caramel, Carabella, Carabou and Caravan.. she's not too keen on Caravan!!

VenusClapTrap · 03/04/2021 19:08

Ours gets Gussy Wussy sometimes as well 😂

cptartapp · 03/04/2021 19:08

Luke was Lukey for the first year. But not really beyond that.

StringyPotatoes · 03/04/2021 19:10

All the children I know with one syllable names have longer nicknames but they tend to be family nicknames of jokey terms of endearment. They don't "stick" with friends etc in the same way that shortened versions of long names do (Michael becoming Mike for example).

My sister has a long name with a one syllable nickname but that nickname gets lengthened in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways that add in her middle names and all sorts. Something like Elizabeth being shortened and then lengthened into "Lizzy-Betty-Boop"

She obviously doesn't get called this anywhere outside of home where she is either "Elizabeth" or "Liz"

RickOShay · 03/04/2021 19:10

Is Gus his full name?
