Baby girl name - sister for Calliope

We have a 2 year old called Calliope (pronounced like Cal-Eye-O-P, think similar to how Penelope ends!) who goes by Callie most of the time. We fell in love with the name when I was pregnant with her and found out at 16 weeks I was having a girl and from then on she was Calliope. Really easy decision to make and we never queried our decision.

Pregnant again now with a second little girl and finding it SO much harder to find a name to go with it! Before we heard Calliope we quite liked Willow and DH thinks we should go with that for a girl but I’m not sure the two names go together very well.

I did a little Google and (I assume because of the Greek connection) Ophelia came up as an option. I absolutely love it, and think it would be a perfect sibling match and similar to Calliope has the option to shorten it. DH is not so sure and is worried it would be shortened to FiFi which makes him think of a dog (and I secretly love!).

My name is reasonably unusual. Not anything that would shock you but it’s unusual in that I’ve never met anyone else with the same spelling as mine, and I was the only one in school with this name but it’s definitely not super ‘out there’. DH has a consistently ‘top 100’ boys name and is worried it may look odd if we go with two quite unusual names (I mean it’s a bit late now for Calliope but oh well!).

If you heard Calliope and Ophelia, would it sound negative to you? Any alternative names you could suggest?

Phoebe
Persephone (Pip)
Cassandra
Helena
Felicity

CrunchyNutcase · 31/03/2021 13:47

I think Minerva goes quite well, and could shorten to Minnie

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 31/03/2021 13:48

I know Artemis was a goddess, but the name always sounds so masculine to mu ears

CatRamsey · 31/03/2021 13:49

I like Ophelia with Calliope. Willow does go I think, but it is obviously a lot more popular.

I think Juniper would be so cute with Calliope! Callie and Juno!

How about:
Delphine
Ariadne
Noelle
Evanthe
Phoenix
Florence
Giselle
Persephone
Octavia
Imogen

Ophelia just makes me think of paedophilia .

partyatthepalace · 31/03/2021 13:53

Calliope and Ophelia go really nicely, and Ophelia is being used a bit now, so I wouldn't worry about the weird puns mentioned above. Effie is sometimes the short form.

Not keen on Willow - it's a bit faddy and weak in comparison to Calliope.

Other thoughts in the mythological space - Artemis/Artemisia, Persephone, Cassia, Athena, Hermione, Hera, Hero, Circe, Juno, Althea, Diana, Selene, Ariadne, Clio

Other general thoughts - Rosario/Rosaria, Cordelia, Christabel, Isolde, Cecilia/Cecily, Fernanda, Adela, Serena, Ione

I think the same! To me it sounds like a boy's name.

Calliope and Ophelia are nice together. Seraphina?

Violetlavenders · 31/03/2021 14:11

Calliope and Ophelia go very well together.

NaughtyNell · 31/03/2021 14:19

Jocasta ?

LadyCatStark · 31/03/2021 14:50

Every other thread on here at the moment is about Ophelia, so you may find it’s not the unusual name you were hoping for. I like Persephone

TatianaBis · 31/03/2021 15:54

People only think Artemis is male because of Artemis Fowl.

I've always know she was a goddess so it sounds entirely feminine to me.

bridgetreilly · 31/03/2021 15:56

Jane
Helen
Sarah
Rachel
Sophie
Olivia
Emily

bridgetreilly · 31/03/2021 15:58

Iphegenia does NOT sound similar to Ophelia.

MenaiMna · 31/03/2021 16:44

You already have epic poetry If you want another muse Polyhymnia (sacred poetry) Pollie for short or
Thalia (muse of comedy) pr: Tall-ee-ah
If you want a Greek goddess Eirene (peace) pr: Ear-en-ee
A nice Welsh name which sounds similar is Eirian (silver) pr: Air-ee-ann

MenaiMna · 31/03/2021 16:46

Oh yes Effie short for Iphigenia is nice!

ColonelPine · 31/03/2021 16:58

Callie and Willow might too often become Callow and Willy.

I think your DH might be right that Callie and Ophelia might easily become Callie and Fifi. Or Callie and Ophy?

Fembot123 · 31/03/2021 17:08

Do people shorten Willow to Willy?

StrikingMatches · 31/03/2021 17:14

Persephone
Octavia
Xanthe
Cassiopeia
Lydia

florascotia2 · 31/03/2021 17:21

Prefer Artemisia to Artemis.
Amaryllis? Damaris? Agatha? Callisto? Berenike? Cassandra?

Does it have to be Greek? Because if not:
Proserpina, Augusta, Diana (as suggested by pp), Minerva (ditto) , Clementia, Honoria, Corinna, Cynthia
Ludivine, Corisande, Melisende, Rosamund
Morwenna, Ceridwen, Angharad, Eluned
Salome

Really don't like Ophelia. Re 'Hamlet' characters, Gertrude/Gertrudis is better.

ColonelPine · 31/03/2021 17:25

No! I just mean in a spooneristic way. Maybe it’s just me who always mixes names up!!

Amdone123 · 31/03/2021 17:37

Calliope is fab and, as a pp said, you need something equally fab. Orphelia , whilst nice, is too popular for me. There are loads. It's the new Ava.
I think Xanthe is perfect, as is Minerva and Artemis.
