As a first name? As a middle name? Honest as you like :)

I don’t like it .

bridgetreilly · 31/03/2021 17:46

I think it is possibly the most pretentious name you could pick.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 31/03/2021 18:10

Guinevere is an absolutely gorgeous name imo. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to use it as a first name because it's so associated with the legendary figure (unlike Arthur which is widely used), but I wish I was because Guinevere has a really romantic/poetic feeling, elegant sound to me. I also love that it has very different style nn's so she could pick what suits her - Gwen or Eve/Neve (pronounced with a short e).

HeadlessGummyBears · 31/03/2021 18:38

I love it! It’s up to you if you want it as a first or middle name. Do you have a family name you’d also like to add? That could help you decide in which order to have the names.

littlebillie · 31/03/2021 18:42

I love it, it was on our list but it is a "big" name, l think about a shy child wrestling with it and it put me off.

Cipot · 31/03/2021 18:48

I'm not that keen. I like Morwenna though

bellanotte22 · 31/03/2021 18:52

I know a Guinevere who goes by Guin, never Gwen.

It's a beautiful name. Suits a little girl and will grow really well as they get older.

Annietheacrobat · 31/03/2021 18:55

I immediately thought of the national lottery

AdoptedBumpkin · 31/03/2021 18:59

Not for a first name. It will stand out a mile in most schools.

FTMF30 · 31/03/2021 19:18

It sounds like the name an upper middle class, mature 40+ mother would call their child. Not a good nor bad thing.

I personally don't like it but I'm hardly ever aghast by name choices, unless it's something like Lucifer or Lolita, which I've seen seriously brought up on here.

Ninkanink · 31/03/2021 19:19

I like it a lot.

Violetlavenders · 31/03/2021 19:22

I don't think that Guinevere stands out at all among all the lovely interesting and multicultural names around these days. But more importantly, I'd rather stand out with a beautiful name than be one of many with a 'boring' top 10 name!

TatianaBis · 31/03/2021 19:25

Not in multicultural cities it wouldn't.
HundredMilesAnHour · 31/03/2021 19:25

Truly awful, sorry. I would snigger each time I heard the name and think poor kid/woman.

TatianaBis · 31/03/2021 19:26

Xpost - quite!

Violetlavenders · 31/03/2021 19:45

Are you serious? You feel the need to snigger each time you hear Guinevere? Shock Are you an adult?

Well, in that case I think that most people would feel sorry for you!

VenusClapTrap · 31/03/2021 20:46

It’s a beautiful name, but it would be a bit much to live with. It would also be shortened all the time, which kind of defeats the object of having a long pretty name.

Lauraloh · 31/03/2021 20:57

Thanks everyone! We love it but I'm not sure we're quite brave enough for a first name, so it would probably be a middle. I do love all the nicknames though. Genevieve is a nice alternative but not quite my style.

Curious whether those of you who said you don't like it or find it too much/pretentious would find it less so as a middle name?

I absolutely love it. It's the only name I genuinely like but think is too 'brave'.

Edenember · 31/03/2021 21:08

I like it. Go for it if you love it and like the nicknames.

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/03/2021 21:12

It’s not one I like personally mainly because I don’t like the nickname and all Guineveres become Gwens. On the other hand I really like Nimue and Morgan.

Pemba · 01/04/2021 15:36

Well it's unusual and has wonderful associations, but TBH I'm not sure I really like the sound it makes. I'd prefer Genevieve or Jennifer in real life (aren't they all variations?), they're prettier and more mellifluous. Guinevere is very literary and some people might find it a bit pretentious.

Would make a great middle name though.

TatianaBis · 01/04/2021 17:34

But not Arthur...

springblossom2 · 01/04/2021 17:38

Love it - great as a first name. I knew a Guinevere once - she was a doctor living in the same nurses' home as me for a while and such a lovely person. Intelligent and kind-hearted is what the name reminds me of. --- Very personal - but heyho - that's my opinion Grin

springblossom2 · 01/04/2021 17:40

I say 'Be Brave'
