We have decided on Euan.

I like more classic boys names (think Tom, Ben) and DH likes more popular ones (think Alfie, Riley). We also have Scottish roots but are living in England so the criteria was:

-Something we both like
-Something not too popular but not too 'boring' (as DH would call my choices)
-Something short to go with our long complex surname

  • Ideally something Scottish but this one is not essential

I do like the name and I wonder if its just last minute hormonal pondering that is making me question it! So any opinions or other suggestions welcome.

I have a Ewan too. I adore the name.

sarah13xx · 30/03/2021 16:01

I like Euan! I’m a teacher and it’s not a name you hear very often but any Euan’s I’ve met have been lovely. I’m also looking for a Scottish boy’s name just now. My partner has ruled Euan out for us because he knows someone called it. We also liked Harris but it’s sooo popular here now. Rory is also lovely but again, becoming popular

Chilldonaldchill · 30/03/2021 16:39

I love it.

Really nice, and a perfect balance of your two tastes - Euan is more interesting than Tom/Ben and more classic and timeless than Alfie and Riley.

itssquidstella · 30/03/2021 19:32

I'll be honest and say that I don't like it, BUT it is perfectly inoffensive and certainly not going to raise anyone's eyebrows.

User0ne · 30/03/2021 19:33

I think this is something you and DH need to agree on.

There's no need to agree it before the birth (in fact you have 7 weeks after the birth to register it with a name and it can be changed for up to a year afterwards).

Me and DH took 2.5, 3.5 and 1 week to agree a name for our 3 DS's. You get a bit sick of people asking but surely it's important enough to want to get right.

BabloHoney · 30/03/2021 19:46

I have a Ewan, he’s 6. We get lots of lovely compliments about his name, think it’s a perfect balance of not too common and not too out there. His brother’s name is more common but is a lot more marmite 😆 so I’m biased but I’d say go for Euan, it’s a great name!

dropthedeadhorse · 30/03/2021 20:15

Thank you all. I’m a lot more settled on Euan now. To be honest we don’t have any other names at all that we can agree on that haven’t been taken by others close to us so he will be a Euan whether he looks like one or not!

I am not mad about it because it always makes me think of sheep.

I like Owen though. Or for Scottish names Alistair is lovely, and so are Angus, Rory and Fergus, or Sandy for Alexander. Kester criminally underused IMO, Gillies, Lorne Innes great too. Also Ronan, Reuben, Robert nn Robin or Robbie.

DramaAlpaca · 30/03/2021 23:39

I like Euan/Ewan very much.

ColonelPine · 30/03/2021 23:56

I love the name Euan. He is likely to have to spell it out quite a lot though - as you say you have a long and complex surname would he also need to spell that out too? Not necessarily a problem but that’s the only downside I can think of!

Thedogscollar · 31/03/2021 03:56

Lovely name OP, go for it.

dropthedeadhorse · 31/03/2021 11:19

Hopefully he would only have to say ‘Euan with a U’ rather than spell it out every time.

There are 3 syllables and 7 letters in my name and it includes a silent 'h'. I have to spell it out everytime but am used to it, never really bothers me. Most of us with difficult names know how to handle it! What annoys me is people shortening my name without asking me, don't think anyone could shorten Euan though!

ZebraKid71 · 01/04/2021 02:17

I love it, it was on my list and we only went with something else because my other children have long names that are shortened and we wanted another name with nickname options. Id go for this spelling too, its a great name.

LostInTheColonies · 01/04/2021 03:27

I love Euan. Was the top of the list for me, followed by Rory / Ruaridh / Ruaraidh / variation thereof. Such a great name Grin. I had DD instead, so couldn't use it.

YoniAndGuy · 02/04/2021 09:28

Sorry I really dislike the spelling, but Ewan is lovely - and easier to say I think, you kind of want to put a ‘eurgh’ sound in Euan which is not nice!

He will forever be correcting it from Ewan too.

Cindie943811A · 02/04/2021 21:33

To be different I think Euan looks better than Ewan and it seems to better denote the pronunciation. Iwan which looks very similar, is the Flemish for Ivan and is pronounced EE- van.

Foxhasbigsocks · 02/04/2021 21:45

Love it!

Shortiemyboo · 02/04/2021 21:46

I like it, also likr Campball

GertrudeTheGreat · 02/04/2021 21:59

Good name! I know what you mean about not being 100% sold on a name, but it being close enough when you try to consider both partners' tastes. Tbh, that is how I felt about both of our dc names! Now, I love their names and couldn't imagine anything else.

Vetyveriohohoh · 02/04/2021 22:00

As long as your surname isn’t Kerr I think it’s great

Harvey3 · 02/04/2021 22:08

I like it! Have only met two, so it's not too popular, but is easily spelt/ pronounced.
