When did people decide on their names?

I’m only 13 weeks and we don’t plan on finding out the sex, but we have a name for each which we are 99% sure we will use.

Was anyone the same and changed their mind last minute? I love both names I just hope I don’t over do them in my head Grin

Dc1 we had 3x girls names and 1x boys name. We decided when she arrived (used two of them as first and middle).

Dc2 we found out and therefore used the boys name we had chosen for dc1.

rooarsome · 31/03/2021 08:19

DD we decided around 20 weeks, told people and then felt we couldn't change our mind.
Both my sons we decided after they were born. DS1 we changed it after a day, DS2 I named him as soon as I saw him

Fifthtimelucky · 01/04/2021 10:01

We didn't decide until they were born, though we had a shortlist of girls' names to choose from.

It's just as well that we didn't have boys as we hadn't got as far as agreeing a long list, let alone a shortlist!

Very early with DD, I knew I wanted to call her Matilda as soon as I was pregnant and my gut said I was having a girl. We nicknamed her Tilly all through pregnancy but around 2 months old she became Tilda.

I’m due DS in July and it’s been harder.

Theelderscrolls · 02/04/2021 07:59

We were 99% certain by the 20 week scan with both. Kept a couple of back ups just incase we changed our minds after the birth, but we didn't. Love their names.

Dc1 and dc2 we had decided a name a few weeks after dh and I met, about 10 years before dc1 was born (assuming we had the right sex for the names)! Unfortunately, when it came to the time, we had to rethink, so dc1 has both those names with our first choice as a middle name and dc2's potential name as a first name. Dc2 we finally decided at about 6 months pregnant. Our name choice had either been the opposite sex would have been the same both times and was also decided very early on. Having had to have a slight change to dc1 name, both dh and I were overjoyed when one of our DC chose that name for their dc1.

With DD1 we had a list of names we liked and decided on her name the day after she was born.

DD2s name is one DH mentioned he liked when I was pregnant with her. When she was born the MW asked if we had a name, me and DH looked at each other and her and said yes! The name DH liked suited her perfectly.

Had no idea what sex my babies were until born.

justkeepswimming0 · 02/04/2021 09:17

Unpopular opinion but I don’t get how you can name a baby you haven’t seen yet! We spoke about names of course but only once we saw him did we know what his name would be. I’ve never understood how people buy stuff with names on before they are born! What if they don’t fit that name?

DemobHappy · 02/04/2021 09:19

Narrowed it down to two names when DC1 was born and we knew within minutes of him being born which one ‘suited’ him. We both agreed, so it was pretty straightforward (but took us the whole pregnancy to actually get to two naked we both liked!).

With DC2, we pretty much knew the name we both loved a few weeks before she was born, but again - was a long road to agreement!

DemobHappy · 02/04/2021 09:19

naked = names Blush

orangejuicer · 02/04/2021 09:20

A week after DS was born. We had a few options but they just didn't suit. His middle name was set for ages but first name took more time for us to agree on.

Liskee · 02/04/2021 09:20

Baby 1 when we decided to try to get pregnant (about 6 weeks before I conceived!).

Baby 2 about an hour before I had my waters broken and was put on a Syntocinon drip (about 10 hours before I held baby in my arms) Smile

vampirethriller · 02/04/2021 09:21

I had a name picked for months but changed my mind when she was born and took another 4 days to pick a new one!

tisonlymeagain · 02/04/2021 09:22

Baby 1 before first scan
Baby 2 after the birth in the delivery room
Baby 3 around 7 months pregnant

We never told anyone the names - No 1 and 2 I didn't know the sex anyway - but did announce the name as soon as they were born. I like babies to be named straightaway!

Woodlandbelle · 02/04/2021 09:23

We had our lists from early on. Our ds has a family name so we knew that from even at dating stage. It's a lovely name everyone comments on it. Next dc we were sure of a name but not 100 percent. It wasn't the sex we thought (didn't find out but just a guess) but I decided the night before both a girls and boys name.

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 02/04/2021 09:28

DS1 was named before I even met DH Grin. Happily he loved the name too not that I’d have cared if he didn’t tbh

DS2 a was bit trickier. I think I was about 22 weeks.

DS3 was named when I was 14 weeks.

I HAVE to have them named early. It really stresses me otherwise. My nephew was only named 5 minutes before he was registered. His parents had no idea what to call him. His name is lovely though.

I also don’t understand (and I think I’m in the minority here) how a name doesn’t “suit” a baby. Surely they just are who you name them? Unless you’re Elon Musk’s last baby Grin

GintyMcGinty · 02/04/2021 09:31

With my first his name was picked 10 years before I conceived.

With my se one we finally agreed about 2 hours before I got wheeled in for my section.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 02/04/2021 09:34

We had a full girl and boy name ready each time. I announced the name immediately after DH told me whether it was a boy or a girl. We hadn’t told anyone else the names before the babies arrived.

Mumoblue · 02/04/2021 09:37

Had a shortlist before I even got pregnant and then decided officially after finding out he was a boy. We sort of knew beforehand but wanted to hold off on officially naming him because the pregnancy was high risk.
Luckily it all turned out well and I’ve never had any doubts about the name we gave him. Smile

littleredberries · 02/04/2021 09:38

At the time of our daughter's birth we had two names. One was a clear favourite but we wanted to make sure it fit her after meeting her.
Fortunately it did 😊

Dulcinae · 02/04/2021 17:43

DS1 has my all-time favourite name - I said when I was at school that I would have a boy with that name and fifteen years later I did.

With DD neither DH nor I can remember choosing her name. It was more a case of realising that that was her name than choosing. Her name wasn't even in our top ten when we were expecting DS. (Our favourite girl's name when we were expecting DS sounds similar to DS' name, so it wasn't an option for DD.)

DS2 - we had a name chosen quite early on, but DS1 liked another name and the other name grew on us, so we swopped at about 30 weeks.

Personally I can't understand when people say their newborn looks like or doesn't look like a particular name. Good job we're not all the same.
