Constantine

Constantine is becoming a favourite boys name of mine. I like it in full, but nn preference would be Stan.

Thoughts?

I love it but it’s a big name to live up to.

Ellmau · 28/03/2021 12:03

Nice name, but I wouldn't get that nickname from it because the emphasis is different in the full name.

SummaLuvin · 28/03/2021 12:04

So is Grace and that has been popular for decades!!!

(fair point though)

I know a few Konstantins and Constantine, both get nicknames Konti/Conti.

I like the name.

partyatthepalace · 28/03/2021 14:24

Yep nice

If you use Stan as a nn there’s a fair chance it will stick, otherwise I’ll be con but that’s OK

Violetlavenders · 28/03/2021 15:42

Stanley if you want Stan?

EssentialHummus · 28/03/2021 15:45

The Russian diminutive is Kostya, which isn't brilliant imo. I dunno. Not mad about it.

PandaFluff · 28/03/2021 15:50

Stan isn't a natural shortening of it for me. More likely to get Connie/Con

SummaLuvin · 28/03/2021 16:03

Kit isn’t a natural shortening for Christopher.
Harry isn’t a natural shortening for Henry.
Jim isn’t a natural shortening for James.

And yet they are common and still work.

I think if from baby/toddler a certain NN is used then it is likely to stick. If no NN is used then at school the more obvious choices will come up. Don’t hate Con/Connie but not wild about them which is why I would use Stan.

I feel I haven’t worded my OP the best. I want to get an idea of opinions on Constantine and Stan as names for a baby in 2021, rather than how people feel about use of Stan as a NN for Constantine.

Constantine has the emphasis on the first syllable, hence Con, Connie or Conty being natural shortenings. Yes, I like Constantine as a name - I find it classy, elegant and not overused.

I don't like Stanley or Stan at all.

Stevearnottsbeard · 28/03/2021 17:36

I thought it was a girls name🙈🙈🙈

GwendolineWindowlene · 28/03/2021 17:37

I like Constantine, and I like Stan, but if you introduced me to baby Constantine, NN Stan I’d think it was pretty contrived.

PandaFluff · 28/03/2021 17:38

Ah ok. I like Stan. I don't like Constantine.

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2021 17:51

Konstantin is a lot better. The -ine ending looks feminine, even though it's a man's name.

BrilliantBetty · 28/03/2021 17:56

Not a fan.

Ijustlikedthename · 28/03/2021 18:01

Love it!

Conditionconditioncondition · 28/03/2021 18:11

Killing Eve

Bringallthebiscuits · 28/03/2021 19:03

I think Stanley/Stan would be easier for him at school. He might get teased as Constantine (depending on where you live?!).

SummaLuvin · 28/03/2021 19:13

@Bringallthebiscuits Stanley is a hard no. It's a very unappealing name to me. Curious to hear why you think Constantine might be cause for teasing? Is it just because it's a bit long, and unusual? Or is there something that sounds crude that I have missed?

Gorgeous name but maybe quite exotic/brave if you have a typically British sounding surname imo. I slightly prefer the Constantin/Konstantin version too, as I feel an -ine ending sounds a bit more feminine in English. Stan is okay, just a bit blah compared to the lovely Constantine/Constantin.

tigertubbie · 28/03/2021 19:21

I know several Konstantins, nicknamed Kosta and Tino

MotherOfCrocodiles · 28/03/2021 19:22

I really like both Constantine and Stan. You need to commit to the nickname though. DS has a similarly "foreign" and long first name and we didn't give him a nn because DH refused, even though I really wanted to and felt that his full name was too much for a baby and people would rename him. DH seemed to think we could just instruct people to use his full name. Now nursery have given him a nn of their choosing which has stuck. Am still annoyed with DH about this.

TreesoftheField · 28/03/2021 19:24

As long as you Don't live in Cornwall. The village is pronounced Consontyne which isn't very pretty!

imalmostthere · 28/03/2021 19:24

I honestly think it's awful. Firstly I thought it was a girls name, and secondly it sounds like one of those awful pretentious names that no one would actually use In real life. If you like Stan, call him Stan. I don't understand the idea of calling a child a name based on a nickname you like at all.

RaininSummer · 28/03/2021 19:26

I like the full name but really don't like Stan. Might be my age but Stan is an old man. Do like the nickname Conti though.
