Thoughts on Rhiannon?

Thinking more as a middle name (for May). Like its links to Welsh mythology and the awesome Fleetwood Mac song, but worried it maybe sounds a bit dated?

I don’t think it sounds dated at all! To me it sounds like a strong but still feminine name. I’ve known a couple of Rhiannon’s and they’ve all been lovely. Be warned though, it will get shortened to Rhian which drove all the Rhiannon’s I knew bananas! 😂

TomHardyAndMe · 27/03/2021 19:55

More likely to be shortened to Rhi......

WeeGobshiteBentBastard · 27/03/2021 19:56

I love it 😀

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/03/2021 19:59

I think it possibly is very slightly dated in Wales (as the youngest one I've met has been in their late teens), but it's a gorgeous name anyway - I love the mythology and the FM song too!

Vodkabulary · 27/03/2021 20:04

My parents wanted to call me Rhiannon (Welsh dad and Fleetwood Mac fans) and I was gutted my whole childhood and teen years that my grandmother interfered.
I’m at peace with it now but secretly wish they’d stuck to their guns!

NannyR · 27/03/2021 20:11

I really love it, it's one of my favourite names (love Fleetwood Mac too!). The only problem I would have with actually using it is that I would pronounce it rhi-ANN-un (with a schwa sound in the last syllable), whereas, I believe the correct Welsh pronunciation is different, with more emphasis on the NON syllable.

HelloDulling · 27/03/2021 20:13

I love it, not dated at all. The two I know are never shortened to Rhian. Sometimes to Rhi.

sunshineandhappy · 27/03/2021 20:26

My daughter is in her twenties, and is Rhiannon, Welsh dad but living in England. I agree that the English pronunciation doesn't emphasise the 'non' syllable like the Welsh pronunciation but very rarely gets shortened ( none of us would dare!).

partyatthepalace · 27/03/2021 20:58

Yep, great name.

wingsnthat · 27/03/2021 21:03

I’m in my 20s, live in England and don’t know anyone with this name. I think it’s a bit dated to be honest - there’s so many nicer names!

I don’t think it flows well if it’s a middle name for May

DramaAlpaca · 27/03/2021 21:06

Oh it's lovely, do it.

Cherry321 · 27/03/2021 21:26

It’s lovely

snowone · 27/03/2021 21:39

I like it. I work with a Rhiannon, she is about 25 I think 🤔

Luckyelephant1 · 28/03/2021 08:55

I love it, especially how it's pronounced with a Welsh accent.

I'd go Rhiannon May though. May Rhiannon doesn't have the same ring to it.

Cakeandslippers · 28/03/2021 09:15

I like it. I have a May Elizabeth, I think it has a similar ring to it!

Heh1991 · 30/03/2021 03:17

Loved it because immediately thought of Fleetwood Mac but actually when I think about it I do think it’s quite dated!

PandaFluff · 30/03/2021 09:10

I like it but prefer with the names switched round.

DacwMamYnDwad · 30/03/2021 09:28

Rhiannon is lovely in a welsh accent, not very nice otherwise. (It's not Ree Annun, its RHee ANN on)
Gets shortened to Rhi, not Rhian.

I much prefer it to May.

Fleetwood Mac also said Sara as Sarah.

Chimchar · 30/03/2021 09:28

I'd go Rhiannon as first name with the nick name of Non or Nonnie. Daffodil

DacwMamYnDwad · 30/03/2021 09:30

Non is lovely, but Rhian has been ruined for me by the Ree-Anne/Ree-un way that some say it.

Rhiannon is a bit grannyish, popular in Wales in the 1940s.

Tillygetsit · 30/03/2021 22:45

My friend has a teenaged Rhiannon known as Annie. It's a beautiful name. Goes really well with May.

89redballoons · 31/03/2021 00:58

I know a few in their 30s. The more English Rhiannon I know gets her name shortened to Rhi, but the two who live in Wales and speak Welsh go by Non.

I absolutely love the Fleetwood Mac song, but Stevie Nicks does pronounce the name "wrong" - she almost says riy-ANN-en when the Welsh pronunciation is more like riy-AN-non. She first came across the name in a book, so wouldn't have heard the Welsh word I guess.

DacwMamYnDwad · 31/03/2021 12:44

@89redballoons,
Neither of those are right.

RH isn't an R followed by an H, it's a letter in it's own right. There's no R in Rhiannon.

The Rhiannons I know are Welsh mother tongue and say it as (RH)YANnon (2 syllables) or RhiANNon.

Annie as a nn is a bit contrived as Rhiannon is Rhian+Non

LaBellina · 31/03/2021 12:47

Love the name and it’s actually my favorite Fleetwood Mac song (after Everywhere and Gypsy). The younger generation might get confused though that maybe you named your child after Rihanna (which isn’t a bad thing of course). I’d say go for it. ‘Mythology names’ are never dated or old fashioned, they are simply classic and timeless.

CauliflowerCheese30 · 31/03/2021 12:51

We have a Rhiannon, my husband sometimes calls her Rhi Rhi, love the name and not many about.
