Is it Vi-ola or Vee-ola? I much prefer the first...

I would say VIE-o-la for the name, and vee-O-la for the instrument

sanityisamyth · 25/03/2021 14:41

I've taught children with both pronunciations so either is acceptable. I don't know which I'd prefer.

Yep, that's also what I was thinking

My instinct was to say Vee-oh-la. But then I remembered that's the instrument and the name is Vie-oh-la.

Definitely going to get both variants throughout her life similar to all the Maya's.

LivLavender · 25/03/2021 15:01

VEE-oh-la

PinkPurpleParade · 25/03/2021 15:01

Vi-ola - I don't know any but that's what I've heard people say local to me. I prefer that to vee-ola.

FelicityPike · 25/03/2021 15:02

Vie-oh-lah

Beautiful name.

LivLavender · 25/03/2021 15:24

@LivLavender

VEE-oh-la
other replies confused me, I actually say vee-OH-la.

Agree
Violetlavenders · 25/03/2021 15:35

Viola is pronounced Vee ola

Like Violetta

TokyoSushi · 25/03/2021 15:39

Vye (like eye) oh la

RickiTarr · 25/03/2021 15:40

VY-oh-la

IllNeverLetGoJack · 25/03/2021 15:44

Like the instrument; VY-o-la

OysterMonkey · 25/03/2021 15:45

V-eye-ola rather than V-ee-ola

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 25/03/2021 15:46

VY-uh-luh (almost like Violet without the T) for the girls’ name and Shakespearean Character.

The musical instrument is Vee-OH-luh.

Geamhradh · 25/03/2021 15:53

Depends where you are. Where I am both name and instrument are Veeola

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 15:59

Vi-OH-la.
Vee-oh-la is the instrument.

Violetlavenders · 25/03/2021 16:07

I've only ever heard the instrument as Vee o la.

Violetlavenders · 25/03/2021 16:11

Maybe it depends where you are, but in most languages Viola is pronounced Vee OH la. With the emphasis on the second syllable.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 25/03/2021 16:14

@Violetlavenders

I've only ever heard the instrument as Vee o la.
That’s phonetically the correct way to say it. It’s incorrect to call the instrument a Vy-oh-la. It’s derived from the Italian and is supposed to be universally pronounced “vee-oh-la” regardless of local dialect.
MadisonAvenue · 25/03/2021 16:15

Vi-ola

Violetlavenders · 25/03/2021 16:18

Yes, that makes sense.

Not in English.

The name is Vye oh la
The instrument is Vee oh la.

CaffiSaliMali · 25/03/2021 16:46

When we did Twelfth Night at school we were told the name was pronounced like Vye-la whereas the instrument is Vye-oh-la.

So I would say Vye-la I had to cross it off my list as DH keeps wanting to say 'vye-oh-la'!

TatianaBis · 25/03/2021 16:57

Whoever told you that was wrong.
